All two wheeler automakers in the country have reported sales growth in July 2020 as compared to June 2020
It appears as if the two wheeler segment in India is emerging slowly of the slowdown noted over the past 18 months and the shutdown effect announced in March 2020. Sales across the two wheeler segment may have dropped significantly year-on-year but there is a definite improvement in month-on month sales figures.
Bike makers in the country have released their sales numbers for July 2020 and it can be seen that there is a notable improvement when compared to sales of June 2020. Taking the leading automakers – Hero MotorCorp, Honda 2Wheelers, TVS Motor, Bajaj Auto, Royal Enfield and Suzuki, total sales have crossed the 1.2 million mark in July relating to a 23 percent increase in sales over June 2020 figures.
With the lockdown opening up in parts, there is a headway into company dealership as buyers opt for personal mode of transport over public transport means to help curb the risk of contracting the COVID-19 pandemic which experts state is highly possible in closed and crowded spaces.
Two wheeler Sales July 2020
Hero MotoCorp – Sales of Hero MotoCorp motorcycles and scooters in July 2020 stood at 5,14,509 units. This was a 14 percent increase over sales in June 2020. Taking into account motorcycle sales, the company sold 4,78,666 units in July 2020, down 2.32 percent when compared to 4,90,058 units of July 2019. Out of total sales in July, it was the Hero Splendor and HF Deluxe that amassed over 3 lakh unit sales. Scooter sales stood at 35,843 units, a dip of 21.6 percent as against 45,752 units sold in the same month of the previous year. Exports on the other hand dipped 69.04 percent to 7,563 units in July 2020 down from 24,436 units exported in July 2019.
Honda 2Wheelers – The company noted total sales of 3,21,583 units in July 2020. Sales dipped 29.32 percent when compared to 4,55,000 units sold in July 2019. Domestic sales were up 53 percent to 3,09,332 when compared to sales in June 2020 which stood at 2,02,837 units. Exports increased 52 percent month-on-month to 12,251 units in July 2020 as compared to 8,042 units exported in June 2020.
TVS Motors – Sales of the company increased 27 percent month-on-month to 2,52,744 units in the past month while sales in June 2020 had stood at 1,98,387 units. Comparing sales in July 2020 to that of July 2019, there was a 9.56 percent decline with 2,79,465 units sold in July 2019. Taking into account motorcycle and scooter sales separately, motorcycle sales dipped 1.98 percent to 1,06,062 units in July 2020 as against 1,08,210 units sold in the same month of the previous year. Scooter sales on the other hand noted a more significant decline of 25.28 percent to 78,603 units in the past month as against 1,05,199 units sold in July 2019. In the past month, the TVS Apache was the leading motorcycle in terms of sales while in the scooter segment it was the Jupiter.
Bajaj Auto Limited – Domestic sales of Bajaj Auto dipped 11 percent in July 2020 to 1,54,474 units when compared to sales of 1,70,978 units in July 2019. However, it was a significant increase when compared to 1,46,695 units sold in June 2020. Exports in the past month dipped 43 percent to 86,082 units while total two wheeler sales dipped 26 percent to 2,38,556 units in July 2020 as compared to 3,22,210 units sold in the same month of the previous year. It was found that the Bajaj Platina and CT100 found more buyers in the past month.
Royal Enfield – Domestic sales of Royal Enfield in July 2020 stood at 37,925 units, down 22.9 percent from 49,182 units sold in July 2019 but an increase of 3.9 percent when compared to sales of 36,510 units in June 2020. Total sales in the past month stood at 40,334 units, down 26 percent as against 54,185 units sold in July 2019. Exports dipped 52 percent to 2,409 units in the past month while the company had exported 5,003 units in July 2019. In view of the current pandemic scenario in the country, the company has introduced its ‘Service on Wheels’ platform with a fleet of 800 motorcycles pressed into service. In markets across UK, it was found that the RE Interceptor 650 was the highest selling motorcycle in the mid weight segment.
Suzuki – Domestic sales stood at 31,421 units as against 62,366 units sold in the same month last year. Including exports, cumulative sales were at 34,412 units in July 2020 as against 69,236 units. This is a YoY declined of over 50%.
