Polestar Precept Concept, a Stunning Electric Sedan, Will Go into Production

  • Polestar, the performance-EV brand affiliated with Volvo, has announced it will put the Precept electric vehicle concept into production.
  • The vehicle is loaded with technology and sustainable materials.
  • The Precept will be built in China, and it’ll be available in the United States.

Concept cars meant to showcase an automaker’s evolving design aesthetic make for great auto-show booth fodder. Some of what’s showcased will appear on an SUV or a luxury sedan in a few years, but the design study disappears not long after being hauled around the world to various events. Polestar’s Precept seemed destined for that fate. But it turns out the stunning electric concept car is headed to production.

“The public said, ‘We want it,’ so we decided to build it. Consumers want to see change from this industry, not just dreams,” said CEO Thomas Ingenlath, who is well placed—as former head of Volvo design—to push a design study through to production.

The Precept concept relies heavily on a sense of environmentalism, which Polestar wants to permeate its vehicle lineup. It looks like the production vehicle will continue that, with a mix of sustainable materials for the interior. These include reclaimed fishing nets, recycled cork, and a flax-based composite that will be used both inside and out.

The Precept is also a showcase for technology including a solid-state lidar sensor above the windshield for driver-assist features, which Polestar has placed to highlight it instead of trying to hide it from drivers. The C-pillar houses an LED strip that shares the vehicle’s state of charge, and the camera and sensors on the car are labeled. There’s no word on how much of this will carry over to the production vehicle, however.

While details about timing, price, range, and battery capacity scarce, what Polestar did say is that it will build a new plant to produce it. It will be located somewhere in China, the company’s home market, and is aimed to be carbon neutral. When asked if the Precept will coming over here Ingenlath said, “yes, the US is absolutely in our plans for this car.”
