1500-HP Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport Is a $3.6 Million Apex Hunter

  • Bugatti goes for sport purists with the Pur Sport version of its Chiron, with a 110-pound weight loss plus changes to the transmission and the suspension, among other improvements.
  • The Chiron Pur Sport keeps the 1500-hp quad-turbo W-16 of the regular Chiron.
  • Then there’s that massive wing. The Pur Sport will go into production later in 2020, in a limited edition of 60.

Bugatti has long been a purveyor of fast cars—the fastest, actually. In fact, last year, Bugatti’s Chiron Super Sport 300+ was the first production car to break the 300-mph mark, but after speaking with customers, Bugatti realized that there was also demand from its faithful to devise a variant that was more driver focused. Specializing in tackling the most demanding corners, tracks, and twisting back roads, the Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport is born.

For the Pur Sport, the 1500-hp quad-turbocharged W-16 engine’s power output remains the same as the standard Chiron’s, but there’s an additional 200 rpm added to the tach, increasing the redline to 6900 rpm, presumably for a bit more to wind out when you’re in the twisty stuff. Additionally, 80 percent of the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission has been revised for a 15 percent closer gear-ratio spread that should help the Pur Sport to stay in its powerband longer and exit corners quicker.

Bugatti also has promised a 110-pound weight reduction. To achieve these savings, the Pur Sport has a lightweight titanium exhaust that is 3D printed, and there’s alcantara in large swaths of the interior. The large 74.8-inch fixed rear spoiler also sheds 22 pounds, as it negates the need for the hydraulic actuators that articulate the rear spoiler on the standard Chiron. Finally, the Pur Sport gets an even lighter set of wheels that drop 35 pounds of unsprung mass with specialized rings called “aero blades.” These are designed to evacuate turbulent air near the wheel and channel it down the side of the vehicle to the large rear diffuser. To go along with the new wheels, Bugatti and Michelin co-developed a new Michelin Sport Cup 2R tire specifically for the Pur Sport, sized 285/30R-20 at the front and 355/25R-21 at the rear. The new tires are said to increase lateral grip by 10 percent; the more the merrier.

Perhaps the greatest change to the Pur Sport is to its suspension, which has been firmed up by 65 percent in the front and 33 percent in the rear. Yet Bugatti claims no discernible change in ride comfort. Revised damper tuning and wheel camber, plus additional front and rear carbon-fiber anti-roll bars, allow for more immediate turn-in and added steering feel. There will also be an added Sport+ drive mode that will allow for later traction and stability-control intervention when tracking.

With the aggressive front splitter, exposed carbon fiber, and massive new wing, the Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport is certainly a wondrous car to behold. If you’re reading this and hoping to get your name on the list, know that the Pur Sport will go into production in the second half of 2020, limited to 60 units, and cost around $3.6 million, but you know what they say: you get what you pay for.
