    Harley Davidson 2021 Sportster SThe 1250cc V-Twin motor in Sportster S has been tuned to produce more torque and offer more low-end and mid-range grunt
    The Sportster brand has been an iconic range of cruisers under Harley Davidson’s portfolio which has been in continuous production since 1957. Harley Davidson unveiled its latest sport custom motorcycle named Sportster S earlier this year.
    Now it is getting ready for India launch. Today, Harley Davidson India revealed that the motorcycle will be launched at the 2021 India Bike Week, which is scheduled to take place near Lonavala in Maharashtra on 4-5 Dec 2021.
    Harley Davidson 2021 Sportster S – Custom-like Design
    The final production model of Sportster S made its first appearance as a Custom concept almost four years back and still stays very much similar. The silhouette of production-spec Sportster S is retained with beefy twin-can exhausts, chunky tyres and a single-piece seat.
    The bike gets a large skid plate underneath and a nice flat line from tank to seat whereas the massive front tyre and a short fender lends it a classic bobber look. Upfront, Sportster S flaunts a capsule-shaped headlight which looks a little quirky. Other styling highlights such as the flat tail section, with a cowl, single-piece saddle and upswept golden-coloured exhaust mufflers draw inspiration from Harley Davidson XR750 flat tracker.

    The powertrain is highlighted by the use of a Chocolate Satin finish on the magnesium engine covers. The cruiser will be offered in three colour options namely Stone Washed White Pearl, Midnight Crimson and Vivid Black. Overall, the cruiser has been crafted in a manner to make it look like a custom-built bike.
    Hardware Configurations
    Harley Davidson has also updated the chassis of the new Sportster S where the engine now acts as the stress member. This is done to reduce the weight of the bike. Further, the use of lightweight materials has helped achieve an optimum power-to-weight ratio. The company also claims that a stiffer chassis has improved the handling of the motorcycle. The tubular steel frame is suspended on Showa 43mm inverted forks at front and a SHOWA Piggyback mono-shock at rear.
    While the front suspension unit is fully adjustable, the rear unit features hydraulic preload adjustment. The motorcycle rides on 17-inch front and 16-inch rear lightweight cast-aluminum wheels with a staggered, five-spoke design. Braking duties are handled by a 320mm disc chewed down by a four-piston, radial monoblock Brembo caliper at front and a 260mm disc held by a twin-piston Brembo caliper at rear.

    RE-Tuned V-Twin Motor
    The powertrain features a 1250cc Revolution Max 1250T engine at its mechanical heart. This unit is the American bikemaker’s latest iteration of a liquid-cooled 60-degree V-Twin engine which has been derived from Pan America 1250. However, in Sportster S, it makes 121 bhp and 125 Nm of torque which is 30 horses less than what is offered in its hardcore adventure bike sibling. The engine is married to a six-speed gearbox with a slipper clutch.
    While the output is on the lower side, Harley says the engine has been tuned to offer more grunt at low-end and mid-range. The engine also offers 10 percent more torque between 3,000 and 6,000 rpm. The 1,250cc unit also features other modern technologies such as VVT (Variable Valve Timing) and DOHC (Dual Overhead Camshafts).

    Speaking of technologies, Sportster S is laced with modern electronic amenities including a 4.0-inch-diameter TFT digital console with smartphone connectivity, a six-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU), cornering ABS, traction control, tyre pressure monitoring system, cruise control and many more. It also offers four riding modes- Road, Sport, Rain and Custom.
    Sportster S has been offered at a starting price of USD 14,999 (approx. INR 11.18 lakh). India launch price is expected to be in the range of Rs 15-20 lakh. More

    Two Wheeler Retail Sales Oct 2021 – Honda, Bajaj, RE, Hero Electric, Jawa, Ather

    Two wheeler retail sales through the month of October 2021 revealed that it was electric two wheeler that were more in demand over their petrol powered counterparts. The top 4 bike makers, Hero, Honda, TVS and Bajaj each experienced a YoY de-growth while Hero Electric, Okinawa and Ather along with PUR Energy posted significantly higher retail sales.

    Two wheeler retail sales stood at 9,96,024 units in the past month, down from 10,60,337 units sold in October 2020. This was a de-growth of 6.07 percent. However, when compared to sales of 14,23,668 units sold in October 2019, sales dipped as much as 30.04 percent.
    Hero MotoCorp lead the list with 3,08,287 units retailed in the past month. This was against 3,38,655 units retailed in October 2020 bringing down market share to 30.95 percent over 31.94 percent held earlier. Keen to enter the electric two wheeler arena, the company has trademarked ‘Vida’ name for EVs. Vida will be the sub-brand under which Hero MotoCorp will sell its electric two-wheelers. As a part of an agreement between Hero MotoCorp and Hero Electric, Hero MotoCorp cannot sell any EVs with Hero name.
    Honda retails also dipped significantly YoY to 2,74,951 units down from 2,99,555 units sold in October 2020 while market share dipped to 27.60 percent from 28.25 percent YoY. Honda Activa scooter was a major contributor to overall retail sales while the Dio, CB Shine, CB350, Unicorn and Grazia also added significant numbers.

    TVS Motors, Bajaj Auto
    Two other leading bikemakers to report de-growth were TVS Motors and Bajaj Auto. Sales of TVS dipped to 1,55,295 units from 1,57,680 units while Bajaj retails slipped to 1,15,339 units in October 2021 from 1,19,936 units retailed in October 2020. However, market share of TVS Motors increased to 15.59 percent in the past month over 14.87 percent held in October 2020. For Bajaj Auto, the recently launched Pulsar N250 and F250 could add some impetus to sales in the months ahead.
    Suzuki retail sales increased YoY to 47,826 units retailed in October 2021, up from 44,952 units retailed in the same month of the previous year. Market share also saw a boost to 4.80 percent. Suzuki has launched a new 125cc scooter called Avenis in India. Next they plan to launch an electric scooter based on Burgman.
    Yamaha and Royal Enfield also posted a YoY de-growth in terms of retail sales while retails of Hero Electric increased significantly to 6,366 units in October 2021 up from 314 units retailed in October 2020. Hero Electric is also set to install one lakh EV charging stations across India for which it has tied up with Bengaluru-based EV charging start-up Charzer. Charzer will set up 10,000 charging stations across 30 cities in the first year itself.

    Okinawa and Piaggio Post Higher YoY Retails
    Electric two wheeler maker Okinawa has posted higher retails at 4,082 units in October 2021, up from 548 units sold in October 2020. It was the company’s Praise Pro that commanded the most attention. Piaggio also posted higher YoY retails at 3,849 units in the past month, up from 3,731 units retailed in October 2020. Piaggio has just launched an updated version of the Aprilia SR scooter. Aprilia SR 125 and Aprilia SR 160 receive a completely new design and revised features. Aprilia SR 160 will be available at Rs 1.17 lakh, while Aprilia SR 125 is priced at Rs 1.07 lakh.
    Ather Energy retail sales also increased significantly to 2,648 units in October 2021 over 258 units sold in October 2020. Ather has also announced that from November 15, 2021 to May 15, 2022, Ather customers can avail Connect Pro and Connect Lite subscriptions free of cost. Retail sales of Classic Legends (Jawa) and PurEnergy also saw significant YoY growth as did Ampere Electric Vehicles. More

    Ntorq has most of these features excluding a few such as side stand engine cut-off. But Ntorq has some additional features such as voice assist commands. RayZR misses out on features such as navigation, engine kill switch, external fuel filler cap and LED tail light.

    In terms of power output, Ntorq leads the pack with 10.2 ps of max power at 7,000 rpm. It is India’s first 125cc scooter to have more than 10 hp power. Torque output is also highest at 10.8 Nm at 5,500 rpm. Avenis makes 8.7 ps at 6,750 rpm and 10 Nm at 5,500 rpm. RayZR has least power output at 8.2 ps, but torque is second best at 10.3 Nm. While Avenis and Ntorq have CVT gearbox, RayZR utilizes a V-Belt Automatic unit.

    RayZR low power should not be a concern, as it is the lightest of the three at 99kg. At the rear, Avenis has swingarm whereas Ntorq uses coil spring with hydraulic dampers. RayZR has unit swing rear suspension.     Yamaha RayZR is the most affordable, priced in the range of Rs 75,372 – 85,896. Next is TVS Ntorq available in the range of Rs 78,090 – 87,270.     New Royal Enfield Classic 350 Bobber Planned For Launch In 2022

    Royal Enfield currently leads in 350cc motorcycle segment with market share of more than 80%. To ensure consumers have more options to choose from, four new 350cc motorcycles will be launched by end of next year. In addition to domestic market, these bikes will also be sold globally. Some of these can actually register higher sales in overseas markets. This trend can already be seen with 650 twins that usually sell more units internationally.
    Royal Enfield new 350cc bikes details
    All four bikes will be using the new 350cc engine and new J platform. These upgrades were first introduced with Meteor 350 last year, followed by recently launched all-new Classic 350. These improvements have resulted in multiple benefits including smooth power delivery, reduced vibrations and better stability and control.
    The new 350cc motor generates 20.2 bhp of max power and 27 Nm of peak torque. It is mated to a 5-speed gearbox. Another key feature introduced with Meteor was Tripper navigation. It remains to be seen which among the four new bikes will be getting this.
    Excluding the 350cc bobber, all other bikes will have telescopic forks at front and twin gas charged rear shock absorbers. Braking system has disc brakes at both ends and dual-channel ABS will be offered as standard.
    Royal Enfield Hunter 350 – Render
    New Bullet 350 and Hunter 350
    Among the new bikes, one is likely to be Bullet 350. Codenamed J1B, it will be replacing existing Bullet 350 and the Bullet 350 ES. Bullet 350 is currently the third bestselling 350cc Royal Enfield bike, trailing behind Classic 350 and Meteor 350.
    Second new 350cc bike could be a Meteor-based roadster. Spied quite frequently in recent months, it is being referred to as Hunter 350. Internally, this bike has been codenamed J1C1. Hunter will have a sibling as well, which is codenamed J1C2. It will be the same as Hunter in terms of core hardware components. However, it will miss out on some of the premium features. The idea is to make the bike the most affordable 350cc motorcycle from Royal Enfield.
    Hunter and its sibling will have retro styling with features such as round headlamp, round rear-view mirrors and spoke-design alloy wheels. Other key features include fork gaiters, upswept exhaust, 17-inch wheels at both ends, split grab rails, short rear section, and round taillight. Test mules have been spotted with an all-black theme. At the time of launch, several more colour options are likely.
    2022 Classic 350 Bobber
    Fourth product will be a bobber-styled motorcycle based on new Classic 350. Although not much details are available right now, it could borrow some styling bits from Concept KX 838 that was showcased in 2019. Internally, the 350cc bobber is codenamed J1H. It could get features such as single seat, wide and tall handlebar, and spoke-styled alloy wheels.
    Royal Enfield is also working to expand its 400cc and 650cc range. Some of the upcoming bikes in these segments include a new cheaper Himalayan variant called Scram 411, a cruiser named Super Meteor 650 and a more powerful 650cc Himalayan.

    Yamaha has taken the covers off from the upcoming 2022 TMax for European markets. The flagship Maxi scooter has received multiple updates in its current iteration over the outgoing model. The scooter is expected to go on sale in many European markets including UK at the start of next year.
    TMax has been an immensely successful scooter in Europe since it was first launched in 2001 and has been the best-selling sports scooter in the past two decades. The 2022 model comes equipped with a range of new features as well as updated aesthetics that make it more appealing than before.

    In its latest avatar, TMax has been updated with a sportier and more aggressive styling inspired by supersport motorcycles. It gets restyled twin LED headlamps and a larger windscreen mounted on top of the front apron. The front apron also features a large air intake scoop which gives the face of the scooter a beak-like appearance. The panels are new with a more compact body on offer.
    The single-piece seat with a raised tail section features lumbar support for the rider for additional comfort during long journeys. The new TMax sits on a lighter aluminium chassis which should feel easier to manoeuver and handle around corners. A sporty riding posture has been attained with a slightly forward-leaning position by adjusting all points of the ‘rider triangle’.

    Yamaha is offering the Maxi scooter in two derivatives- TMax and TMax Tech Max. The former will be offered with three colour options namely Extreme Yellow, Icon Blue and Sword Grey. The latter, on the other hand, will be reserved for UK markets only and will be available in two shades- Dark Petrol and Power Grey. The yellow-coloured alloys and rims also add to the visual appeal of the scooter.

    In terms of features, 2022 TMax gets a new 7-inch full-colour TFT instrument console enabled with full smartphone connectivity and in-built navigation with Garmin maps connectivity via Bluetooth, Wifi and USB. All these could be controlled through a joystick-like setup on the left handlebar.
    Practical creature comforts on offer include heated handlebar grips, heated seats, cruise control, electrically adjustable windshield, and backlit handlebar switches. Other amenities such as traction control, keyless start with Smartkey remote, remote opening fuel cap and seat and multiple ride modes are also included in the package. However, most of these techs are available in the top-spec Tech Max trim.

    Powertrain, Hardware Specs
    Powertrain of TMax hasn’t been changed with the same 560cc two-cylinder DOHC engine propelling the latest iteration. This motor cranks out 47.6 bhp at 7,500rpm and 55.7 Nm of torque at 5,250rpm with power going to the rear wheel via an automatic transmission and belt drive. That said, there are some tweaks made to the scooter’s hardware configurations.
    Suspension setup comprises new 41mm USD forks upfront and a single rear shock which offers a better front-end feel and damping at the rear. Braking duties are handled by dual 262mm front discs and a 282mm rear disc which are complemented by a dual-channel ABS. More

    Suzuki India is getting ready to launch a new scooter today – It is called Avenis and is aimed at TVS Ntorq and Yamaha RayZR
    After teasing multiple times, the new Suzuki scooter has finally shown itself for the first time. It is called Suzuki Avenis. To be offered in sporty design, new-gen features and multiple colour options, it will take on TVS Ntorq and Yamaha RayZR.
    2021 Suzuki Avenis 125cc Scooter
    This new Suzuki Avenis scooter is a new offering in the 125cc segment. It is the third 125cc scooter to be offered by Suzuki in the country after Access and Burgman Street. It will be a more premium offering than Access 125, but could sit below Burgman Street in the lineup.
    The new 125cc scooter gets a much sportier design than Access. The sporty styling elements are said to be inspired by motorcycles. Upfront, the apron flaunts a centrally mounted trapezoidal LED headlight with an integrated DRL and features prominent crease lines.
    The turn indicators are placed on the handlebar cowl similar to the ones seen in SR 125 and SR 160 while a small windscreen is positioned above the cowl. The side panels feature an overdose of cuts and creases which lend the scooter an edgy styling.

    The sporty design is carried forward to the tail section with a split triangular LED tail-light. Suzuki is offering multiple attractive colour options in addition to dual-tone paint schemes which enhance the scooter’s aesthetics.     In terms of features, it gets an all-digital instrument console which is derived from the connected variants of Access and Burgman Street. This display is enabled with Bluetooth connectivity which offers features like call/messages alert and turn-by-turn navigation.
    Navigation and call features will be powered by Suzuki Ride Connect App, which is on offer with Android as well as Apple iOS. Other features on offer include LED headlights and taillights, a USB charger, an external fuel filler cap, integrated engine start and kill switch.

    If it is indeed a 125cc machine, the new 2021 Suzuki Avenis Scooter will be powered by a familiar 124cc single-cylinder motor that propels Access as well as Burgman Street.     Electric Scooter Sales Oct 2021 – Bajaj Chetak Vs TVS iQube

    Bajaj Chetak Electric ScooterWhile Chetak records its highest ever sales this year in October, iQube MoM sales have nearly halved
    Close fight between Bajaj Chetak and TVS iQube continues with the former taking lead in October. However, iQube is still ahead in terms of overall sales during Jan-Oct period. Chetak and iQube sales during this period are 3,832 units and 4,065 units, respectively. While both scooters have positive YoY growth, iQube MoM growth has turned negative in October.

    Chetak sales in October were at 835 units. YoY growth is 223.64%, as compared to 258 units sold in October last year. Chetak MoM growth is 30.06%, as compared to 642 units sold in September 2021.
    Increase in Chetak sales indicates that the company could be starting to recover from the global shortage of semiconductor chips and other imported components. Chetak sales have consistently improved in recent months, from 364 units in August to 642 in September. Its second best this year was in July when sales were at 730 units.
    iQube YoY growth is 1134%, up from 32 units in October last year to 395 units in October 2021. MoM growth is down by -48.43%, as compared to 766 units sold in September last year. iQube September sales were its highest this year. Barring some exceptions, iQube sales have consistently increased since January. Overall, the two scooters combined have registered YoY growth of 324.14%. MoM growth is down by -12.64%.
    Electric Scooter Sales Oct 2021 – Bajaj Chetak Vs TVS iQube
    Threat from rivals
    Bajaj and TVS were among the first established auto companies to launch their electric scooters. Chetak and iQube are already facing tough competition from the likes of Ola, Ather 450X and Simple One. Newer products to hit the market in recent times appear to be better equipped, as compared to Chetak and iQube. Their popularity is also on the rise, as was evident recently when Ola electric scooter clocked bookings worth Rs 1,100 crore.
    Competition in electric two-wheeler segment is expected to intensify even further when other mainstream auto companies launch their electric scooters / motorcycles. For example, Hero MotoCorp is pretty close to launching it first electric scooter.
    It could be named VIDA, as was recently revealed in registration documents. Later, the company could also launch electric motorcycles. Hero is developing its electric two-wheelers in collaboration with Taiwan-based EV manufacturer Gogoro.
    Electric Scooter Sales Oct 2021 – Bajaj Chetak Vs TVS iQube
    Another entrant will be Suzuki, which is expected to launch its first electric scooter soon. Instead of a new scooter, Suzuki has chosen to use its popular Burgman to build its electric scooter. Burgman electric scooter has been spied on road tests multiple times. It could be launched at a starting price of around Rs 1 lakh.
    Honda is also developing an electric scooter, especially for Indian market. It is expected to be launched sometime during 2022-2023. Although designed for India, Honda will be targeting export markets as well with its new electric scooter.
    Leading tech companies like Realme and OnePlus are also reported to be working on electric two-wheelers. Various other startups will also be entering this space in coming years, possibly with improved products. All of these will be a challenge for Chetak and iQube. More

    350cc Motorcycle Sales Oct 2021 – Classic, Meteor, CB 350, Bullet

    New Royal Enfield Classic 350Honda H’ness CB 350 is top gainer in October, posting its highest ever monthly sales at 7,152 units
    Despite the festive season, 350cc motorcycle sales reported negative YoY growth of -29.67% in October. Sales are down from 60,851 units in October last year to 42,799 units in October 2021. All except Meteor 350 and CB 350 have negative growth in October. However, MoM numbers have improved, registering growth of 66.47% in October. Sales in September 2021 were at 25,709 units. All motorcycles have positive MoM growth.
    In exports, the segment has gained 252.35% YoY. As compared to 936 units in October last year, exports increased to 3,298 units in October 2021. MoM export numbers, however, are negative at -4.13%. Exports in September 2021 were at 3,440 units. Except CB 350, all other motorcycles have negative MoM export growth.

    Even though Classic 350 continues to be segment leader, it has lost more than half of its sales. A total of 19,728 units were sold in October 2021, as compared to 41,953 units in October last year. Classic 350 market share is also down to 46.09%. However, MoM sales have improved by 43.47% in comparison to 13,751 units sold in September 2021.
    Royal Enfield had recently launched all-new Classic 350 in the price range of Rs 1.84 lakh and Rs 2.15 lakh. The bike has received several upgrades including new engine and platform, revised semi-digital instrument cluster and Tripper navigation.

    Meteor 350 is second with sales of 7,851 units in October 2021. Market share is at 18.34%. MoM growth is at 26.96%, as compared to 6,184 units sold in September 2021. Royal Enfield will soon expand the Meteor range to include a new 650cc cruiser bike named Super Meteor. It is scheduled for debut later this month at 2021 EICMA.
    CB 350 climbs to third spot, registering more than 5-fold YoY growth. From 1,290 units in October last year, sales have zoomed to 7,152 units in October 2021. The bike now commands 16.71% market share. MoM growth has more than doubled, as compared to 2,995 units sold in September 2021.
