    India is a well-known car manufacturing hub, but building supercars is not our specialty. However, there are a few Indian startups that wants to change this perception. Mean Metal Motors (MMM), an electric vehicle startup based out of Bangalore, has officially unveiled a prototype of its upcoming hypercar named Azani.
    The hypercar is based on the M-Zero Concept previewed by the company back in 2015 and has been pegged as India’s first indigenously developed electric supercar. MMM now wants to go a step further by turning Azani into a full working prototype. The EV startup has revealed the car in its full form along with some of its critical specifications.
    Exterior Design
    From the outset, Azani looks like a supercar straight out of a sci-fi movie with an aerodynamic profile. The supercar is essentially a mid-engine two-door Coupe that appears to resemble the shape of a stream flowing. Some other styling highlights include its LED headlamps with LED DRLs, flared wheel arches and a bulge on the roof.
    Features on offer
    Once carefully looked at, the front face of the car resonates with the company’s logo slapped onto the bonnet. Details of its interiors haven’t been revealed yet but surely the company would try to create the ambiance of an actual race car. Azani would be offered with a range of high-tech gizmos but highlights of the cabin will be the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) built-in its micro-factories to increase efficiency and reduce costs.

    These will also feature over the air (OTA) updates. Other features to make it to the equipment list include Advanced Morphing Seats, Advanced Telematics, Augmented Reality Displays, M-log Integration and Torque Vectoring to name a few.
    Azani is built on a skateboard aluminum space frame chassis which is highly flexible and could be used across various models. MMM claims that this modular platform will be built at one of its micro-factories which will be set up at less than one-fifth the cost of a traditional automobile manufacturing facility. The modular components to be utilised are said to decrease supplier margins by 25 percent.
    Hypercar Performance
    Tapping on to its performance, Azani is said to be powered by an electric motor that could generate a mammoth 1000 horses and 1000 Nm of peak torque. The motor will derive its energy from a 120kWh battery pack which could return a maximum range of around 530km in a single charge. Its top speed will be capped at 354MMMkmph while it can sprint 0-60 mph (97 kph) in just 2.1 seconds.

    Mahindra, like all major automakers, has been planning to venture into electric mobility with passenger vehicles for quite some time now. Unfortunately, there have been numerous delays for some obvious reasons. Test mules of what appears to be the production-spec eKUV100 have been recently spotted.
    The electric car made its first appearance as a pre-production concept at last year’s AutoExpo. Since then, there have been no developments regarding eKUV100 until now, when the e-SUV has made its debut on the official website of Mahindra Electric. Hat tip to automotive enthusiast Devi V Prasad Reddy, for sharing the update.
    Exterior Styling
    It has been pitched as an entry-level EV for the masses in the Indian auto market. For most parts of it, the exterior styling of KUV100 Electric is in line with its IC engine-powered sibling except for the closed-off front grille due to absence of a radiator.
    The grille also offers improved aerodynamics and features small arrow-shaped inserts, six of which are finished in blue. The electric crossover gets two charging ports, one on each front fender. In addition, there are blue highlights on headlamps and taillamps.

    The front bumper houses a very wide air inlet which also gets a tow hook in case the car gets stuck somewhere. The number plate housing at the tailgate features a thick chrome plate at the top with interesting ‘+’ and ‘-’ signs on it. All other design elements are similar to the fossil-fueled KUV100. There are also some subtle styling differences spotted in the test mule in comparison to the concept showcased at AutoExpo last year.
    For example, the model at AutoExpo stood on alloy wheels with a different design which featured blue inserts on each of its spokes. Further, the charging flap wore Mahindra Electric (ME) badging while the C-pillar flaunted a unique triangular badge. The e-KUV100 in the picture is seen wrapped under a dark shade of blue. It is also seen wearing black body claddings over wheel arches and door panels.
    Specifications
    At the time of its display in the biennial auto event, Mahindra had disclosed some of its specifications. The eKUV100 concept was fitted with a 15.9kWh battery pack which sent power to a single electric motor mounted on the front axle. The resultant power output stands at 54 bhp (40kW) and 120 Nm of torque.
    This powertrain could return a range of 147 km on a single charge. These are very modest figures from every standard. The battery could be charged from zero to 100 percent in 5hr 45min using a regular AC charger (on the front right fender flap).
    Using a DC fast charger, 0-80 percent of the battery could be replenished within 55 minutes (on the front left fender flap). Mahindra had priced the EV crossover at Rs 8.25 lakh back then. At the time of its launch, it could be offered at a price of Rs 9-11 lakh (ex-showroom). More

    Tata Nexon Electric Demand Is As Good As Nexon Diesel Demand

    With electric mobility given a serious push in the country, we are witnessing a rise in demand for electric vehicles. This has further been aided by soaring fuel prices in recent months. On a related note, Tata Motors has revealed that demand for Nexon EV has gained a lot of traction in recent months and is currently on par with its diesel-powered sibling.
    This development was confirmed by PB Balaji, Chief Financial Officer, Tata Motors, in an interaction with media during the company’s earnings call. He went on to reveal that the order book for Nexon EV in July 2021 is neck to neck with the diesel variant. Sales of Nexon EV and diesel variants of Nexon are comparable where both iterations of the subcompact SUV are available for sale.
    Surge in demand for EVs
    In fact, in some states like Maharashtra and Gujarat, sales of battery-powered Nexon have taken over its oil burner counterpart. According to Balaji, the combination of benefits from the revised FAME II policies and various subsidies by different state governments are some of the primary reasons for the favourable demand for EVs. The company’s share of electric vehicles has risen from 0.2 percent two years ago to 3 percent of total sales in June-July 2021.
    Tata Motors is hopeful that Nexon EV’s shares will soon account for 5 percent of total passenger vehicle sales of the company. Nexon EV witnessed its highest quarterly sales when Tata was able to sell 1,715 units of the subcompact electric crossover in the April-June quarter. A total of 53,800 cars were sold by Tata Motors during this period.

    Jubilant by seeing the rise in demand, the homegrown automaker has announced that it will launch as many as ten electric vehicles by 2025. The company has already announced its association with Tata Power in setting up an ecosystem of 400 charging points across the country.
    Lower Running Cost of EVs
    Another point in favour of electric vehicles is their low running costs. In many states, prices of petrol, and in some cases diesel as well, have surged past Rs 100 per litre in recent times. Hence the industry has witnessed a strong shift towards EVs. For instance, as per industry estimates, the running cost of petrol and diesel cars is about Rs 4-7 per kilometre in Delhi as compared to Rs 1.6-1.7 for CNG cars and Rs 1.47 for electric cars.
    Tata Motors is presently in the process of ramping up production capacity for Nexon EV but is constrained by the chip shortage. While share of diesel-powered models across the passenger vehicle segment has shrunk significantly over the past year, Tata Motors currently has no plans to phase out the diesel variant of the Nexon.
    In fact, Tata Motors has plans to launch a string of new EVs in India in the coming years. All their new generation cars are built on platforms which are EV compatible. Depending on demand, the company can launch new EVs. Next up planned in the EV space from Tata is most likely Altroz EV followed by HBX EV. More

    India’s best selling electric car has just gone on sale in Nepal. Tata Motors has announced the launch of Nexon EV in Nepal via their Sipradi Trading Pvt. Ltd. Price starts from Nepal Rupees 35.99 lakh, which is about Indian Rs 22.5 lakh. Bookings in Nepal are now open. You can book against a payment of NPR 25k.
    In India, Nexon EV is priced from Rs 13.99 lakh to Rs 16.56 lakh (ex-sh); making it around Rs.1 lakh to Rs3.5 lakh pricier over the top spec Nexon diesel variant. Demand for Nexon EV in India is similar to that of Nexon diesel variant.

    Tata Nexon EV is a 5 seater compact SUV that is presented in three variants of XM, XZ Plus, and XZ Plus Lux. It measures 3993mm in length, 1811mm in width and 1606mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,498mm. Ground clearance is at 205mm while kerb weight is at 1400 kgs.     Features and Safety Equipment
    Tata Nexon EV is based on the same platform as the petrol / diesel Nexon that has been awarded 5 Star Global NCAP safety rating. It is presented in 3 colours of Signature Teal Blue, Moonlit Silver and Glacier White. New Dark Edition is also on offer. It receives features such as automatic headlamps, automatic wipers, a sunroof, roof mounted antenna and body coloured bumpers.
    The interiors are done up in a black and grey colour scheme and sports a 5 seater layout with rear seats folded in a 40:60 ratio. Infotainment is via a 7 inch touchscreen system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay along with connected car technology. On board conveniences include push button start, rear parking camera, 8 way manually adjustable driver’s seat and a 6 way adjustable passenger seat. Safety is via dual front airbags, child seat anchor points, seat belt warning and hill hold and hill descent control.
    More recently, the company added new alloy wheels to the Nexon EV replacing the older V-Shaped alloy wheels.     Drive Range
    Tata Nexon EV receives a 30.2 kWh lithium ion battery pack along with an electric motor which is capable of 129 hp power and 245 Nm torque. It gets regenerative braking and two modes of Drive and Sport. Braking is via disc brake in the front and drum brake at the rear and independent MacPherson strut with coil spring suspension in front and twist beam with dual path strut at the rear. Charging via a 3.3 kW AC home charger is possible upto 100 percent in 8 hours while a fast charger offers upto 80 percent charge in 60 minutes to offer a claimed range of 312 kms.
    Tata Motors has 10 new EVs planned for launch by 2025. These will include the Altroz EV and HBX EV, etc, while the company plans to boost charging infrastructure in the country.     Audi has launched the company’s first ever fully electric vehicle- E-Tron SUV in India. A total of 3 electric SUVs are on offer under the e-tron range. These are e-tron 50, e-tron 55 and e-tron Sportback 55. Price starts from Rs 1 crore and goes all the way to Rs 1.17 crore. All prices are ex-sh.

    Exterior Styling
    In the front is a blanked out single-frame octagonal-shaped front grille in gray colour with vertical slats. It receives a pair of LED headlamps with Audi’s Matrix LED technology which are flanked by integrated DRLs on both ends. The SUV rolls on 20-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels and gets a sloping roofline.
    The exterior wing mirrors are probably the highlight of the car’s exterior which displays the rear image on an OLED screen placed between the dashboard and door panel using a small camera. Its rear end flaunts a pair of LED taillights connected by an illuminated stripe across the boot lid. Other notable highlights include a roof-mounted spoiler, a chrome-embellished diffuser plate and a shark-fin antenna.

    Maruti Suzuki Electric Car Launch In FY 2025 – Price Range Rs 10 Lakh

    News of a Maruti Suzuki EV coming to India have been in the market for the last few years now. Speculation and spyshots had suggested that the first EV from Maruti would be the Electric WagonR, which was spotted testing in multiple locations across the country.
    However, later Maruti had clarified that there were no immediate plans to launch the Wagon R EV. With increasing push and support from the Indian Government, most OEMs in India have started taking their initial steps towards venturing into the Indian 4-wheeler EV market, which is still in its preliminary stage.
    New Maruti Electric Car – Suzuki’s First
    Tata, MG Motor, Hyundai and Mahindra already have/have had some kind of EV offering for the Indian market. Maruti, being the largest automaker in the country certainly doesn’t want to be left behind.
    New report now confirms that Suzuki will be releasing its first all-electric vehicle for the mass markets by FY 2025. The vehicle will be making its debut in India and will be later introduced in the European and Japanese markets. After taking into account the Government subsidies, the EV is expected to be priced around the $13,700 mark, which would roughly translate into INR 10 lakhs.

    Maruti WagonR EV which is currently on test in India, comes with updated styling. It receives revised bumpers and side profile. Other features also include a high mounted stop lamp, body coloured door handles and black cladding on windows and rear bumper.
    Challenges Ahead
    Till date, Maruti’s dominances in the Indian market has been majorly due to its heavy market share in the small car segment. While models from its NEXA range do command a premium over their Arena counterparts, Maruti is still associated as a budget-friendly car manufacturer.
    Venturing into the EV market could be difficult as the entry-level price tag would fall around the INR 10 lakhs+ mark. Also, Maruti would have to ensure that it is able to crack the code on improving the overall range per charge, without compromising on the space and Value For Money quotient.
    Governmental Policies
    The Indian Government had set itself a target of ensuring that around 30% of the new cars which are purchased in 2030, are electric. To further push the customer preferences, the Government had rolled out multiple incentives on purchase of EVs, which summed up to INR 100 Billion. The initial plan for the support was for a 3 year period which started in 2019. However, due to a muted response and the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the Government decided to extend the incentive policy by additional 2 years.

    Tata Motors recently unveiled its new sub-brand focused on electric vehicles (EV) called Xpres which will cater to the demand of fleet consumers exclusively. The homegrown auto company has now launched its first model under this new sub-brand called Xpres-T EV which is based on the facelifted battery-powered Tigor.
    The electric sedan is now available for booking at selected dealerships across the country. Deliveries have now started with first batch delivered to Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd., in Kolkata. Price starts from Rs 9.75 lakhs for the XM+ variant and goes to Rs 9.9 lakh for the XT+ variant. All prices are ex-sh.
    The new Xpres branding on the car’s body panels will distinguish itself from the Tigor EV sold for private buyers. The new Xpres T-EV carries a set of visual updates over the current Tigor EV whose test mules were spotted on multiple occasions recently.
    Exterior highlights
    Xpres-T EV flaunts an updated front face with a new headlight setup along with a new sharper nose featuring a glossy black grille consisting of tri-arrow patterns on each side. The front grille is contoured with a blue-coloured strip underneath. Additionally, the charging socket is now housed in the front grille itself. Other exterior styling highlights include projector LED headlights, LED DRLs and redesigned fog lamp housings. It also gets a revised bumper with a wider air intake.

    Interiors of Xpres-T EV will be in line with the standard IC engine-powered Tigor barring the blue highlights which remind us of its electric powertrain underneath. The air-con vents are surrounded by similar blue highlights. Features added to the latest iteration of the electric compact sedan are a larger touchscreen infotainment unit, a digital instrument display and a multi-functional steering wheel.
    Specifications
    Coming to its specification, Xpres-T EV will be offered in two derivatives depending on battery configuration- standard and extended. The former is available with a 16.5kWh high energy density battery which delivers an acclaimed range of 165km (ARAI) on a single charge. Whereas the latter is equipped with a 21.5kWh battery pack rated to return a claimed range of 213km (ARAI) on a single charge.
    Both variants are powered by a 70V three-phase induction motor which has been tuned to deliver an output of 40 bhp and 105 Nm of peak torque, identical figures to the pre-facelift Tigor EV. Using a standard AC wall charger, the battery could be replenished 0-100 percent in eight hours and 11.5 hours for 16.5kWh and 21.5kWh battery packs respectively.
    While using a 15kW DC fast charger, the battery packs could be charged 0-80 percent in 90 minutes and 110 minutes respectively. The facelifted Tigor EV for private buyers is also expected to be available for bookings after some time. More

Somewhat sweetening the pot, the E-Tron’s starting price (including destination) has also dropped to $66,995 for the base Premium model.

    The E-Tron has been joined by a new Sportback variant. The underpinnings, powertrain and tech are all the same as the aforementioned electric SUV, but the E-Tron Sportback features a slightly lower roofline and a windswept and silhouette — coupe-like, if you squint. You’d think that the more aerodynamic profile would net more range, but the Sportback’s sportier tuning only returns about 218 miles per charge. It’s pricier, too, starting at $70,195.

    BMW’s i3 has always been a little weird looking and expensive at $45,445, but it does offer a few things nothing else in the class can match. The biggest of these is its carbon-fiber chassis, which increases stiffness, reduces weight and looks great on a spec sheet. The i3 is definitely meant to be a city car with a relatively short range — up to 153 miles. But it’s easy to park and a nice place to spend time, so we can’t fault it too much.

    The Bolt EV was the mainstream car industry’s first real, practical answer to Tesla’s electric juggernauts. It’s an affordable little hatchback that doesn’t stick out like the i3 and today, it packs plenty of all-electric range at 259 miles — a nice increase over its initial 236-mile range.     The Bolt EUV tucks the Bolt EV’s battery pack and electric car platform beneath a slightly taller and longer body. The increased weight and aerodynamic profile cost the electric utility vehicle a bit of range, dropping to a still-decent 247 miles, according to the EPA. Other reasons you may want to consider the larger EUV include its increased capacity for cargo and second-row passengers and to get your hands on — or rather, hands off — GM’s Super Cruise advanced driver assistance tech. The bigger Bolt strikes this summer starting at $38,495.

    Ford’s Mach-E may be a Mustang in name alone, but it’s an EV through and through. This electric SUV is offered in a variety of configurations, from the single-motor “Select” spec starting at $43,995 to the Premium AWD Extended range model at $54,400. At its best, the rear-driven California Route 1 Edition cruises for up to 305 miles with a full charge.Later this year, high-performance Mach-E GT and GT Performance models will join the lineup, boasting up to 634 pound-feet of torque and a 0-60 sprint in just 3.5 seconds.     Hyundai is getting way more into the EV game, but the car that started it out for them was the Ioniq Electric, and you can still get it. It’s basic in almost every sense of the word, but its range has gotten a nice increase since its debut to 170 miles. This bad boy lists for just a hair over $30,000, and that makes it a decent deal.

It has excellent range, weird-but-fun styling, tons of standard equipment and all the other killer Hyundai stuff (including a great warranty). The Kona EV is a lot quicker and more fun to drive than you’d expect, while its range of 258 miles puts it among the upper-echelon of modern battery-electrics. With a price tag starting at $36,990, you’re getting a lot for your money.

    Jaguar was one of the last companies we’d have expected to release a purely electric SUV. But it did, and the decision ended up working in its favor. The I-Pace looks like nothing else, drives like a Jag and offers a real alternative to the Tesla Model X. The I-Pace is a practical beast: Having been designed from the ground up to be an EV, it has plenty of space for people and things and a substantial range of 234 miles.

    No, we’re not joking. This newcomer has the distinction of being the least expensive new electric car you can buy today: The K27 costs a no-haggle, no-nonsense $19,999. And that’s before the $7,500 federal tax credit, which brings the cost down to $12,499. That’s cheap for any new car, but that price also only gets you a ridiculously short range of just 59 miles per charge and an… unorthodox aesthetic.

    Kia’s Niro EV is Kia’s best effort yet at making a fully battery-electric SUV that offers good range for not a lot of money (239 miles, $38,500 to start), and it surprised us when we drove it for the first time. It’s more fun than its looks or specs would suggest, and it’s packed with a deep roster of standard features that make modern Kias so hard to beat for value.

    Mini Cooper SE

    You may not remember this, but Mini was actually an early pioneer of modern EVs. Back in 2009, the automaker underwent a large-scale test of electric Mini E hatchbacks, building hundreds and leasing them to hand-picked consumers and utility companies. It gave up on the tech after a couple years, and it’s taken until now for the brand to offer a BEV for sale. The 2021 Mini Cooper SE Electric promises to be one of the most affordable EVs on the market. Priced from $29,900 plus delivery, when you factor in the full federal tax credit and potential state and local incentives, you could own one for well under $20,000. There’s a catch, of course: limited range. The Mini Electric is only estimated at 110 miles of range, about as short an e-leash as you’ll find today. It’s not a compliance car sold only in California-emissions markets — Mini says the SE is a 50-state model.

    Ah yes, the granddaddy of all affordable electric cars. There is a reason that the Leaf is the world’s bestselling EV by a factor of a zillion. And if you’ve spent time in one recently, you’ll know it’s easy to see why. The Leaf is a simple, well-built and affordable electric car that offers reasonable range — 149 miles — but still feels like the future.The Leaf Plus is Nissan’s answer to cars like the Tesla Model 3, the Kona Electric and the Bolt. It has the Leaf line’s best range yet at 226 miles, and while it’s not as cheap as the standard Leaf, it offers more for your money. More what? Power and torque mostly. Some of its tech is a little old, but that means it’s well-proved at this point.

    The second plug-in model from the fledgling Polestar brand is also its first to run completely on battery power. The Polestar 2 fastback — a sort of tall, liftback sedan chimera — hits the ground running with impressive interior appointments and gorgeous Scandinavian style. The Polestar 2 boasts a range of 233 miles per charge. We think that’s more than enough range for daily driving and then some, but the 2’s starting price of $61,200 puts it in the unenviable position of being cross-shopped with the much longer-ranging variants of the Tesla Model S and Y.

    Porsche’s first battery-electric car arrives to take on the Tesla Model S. It initially went on sale in Turbo and Turbo S forms, packing 670 and 750 horsepower, respectively. The Turbo starts at $150,900 while the more powerful S comes in at $185,000. This year sees the addition of a new rear-drive Taycan base model, starting at $81,250. The EPA-estimated ranges have also been revised, improving across the board for 4S and Turbo models.     The Model S has been around in more or less the same form since 2012. It’s gotten several updates to its hardware, styling and performance — and is still the reigning champ of all-electric range. It’s also $79,990 before adding things like different wheels, paint or Tesla’s dubiously named Full Self-Driving feature, which feels like a lot for one of the oldest vehicles here.Like the smaller Model 3, its lineup has been revised for 2021. However in this case, it ditched its Standard Range model to make room for the new top-spec Plaid and Plaid Plus, which Tesla promises will be “the quickest production cars ever.” Tesla also estimates that these super sedans will boast 390 miles and “over 520 miles” of range, respectively. Unfortunately, the EPA hasn’t yet confirmed those claims, and the Plaid pair don’t go on sale until the fall. We’ll update when they do. For now, here’s the new breakdown:

    Tesla Model X

    The Tesla Model X is like the Model S in that it’s fast and expensive, but it’s also bigger, roomier and has the craziest doors to be found on a production car this side of the Lamborghini Aventador. Thanks to a similar update to the Model S, the X Standard Range is no more, but improvements to the Long Range Plus mode increase max range to 371 miles on a single charge. That’s not bad for something so big. There will also be a Model X Plaid — but not Plaid Plus — in the fall 2021. Until then, here’s how the Model X line shakes out:

    Think of the Tesla Model Y as the larger, frumpier version of the Model 3: Smaller than the Model X, the Y still offers seating for seven (somehow) and the same powerful electric powertrain. According to the EPA, it’ll do an impressive 326 miles on a full charge in Long Range Spec. The Performance model offers better performance (of course), but at the cost of a few miles range versus last year. And, like the rest of Tesla’s lineup, the Standard Range model is no more.

    The XC40 Recharge’s $20,000 premium over the combustion-powered XC40 is a hard pill to swallow, but if you look past the sticker, the price is somewhat justified. For starters, the $54,985 EV’s 486 pound-feet of performance are a class beyond the standard T5 powertrain’s 258 torques, as are its all-new Android Automotive cabin tech and luxurious interior appointments. We just wish its range was equally impressive: The 208 miles it offers is a touch low for this class and price range.

    Taking the place of the humble E-Golf is Volkswagen’s first dedicated electric vehicle in the US, the 2021 VW ID 4. The first deliveries of its electric SUV should begin later this year. The performance is fine and the styling is unobtrusive, but its promise of utility, capacity and up to 250 miles of range make the ID 4 a fairly practical choice for families looking to go electric. The Tesla Model Y offers more range and better driving dynamics, but starting at $41,190 before incentives, the VW is more budget-friendly.
