Rs 16,000 Crore to Drive Mahindra’s EV Ambitions from FY22 to FY27 – Mahindra Chakan EV manufacturing facility
Mahindra’s EV manufacturing and battery assembly facility is located within the company’s 2.83 sq km Chakan hub, India. This fully integrated ecosystem focuses on producing Electric Origin SUVs, aligning with India’s growing electric vehicle demand. The area dedicated to EV operations measures 88,000 square metres, equipped with state-of-the-art automation technologies.
Rs 16,000 crore has been allocated for the development of this facility from FY22 to FY27. Of this, Rs 4,500 crore is earmarked exclusively for electric vehicle operations. This investment is a cornerstone of transitioning to sustainable and scalable EV production, setting the stage for the Indian auto market.
Industry 4.0 Integration: Strengthening Manufacturing Precision
Over 1,000 robots operate within the facility, alongside multiple automated transfer systems, enhancing operational efficiency and precision. Advanced features such as an IoT-based “Nerve Center” provide real-time insights into manufacturing processes, ensuring traceability and quality. Integration of Industry 4.0 technologies strengthen its status as a cutting-edge production hub.
Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) and Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) streamline material movement across manufacturing units. These technologies reduce downtime, enhance safety, and optimise workflow, making them essential components of this advanced facility.
Press, Paint, Perfect: Automation in Action
A fully automated press shop and AI-driven body shop are highlights of the manufacturing units. These sections ensure consistent quality and output precision. A robotic paint shop further enhances efficiency by automating paint application processes with minimal waste.
Battery assembly is managed on compact manufacturing lines designed for lean module production. Patented processes, including hidden cell terminal welding and a proprietary pallet design, ensure insulation and geometric accuracy. Multi-layered testing protocols and real-time temperature monitoring maintain battery reliability.
Chakan’s Role in Mahindra’s COP26 Commitments
The facility adheres to stringent safety standards, employing IP67 ingress protection and automated anomaly isolation to mitigate risks. A no-fault-forward strategy ensures defects are identified and rectified promptly, preserving product integrity at every stage.
Sustainability is a core focus, with the plant achieving water-positive status and 100% reliance on renewable energy. This aligns with Mahindra’s commitment to COP26 targets for 2030, underlining the company’s dedication to environmental responsibility.
EV manufacturing in India: Bridging Ambition and Execution in Electric Mobility
The workforce strategy prioritises inclusivity, aiming for a 25% gender diversity ratio. Comprehensive skill development programmes prepare employees for the advanced technologies deployed, fostering expertise and quality in operations.
Mahindra’s Chakan facility represents a significant step in India’s electric mobility journey. Its emphasis on automation, sustainability, and workforce development positions its positive pace and policies, paving the way for future growth and innovation.
