Tata Harrier EV Summon Mode Mishap Reported in Tamil Nadu, One Dead

Tata Harrier EV Summon Mode MishapA tragic incident has been reported from Avinashi, Tamil Nadu, where a brand-new Tata Harrier EV allegedly malfunctioned while operating in “summon mode,” resulting in the death of a user’s relative.
According to a post shared by a Reddit user earlier today, the victim sustained a severe head injury during the mishap and later succumbed. The incident, captured on video, shows the SUV in motion under summon mode — a feature that allows the vehicle to move autonomously at low speeds without direct driver input.

Fatal Accident Reported Involving Tata Harrier EV Summon Mode in Tamil Nadu pic.twitter.com/ETgWyoz8GF
    — RushLane (@rushlane) August 20, 2025

According to a Reddit post, the incident occurred when the vehicle’s summon mode was either activated accidentally or malfunctioned. The car reportedly began moving while the driver’s side door was open. In an attempt to stop the moving SUV, the man tried to apply the brakes, but slipped and fell, sustaining a head injury. He was declared brain dead by doctors shortly after.
The CCTV time and date stamp is 14th August 2025, evening around 5:53 PM. The circumstances that led to the accident remain unclear, and it is not yet verified whether the malfunction was due to a technical fault, user error, or external factors.

Family members are still in shock and have not initiated legal proceedings against Tata Motors. The Redditor further claimed that the deceased had already faced a software-related issue with the Harrier EV prior to the accident. On one occasion, the car reportedly shut down on the road and failed to restart until technicians from the dealership intervened. Authorities in Avinashi are yet to confirm details about the case or whether an investigation has been initiated.
Tata Motors has reached out to clarify that the Harrier EV involved in the reported incident remains with the family, and not with the company. Below is the official statement from the company.
Update 21st Aug – Tata Motors Statement
“We were informed of the tragic accident and are deeply saddened by the loss. Our thoughts, prayers, and heartfelt support are with the deceased’s family. We are currently gathering all relevant facts. Preliminary observations from video shared online/ on social media suggests that the vehicle may have rolled back from the top of a slope due to gravity and ricocheted after striking an unknown object, suggesting that the motor was not engaged. The vehicle remains with the family and has been driven since the incident, and we have not yet had the opportunity to inspect it.”
The Harrier EV, which was launched a few weeks ago, is among the company’s most advanced electric SUVs, equipped with modern driver-assist and convenience features, including summon functionality. The reported death has sparked concern and debate online about the safety of semi-autonomous features in vehicles operating in Indian conditions. Road safety experts stress that while advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and summon functions are designed for convenience, they must always be used with caution, and users should remain vigilant.

E20 Petrol Debate: Ethanol Blending Is the Future – But Forcing Consumers Isn’t

E20 Petrol DebateIndia’s transition to ethanol-blended fuel is being pitched as a landmark step toward energy security, farmer welfare, and reduced emissions. On paper, it makes sense. Ethanol is renewable, lowers carbon emissions, and reduces India’s dependence on costly crude imports. The government’s own data shows that blending has already saved over Rs 1.40 lakh crore in foreign exchange and supported the rural economy. Yet, the rollout of E20 petrol has triggered widespread public backlash – not because people oppose ethanol, but because they oppose being left without choice.
    Consumers Want Options, Not Compulsion
The core of the public’s frustration is simple: why should E20 be the only option? If E0 (pure petrol), E10 and E15 are available globally, why not in India? For many owners of older cars and two-wheelers, E20 brings genuine concerns of reduced fuel efficiency, compatibility issues, and potential engine damage. Automakers themselves have said that full E20 compliance was achieved only from April 2023 onward. That leaves millions of vehicles on Indian roads potentially vulnerable.
    E20 Petrol Debate – Source
While the Ministry insists that studies by ARAI, SIAM, and Indian Oil show “no significant wear-and-tear,” real-world consumer experiences often diverge from lab results. The ministry admits a 1–2% mileage drop in newer E10-calibrated cars and 3–6% in older ones, but community fact-checks point to ethanol’s lower calorific value, which results in about 7% energy loss per litre. Consumers are understandably wary of being told this is “marginal.”
    The Price Promise That Wasn’t
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari had famously said that ethanol-based petrol would be cheaper: “Diesel at Rs 50/litre and petrol alternative at Rs 55/litre.” Today, E20 is sold at the same price as regular petrol, despite its lower energy content. This means consumers are paying the same, but getting fewer kilometers per litre – effectively a hidden cost increase. If the government truly wants to build trust, fulfilling the earlier promise of lower pump prices for E20 is critical.
    E20 Petrol Debate – Source
    Passing the Burden to Consumers
New report claims that some automakers are now working on E20 upgrade kits for older vehicles, priced between Rs 4,000– Rs 6,000. While this is a constructive step, many consumers ask why they should bear additional costs for a government-mandated fuel shift. After all, they already paid for vehicles designed for E0 or E10 and continue to pay rising fuel prices. Forcing them to retrofit their vehicles to avoid damage feels like shifting the burden entirely to the consumer.
Ethanol Blending is the Future – But Must Be Fair
It is important to note that the public is not against ethanol. Most agree that supporting farmers, reducing emissions, and saving forex are worthy goals. The backlash is not against E20 itself – it is against the lack of choice and the broken promise of affordability.
Give consumer options – Image Team BHP
If India truly wants to lead in green mobility, the way forward must be flexibility and transparency:
    – Offer E0, E10, and E20 at fuel pumps so consumers can choose what suits their vehicle.– Price E20 lower to reflect its lower energy content and earlier ministerial promises.– Support retrofit kits through subsidies or incentives instead of passing the full cost to owners.– Communicate transparently, acknowledging real-world efficiency drops instead of downplaying them.
Ethanol blending is a bold step for India’s future, but forcing consumers without choice risks alienating the very people this policy is meant to serve. A fair, flexible, and consumer-first approach will not only ease the transition but also ensure that India’s ethanol story is one of trust, not resentment. More

Tata.ev Charging Report 2025 – Key Insights Revealed For EV Users

Harrier EV Receives Record 10,000 BookingsA significant improvement has been noted in EV charging infrastructure across the country, although some snags still need ironing out
To provide an overview of EV usage trends and the prevailing EV charging infrastructure in the country, Tata.ev has published its India Charging Report 2025. The comprehensive report provides data-backed insights that will benefit the entire EV ecosystem and all stakeholders. Let’s take a look at the key findings of the report.
    EV adoption and usage patterns
Tata’s report reveals that electric vehicles are now present across 65% of the pin codes in the country. 84% of users utilize their EV as their primary vehicle. This is an improvement from the 74% reported in 2023. Another interesting revelation is that EVs are being used more by their owners, as compared to usage by ICE car owners. This could be due to the lower running cost of EVs.
    Tata.ev Charging Report 2025
    Tata.ev Charging Report 2025
Average running of EVs is 1,600 km per month, which is 40% more than average distance of ICE vehicles. In 2023, EVs were ahead by 11%. EVs are also being used more frequently, an average of 27 days per month. That’s 35% more, as compared to ICE vehicles. This again is due to the lower running cost of EVs. Other factors also come into play such as ease of driving and seamless availability of charging stations.
One can also see in the report that EVs are being used across more than 95% of the road network in the country. This is a positive development in terms of EV penetration, consumer confidence in their vehicles and easy availability of charging stations across the country.
    Tata.ev Charging Report 2025
    Tata.ev Charging Report 2025
As per the report, 50% of Tata EV owners have successfully covered 500 km and more on their vehicles across important corridors. It includes routes such as Delhi-Manali, Mumbai-Goa and Hyderabad-Bengaluru. This data highlights that EV charging stations are easily available across leading highways. Also dispels the myth that EVs are only for urban commuting. Long distance travelling on EVs is a major trend and many users regularly share their experiences.
    Tata.ev Charging Report 2025
    Tata.ev Charging Report 2025
Public charging network availability and usage
A massive 4X growth has been noted in the number of public chargers. From 5,500 public chargers in 2023, the number has now reached 24,000. These are spread across both highways and urban centres. Tata utilizes a proprietary spatial analysis methodology based on hexbin mapping to accurately assess fast charger availability across metro areas. The methodology utilizes processes such as route data mapping (GPS based tracking of EV and ICE journeys) and charger proximity analysis.
Based on the analysis, it has been found that 91% of national highways now have charging options within a radius of 50 km. This is an improvement over the 60% availability noted in 2023. States with 100% charger availability (within 50 km) include Karnataka, Haryana, Delhi, Kerala, Bihar, Chandigarh, Punjab, Goa, Tripura, Sikkim, Puducherry, Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli.
    Tata.ev Charging Report 2025
    Tata.ev Charging Report 2025
Another interesting thing revealed is that around 25% of the charging stations are reaching utilization levels above profitability thresholds. This is a positive development for people and entities who may be looking to set up EV charging stations as a business. User trust in public charging stations is also growing.
Tata report mentions that 35% of its EV users charge their vehicle at a public charging station, at least once a month. This is an improvement from the 21% noted in 2023. Nearly 77% of Tata EV owners have gone on trips where they needed to use public charging stations. In fact, close to 14,000 of them depend on public charging as their primary source.
    Tata.ev Charging Report 2025
    Tata.ev Charging Report 2025
    Key challenges
While EV charging infrastructure is rapidly improving, a number of challenges remain. For example, non-functioning chargers are a major pain point. As of Feb 2024, around 12,100 of the approximately 25,000 public chargers were found to be non-functional.
Another hassle is the difficulty in finding a working charging station. Users are reportedly using 17 – 20 apps just to locate a functional charging station. Digital payments are also sometimes a challenge, especially for elderly users or owners of chauffeur-driven vehicles.
    Tata.ev Charging Report 2025
Tata.ev innovative solutions for EV users
For the convenience of EV users, Tata.ev is expanding its network of verified charging stations. These state-of-the-art charging points lead the way in terms of accessibility, compatibility and operational reliability. Before being included in Tata’s network, the charging stations are thoroughly vetted for their operability and compatibility. Consistent positive customer feedback is also a prerequisite.
Since the launch of the verified network, a 37% jump has been noted in the utilization of these chargers. Tata.ev has also been helping EV users with DrivePay in-car solution, tap and pay with unified RFID card, iRA.ev app and UPI integration. A dedicated charging call centre has been set up to quickly resolve user issues.
    Tata.ev Charging Report 2025
Tata is also building its Mega Charger network, which will be available at strategic locations. These will focus on speed and reliability. Tata’s Mega Charger network will have 120 kW charging speeds and 95% uptime. These charging stations will provide priority access to Tata EV users and 25% lower tariff.
Thirty such charging stations are already active in partnership with ChargeZone, Statiq and Zeon. These can be located via the iRA.ev app. Tata has plans to increase the mega chargers to 500 by 2027. These will be available across both highways and urban areas. More

Mahindra BE 6, XEV 9e Launched in Nepal – Priced NPR 57 Lakh, NPR 69 Lakh, Resp.

Mahindra BE 6 Launched in NepalMost of Mahindra cars sold in India are available in Nepal as well including bestsellers like Scorpio N, XUV700, XUV3XO, XUV400, Bolero and Scorpio/Bolero Pickups
Expanding its EV portfolio in Nepal, Mahindra has introduced the BE 6 and XEV 9e electric SUVs. The launch took place during the ongoing NAIMA Nepal Mobility Expo 2025. Bookings for BE 6 and XEV 9e are now open in the Himalayan Kingdom. Let’s check out the details.
Mahindra BE 6, XEV 9e – Variants on offer
BE 6 in Nepal is available in three variants – Pack One Above, Pack Two and Pack Three Select. On the other hand, the XEV 9e is available in Pack Two, Pack Three Select and Pack Three variants. Prices start at NPR 57 lakh for BE 6 and NPR 69 lakh for XEV 9e. That’s Rs 35.66 lakh and Rs 43.17 lakh, respectively.
Mahindra XEV 9e Launched in Nepal
In India, Mahindra BE 6 is available at a starting price of Rs 18.90 lakh (no charger option). Cost with the 7.2 kW and the 11.2 kW charger is Rs 19.40 lakh and Rs 19.65 lakh, respectively. Similarly, the XEV 9e is available at a starting price of Rs 21.90 lakh (no charger). Base variant price with the 7.2 kW charger is Rs 22.40 lakh. Customers choosing the 11.2 kW charger have to pay Rs 22.65 lakh.
Prices are on the higher side in Nepal, as the country imposes significant import duty. For ICE cars, Nepal has import duty in the range of 60% to 240%, depending on the engine capacity. Import duty is relatively less for EVs and it is based on the power output.
Lower output electric motors for Nepal
In a move that is likely aimed at reducing import duties, Mahindra is offering the BE 6 and XEV 9e in Nepal with lower output motors. Most variants are powered by a 99-kW electric motor. The XEV 9e Pack Three variant offers the best performance, equipped with a 199-kW electric motor. In comparison, Mahindra BE 6 and XEV 9e in India have power output of 170 kW or 210 kW, based on the variant.
Mahindra sends its vehicles to Nepal as CBUs, since there is no local manufacturing or assembly unit. Sales and service are done by Agni Mahindra, the official distributor of Mahindra vehicles in Nepal. It is the sole distributor of Mahindra vehicles in Nepal and has been active for the last three decades.
Since the battery pack capacity is the same as in India, the range is not impacted. BE 6 in Nepal is being offered with the 59-kWh battery pack, offering a range of 557 km (MIDC P1+P2). The XEV 9e in Nepal is being offered with the 79-kWh battery pack, offering a range of 656 km. In India, both SUVs have the 59-kWh and the 79-kWh battery pack options, based on the variant. Mahindra BE 6 and XEV 9e utilize LFP battery packs, which are known for their safety, reliability and long life.
    Equipment list
Both SUVs offer a comprehensive range of premium features. Some of the key highlights include a race-inspired digital cockpit (BE 6), cinematic triple-screen display (XEV 9e), Sonic Studio by Harman Kardon and VisionX augmented-reality heads-up display. Users can access preset themes of Calm, Cozy and Club via the LiveYourMood function. Safety kit is pretty robust with ADAS Level 2 for BE 6 and ADAS Level 2+ for XEV 9e. Other highlights include a driver monitoring system and a 360° view camera setup. More
