The 150cc-200cc motorcycle segment in India witnessed a sharp decline of 21.97% in December 2024, with total sales dropping to 91,897 units from 1,17,773 units in December 2023. While some motorcycles managed to register positive growth, the overall segment struggled due to shifting consumer preferences and year-end buying trends.

Honda Unicorn emerged as the best-selling motorcycle in this segment with 20,991 units sold in December 2024, marking a 19.80% YoY growth from 17,521 units in December 2023. It was the only motorcycle in the top three to record positive sales growth. TVS Apache, despite retaining its position as the second best-seller, saw a 2.89% decline in YoY sales with 20,885 units sold compared to 21,506 units a year ago. Bajaj Pulsar, which was once the segment leader, suffered a massive 50.73% decline, selling just 20,872 units, down from 42,362 units in December 2023.

Among Yamaha’s popular models, FZ series sales fell by 20.63%, with 8,558 units sold in December 2024 compared to 10,783 units last year. MT 15 sales dropped by 18.43%, reaching 5,224 units from 6,404 units in December 2023. The Yamaha R15 suffered a significant 41.77% drop, selling 4,269 units, down from 7,331 units.

Honda SP 160 stood out with the highest YoY growth in percentage terms, registering a 44.50% increase, with 4,520 units sold in December 2024 compared to 3,128 units a year ago. Hero Xtreme 160R and 200 recorded an even more impressive 213.59% growth, jumping from 736 units in December 2023 to 2,308 units in December 2024.

In the performance-oriented segment, KTM 200 series sales dropped by 43.22%, selling just 1,771 units compared to 3,119 units last year. Hero XPulse 200 sales also declined by 15.84%, reaching 930 units from 1,105 units. The Honda Hornet 2.0, once a strong player, saw a steep decline of 60.30%, selling only 590 units in December 2024 compared to 1,486 units in the same month last year.

Bajaj Avenger series, which caters to the cruiser segment, registered a 28.90% decline, selling 561 units compared to 789 units. Honda CB200X also struggled, posting a 42.83% decline with just 303 units sold. Suzuki Gixxer sales nosedived by 88.63%, dropping to just 96 units compared to 844 units in December 2023. Kawasaki W175 recorded only 19 units, marking an 85.27% decline from 129 units in December 2023.

Overall, the 150cc-200cc motorcycle segment saw a significant downturn, with multiple models facing double-digit YoY declines. The rise in demand for more powerful motorcycles in the 350cc+ segment, along with changing consumer preferences, has contributed to this trend. While some models like Unicorn, SP 160, and Xtreme 160R/200 managed to post positive growth, the majority of bikes in this segment struggled to maintain their numbers.
