      Royal Enfield Classic 350 has been customised into a bobber by Jaipur-based Rajputana Custom MotorcyclesRoyal Enfield Classic 350 Bobber KitThe number of Royal Enfield bikes that go under the knife at a custom workshop must be overwhelming. The brand is synonymous with aftermarket custom modifications and we have witnessed countless examples of custom-built Royal Enfield bikes over the years.The latest example involves a previous-gen model of Classic 350 in its Signals Edition form that has been modified into a bobber. The motorcycle has been custom-built by a Jaipur-based workshop named Rajputana Custom Motorcycles. The bike has undergone several cosmetic and mechanical updates over its donor model. Rajputana Customs has launched bobber kits for both Classic 350 and Classic 500.Royal Enfield Classic 350 Bobber KitsUpfront, the motorcycle gets an aftermarket round headlight with a black grille cover and bezels. Upper section of the front forks also comprises fatter casings. In addition, the front fender has been removed completely which bares the front tyre to its fullest. More importantly, it gets a new custom handlebar with new bar-end weights that is pulled towards the rider.As seen in contemporary bobbers, the pillion seat has been completely removed while the rider’s saddle gets a custom seat which goes well with the overall appeal of the bike. The stock fuel tank has been kept intact and features a 3D Royal Enfield logo and a Signals serial number. Side boxes have been customised as well by addition of ribbed paddings thus amplifying the bike’s rugged appearance.Royal Enfield Classic 350 Bobber KitInternals including the engine gearbox assembly, exhaust, engine sump guard, etc. are painted black as seen in the stock model. For exhaust, Rajputana has utilised a custom-built straight-pipe unit which sports an insulated wrap and golden-finished exhaust tip. Further, the bike rolls on blacked-out wire-spoke wheels that are shod with balloon-type tyres.We also get to see custom plates mounted on the engine cover and crank cover, Rajputana has added custom footpegs that are forward-biased along with a custom kick starter. Noticeably, the airbox has been removed which has left the air filter completely exposed. Front brake and clutch levers are custom-built and feature beautiful artistic patterns.Mechanical Updates & Engine SpecsIn terms of mechanical updates, rear shock absorbers used are aftermarket units with new custom-built mounts. It also gets a new aftermarket shorter rear fender that has been mounted on the swingarm. Braking setup remains identical to the stock model with single disc brakes at both ends.No changes have been mentioned for the powertrain department. Since this is a previous-gen Classic 350, the motorcycle is powered by a 346cc single-cylinder, air-cooled motor which in its BS6 form pushed out 19.2 bhp and 28 Nm of peak torque.       Electric Scooter Sales May 2022 – Okinawa No 1, Ola No 2, Ampere, Ather, Hero Electric

      Registrations of electric two-wheelers fell nearly 27 percent in May, compared to AprilOla slips to No 2 in May 2022Rising fuel prices and increased cost of petrol powered two wheelers turned buyer’s attention towards electric scooters in India. These e-scooters not only allow buyers to save on fuel costs but also relate to lower cost of maintenance and come in with several State and Central Government subsidies.Sales of electric scooters took off at a grand start. Sales escalated to percentage increases unseen by petrol powered scooter OEMs, causing many such manufacturers to venture into the electric arena. While things went well for a few months, they declined in May 2022.One of the main reasons for the decline of sales is the huge shortage of semiconductor chips. Another reason could also be because of recent electric scooter fire incidents. Numerous electric scooters have been involved in fire hazards across India in the past month causing buyers to be more cautious in their purchases. Govt also took notice, and brought electric two wheeler makers such as Okinawa, Ola, Pure EV and Boom Motors under some surveillance.Ola, Hero Electric, Okinawa Post Sales De-GrowthOla, Hero Electric and Okinawa, the leaders in the e-scooter segment, have noted a substantial decrease in sales in May 2022. Ola has slipped to No 2, after taking the No 1 spot in April 2022. Ola Electric still dominates the segment even as sales dipped 31.66 percent MoM to 8,681 units in May 2022, down from 12,702 units sold in April 2022. This was a volume de-growth of 4,021 units.Electric Scooter Sales May 2022. Source – VAHANOkinawa sales also dipped as much as 19.28 percent to 8,888 units in the past month, down 2,123 units over 11,011 units sold in April 2022. Hero Electric has posted the maximum MoM de-growth of 58.36 percent to 2,739 units in May 2022, down from 6,578 units sold in April 2022. Hero Electric seems to have been affected the most due to parts shortage. Just two months ago, they were the No 1 electric scooter brand in India. Hero Electric aims to bounce back to No 1 soon.Ampere also posted a MoM decline by 15.46 percent to 5,529 units in May 2022, down from 6,540 units sold in April 2022 leading to volume de-growth of 1,011 units. Ather Energy, on the other hand, recorded its highest monthly sales to date. The company has seen sales of its e-scooters increase 26.45 percent to 3,098 units in the past month, up from 2,450 units sold in April 2022. The company sells the Ather 450X and 450 Plus in the market. TVS Motor has also seen 2,637 units of the i-Qube sold in May 2022 while Bajaj Auto has noted good sales of its Chetak e-scooter in the past month expanding sales to more cities in in the country.E-Scooter Fire Hazards and RecallsPure EV has issued a voluntary recall of 2,000 models of ETrance Plus and EPluto 7G while Okinawa Autotech has also announced a recall of 3,215 units of the Praise Pro. At the end of March 2022 a unit of Ola S1 Pro caught fire in Pune and the company issued a recall of 1,441 electric scooters to fix the issue. This draws attention to added research into battery chemistries, and management systems along with cell constructions to avoid such instances in the future.The Government of India is conducting further investigations into these electric fires and is set to announce a new policy to ensure better quality of batteries and Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport & Highways, has also confirmed that the government will list out strict rules for EV quality. In comparison, KTM 125 Duke makes 14.5 bhp and 12 Nm from its 125cc engine. Duke seems to get the torque benefit over Piega. But Piega strikes back with its 139 kg kerb weight which is lower than Duke’s 159 kg.2022 FB Mondial Piega 125ccFB Mondial has priced the Piega 125 at EUR 4,400 (Rs. 3.66 lakh approx) while KTM has priced 125 Duke at EUR 5,450 (Rs. 4.54 lakh approx). Piega 125 is not only lighter and slightly more powerful than 125 Duke, but it is also significantly cheaper.FB Mondial is not expected to bring its Piega 125 to Indian shores as it will be almost twice its European price. The new 2022 iQube comes in 3 variants, iQube, iQube S and iQube ST. Even though there are significant similarities between the three, they also share a lot in common. First batch of new iQube has started to arrive at dealer showrooms across India.2022 TVS iQube HighlightsAll three variants of the 2022 TVS iQube get Li-ion battery packs with IP 67 ingress protection certification. It also gets AIS 156 certification where the battery is subjected to direct and indirect fire for over 2 minutes. This new stringent safety certification will give TVS iQube owners peace of mind against rising EV fire hazard cases. All three variants also get disc brakes at the front and get futuristic looks that mostly resemble the previous iQube.In terms of suspension, the front gets a telescopic setup while the rear gets twin shock absorbers with preload adjustment. The scooter also gets 12” wheels at the front and back with 90 section and 90 profile rubber. In terms of charging, the scooter gets an option of a portable charger which lets users charge the scooter virtually anywhere. TVS also lets the users choose between three power ratings for the chargers at 650 W, 950 W and 1.5 kW options.2022 TVS iQube Top SpeedOther common features include a Smart Xonnect system with smart assistant Alexa integration, 0-Park Assist (reverse park assistance), and a colourful dashboard with customisable themes and faces. The base model also doesn’t get a fast charging option. iQube base variant gets a choice of three colours that are exclusive to the base variant, White, Shining Red and Titanium Grey. It starts at an on-road price of Rs. 98,564 in Delhi and 1,11,663 in Bengaluru.iQube S Mid VariantThe mid variant iQube S comes with a 7” colour TFT dashboard with HMI interaction in the form of a 5-way joystick with 4 directions and 1 clickable format. With the joystick, the user can interact with the dashboard which gets more features than the base variant. It comes with a 3.08 kWh battery pack and promises a ‘real range’ of 100 km. The top speed is limited to 78 kph and the boot is still smaller than the ST variant. The S variant also misses out on the fast charging system. iQube S variant gets 4 colour choices that are exclusive to the S variant, Mercury Grey, Copper Bronze, Mint Blue and Lucid yellow. The S variant is priced at an on-road price of 1,08,690 in Delhi and 1,19,663 in Bengaluru which is an increment of Rs. 8,000 to 10,000 over the base variant. The top speed gets a slight boost at 82 kph and gets a big 32L boot that can easily accommodate two helmets. The ST variant is the only one that gets fast charging support. iQube ST variant gets 4 colour choices that are exclusive to the ST variant, Starlight Blue, Coral Sand, Copper Bronze Matte and Titanium Grey Matte. The pricing for the ST variant isn’t available at the moment. TVS also promises running costs of Rs. 3 per day with the ST variant with a 20 km commute per day and Rs. 5 per unit cost of electricity.ConclusionTVS iQube appears to be eyeing for the conservative scooter buyers that are concerned with the reliability and safety of the flock of electric scooters launched by new and inexperienced manufacturers. With AIS 156 fireproof rating and the ease of mind associated with a product coming from a mainstream manufacturer is expected to draw a lot of customers towards the 2022 iQube. Matte paint jobs are only available with the ST variant. Colour choices are not standard across the range which makes it hard to choose for the customer. Given the timeline of the partnership announcement, we reckon that the first product should be pretty close to being ready for its world premiere.Bajaj Triumph Scrambler RenderingThe modular medium displacement platform to be born out of this Indo-English alliance could adopt multiple body styles. We think a retro-classic scrambler and a low-riding cruiser are two of the top possibilities. Our design specialist Pratyush Rout has envisioned the former, taking cues from Triumph’s iconic Bonneville family.Earlier this year, a prototype of what is reported to be the Bajaj-Triumph Scrambler was spotted testing along with a sobered up roadster variant. The prototypes supported this claim by sporting USD front forks, front and rear disc brakes with ABS, TFT instrument cluster, LED headlight and so on.At the time of initial announcement, Bajaj-Triumph revealed that the new range of jointly developed products will have a staring price of under Rs 2 lakhs. With pandemic induced supply chain challenges, it would be a difficult task to stick to this pricing commitment but if at all any OEM can pull off such an attractive pricing, it is Bajaj.Bajaj Triumph Motorcycle LaunchIt is no secret that with its upcoming family of medium displacement single-cylinder premium motorcycles, Bajaj and Triumph aim to put an end to Royal Enfield’s near-monopoly in the segment. Its been over 50 years since Triumph last made a single-cylinder motorcycle but given this segment is growing at a brisk pace globally, it can’t afford not to participate.       In Chinese market, Honda U-Go electric scooter is offered in light and standard variants, priced at RMB 7,499 (~ INR 87k) and RMB 7,999 (~ INR 93k), respectivelyNew Honda Electric ScooterAs electric two-wheeler sales continue to register strong growth, established players like Honda have started working on EV options for Indian market. Over the next five years, it is expected that OEMs like Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki and Hero MotoCorp will have multiple electric two-wheelers in their portfolio. In case of Honda, one such possibility could be U-Go electric scooter, a design patent of which has now been filed in India.In China, U-Go electric scooter is manufactured as part of the joint venture between Honda Motor Japan and Guangzhou Motors Group Company. The joint entity manufactures other electric two-wheelers as well such as U-be, e-POP and e-SCR. Honda could consider any of these or their derivatives in future, as part of their EV portfolio expansion plan for India.Honda U-Go featuresWith its compact design, Honda U-Go primarily targets everyday urban commuters. It has a cute profile that is preferred by younger audiences. While Honda U-Go has a compact design, it still manages to provide ample seating space for both rider and pillion.New Honda Electric Scooter – Design patented in IndiaThe scooter has been designed from a utilitarian perspective, as is evident with features such as large footboard space, front hook and cargo box, 26-litre under seat storage, folding rear foot rest and USB charging. Riding comfort has been optimized with features such as flat seat and ergonomically placed handlebar. Even smaller users won’t have any issues handling this scooter when zipping through city streets.Honda U-Go performanceThere are two variants on offer in China, a standard version and a light version. U-Go standard variant has a rated power of 1200 watt whereas the light variant offers 800 watt. Top speed is 53 kmph and 43 kmph, respectively. Estimated range of the standard variant is around 65 km on a full charge. Users can increase the range to 130 kms, by opting for a second battery pack. However, this upgrade will limit the available under seat storage.Both U-Go variants utilize a 48v, 30 amp removable battery pack. Much of the other specifications are the same for both variants such as gradeability of 14°. U-Go electric scooter is 1,790 mm long, 680 mm wide and 1080 mm tall. Ground clearance is 130 mm whereas wheelbase is 1300 mm. Both variants have kerb weight of 83 kg.Honda U-Go Electric ScooterApart from fully electric two-wheelers, Honda is also planning to introduce flex-fuel vehicles in India. Both, domestic sales, and exports improved YoY. A sales comparison would be disparate owing to low base sales a year earlier. Back in May 2021, a severe Covid-19 wave brought things to a standstill in a desperate effort to contain pandemic spread and fatalities.Suzuki reports domestic sales in May 2022 at 60,518 units. Up from 12,513 units, volume gain is reported at 48k units. Exports stood at just over 11k units, up from 6,688 units. Volume gain stands at 4,320 units. Total sales rose to 71,526 units, up from 19,201 units. Volume gain is at over 52k units. Last month, Suzuki Motorcycle India began deliveries of V-Strom SX, a 250cc sports adventure tourer.Suzuki Motorcycle India exportsMoM total sales decline is marginal at under a percent. Total sales fell from 71,987 units. Volume loss stands at 461 units. Domestic sales are up 11 percent from 54,327 units. Volume gain is up at 6,191 units. Exports fell from 17,660 units. Sales decline is reported at 37.67 percent at volume loss of 6,652 units.Suzuki Motorcycle India is important to the brand’s global presence. In this two prong strategy, sales growth in the domestic market adds to the company’s overall sales. The manufacturer is also keen on improving on exports from India. This will benefit from a concerted effort to boost exports from India. This pertains to small capacity bikes (125cc – 300cc).Suzuki Sales May 2022 Sales growth targetSteady domestic sales over a period has seen Suzuki monthly sales edge over Yamaha and Royal Enfield on a monthly basis. The company had previously targeted yearly sales of a million units by 2020.However, 2020 took the world by surprise. And sales targets were thrown off track. Uncertainties related to the pandemic continued to raise its head in phases through 2021. In comparison, 2022 has gotten off to a stronger start. However, Covid-19 related uncertainties exist. And in recent months, supply shortage of chips and semiconductors has continued to affect manufacturing. Keeway is expected to launch K-Lite 250V in India soon and pricing for the cruiser is leaked at dealer level.The cruiser motorcycle was expected to be priced around the ballpark of Royal Enfield Meteor 350. But recent leaks reveal that prices of the upcoming cruiser by Keeway are around that of Royal Enfield’s 650 twins. Even though more mature and established products like the Interceptor 650 and Continental GT 650 seem to crush Keeway on paper, the story is quite different in reality.Benelli Keeway 250cc CruiserKeeway in Europe is known for making motorcycles that resemble Harley-Davidson products. K-Lite 250V seems to take the same route. It has a lot of bits and parts that easily resemble Harley-Davidson’s sporty motorcycles. Despite being a typical cruiser, it gets little to negligible chrome on body, making it look new-age and sporty.The motorcycle looks like the company’s own K-Lite 125, but on steroids. It gets a chunkier seat, USD forks, fuel tank and tyres. Despite a low seat height of 715 mm, it has a decent 160 mm of ground clearance which will appeal a lot to Indians. The seat is a single-piece unit with a stepped layout. The pillion also gets a backrest.Benelli Keeway 250cc CruiserThe front suspension gets USD forks and a twin-shock setup at the rear. On the front, tyre size is a fat 120/80 wrapped around a 16” alloy wheel. At the back, it gets a 140/70 tyre wrapped around a 16” alloy wheel. Keeway K-Lite 250V also gets a single disc setup at both ends with the safety net of dual-channel ABS.
