Airstream Lineup Expands with Larger Basecamp Trailers

  • Stylish RV maker Airstream is rounding out its lineup of overlanding Basecamp trailer models with new 20-foot floor plans.
  • The Basecamp 20 starts at $45,900 and comes with a larger bed, more storage compartments, a dedicated furnace, and a tankless water heater, among other features.
  • Upgrading to the $48,900 Basecamp 20X improves the trailer’s off-road capability with extra ground clearance and aggressive off-road Goodyear tires.

With all the talk of off-road SUVs this week, Airstream’s announcement of the expansion of its lineup of Basecamp camping trailers could make anybody start planning future overlanding adventures. In addition to the 16-foot existing model, these two new 20-foot floor plans provide more space for people and storage.

The Basecamp 20 offers a larger rear-mounted bed to make it easier to take friends or family along on adventures. At the front of the 20-foot models, a four-seat dinette allows for easier in-trailer dining. There’s also an optional tent that attaches to the outside of the trailer so you can bring along more people—or have more space to yourself.

For those going on the most adventurous outings, the 20X model may be worth the upgrade. With the same space and amenities as the Basecamp 20, it also offers 12 inches of ground clearance, aggressive off-road Goodyear tires, larger wheels, stainless steel front stone guards, and tinted window guards.

Although they’re set up for off-the-grid camping, they still allow for a few creature comforts: Basecamp trailers can all be configured with a solar array to keep the fridge or other appliances operational while in the wilderness. A 4.3-cubic-foot fridge is standard on the 20 and 20X models, and Airstream offers both a microwave and an air conditioner as options.

The Basecamp 20 weighs around 3400 pounds and carries a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 4300 pounds, while the 20X starts at a 3500-pound base weight with the same GVWR. This is within the limits of towing capacity for several off-road-capable SUVs and pickup trucks, including the just-introduced 2021 Ford Bronco, the Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator, and Toyota’s 4Runner SUV and Tacoma pickup.

Priced from $45,900 to $48,900, the two new Basecamp models are available for order now, with deliveries set to happen later this summer.
