Electric-Car Bargains Under $10,000: Window Shop with Car and Driver

Intrigued by the low, low prices of used 21st-century electric cars, we decided to search for EVs on a $10,000 budget. While we couldn’t find any Teslas for that outlay, 10 grand is enough money to buy a number of electrics, such as the Nissan Leaf, Smart Fortwo Electric Drive, and Mitsubishi iMiEV. Provided you can live with less than 100 miles of range, these battery-powered cars seem like bargains.

Having recently purchased a used 2017 Nissan Leaf, assistant photographer and videographer Brad Fick shares what it’s like to live with a EV, how he tries to maximize range, and the ridiculous amount of time he spends looking for a place to charge the battery.

While a few of us took the task seriously and found usable EV bargains, others decided to spend their imaginary money on electric cars without batteries and homemade EV conversions. A Ford Ranger EV with an updated battery pack makes an appearance, but the most interesting thing about it is the special gauge package that Ford designed for it. We’ll assume that senior editor Ezra Dyer’s choice of a Cadillac ELR plug-in—a car that exceeded the budget and is a hybrid—was done to create controversy, or perhaps he didn’t actually read the challenge. But we do marvel at the ELR’s design and are genuinely shocked at how much it has depreciated from its original $75,995 base price.
