2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500SE Has 800+ HP, Only 100 Will Be Built

  • Shelby American has unveiled its upgraded 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Signature Edition, and only 100 will be built.
  • The supercharged 5.2-liter V-8 produces more than 800 horsepower thanks to a smaller supercharger pulley and upgraded cooling.
  • The upgrades cost an additional $29,995 on top of the GT500’s $71,495 starting price.

The 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is the most powerful production Ford to date, but for some power-hungry crazies, 760 horsepower might not be enough. Good thing Shelby American exists, because it’s building 100 upgraded GT500s with more than 800 horsepower. Disclaimer: we certainly didn’t ask for this, but we’re all for it.

To squeeze an additional 40-plus horsepower from the GT500’s supercharged 5.2-liter V-8, Shelby American equipped a smaller supercharger pulley and an uprated heat exchanger and intercooler, and it runs on 93-octane pump gas. During Car and Driver testing, a stock 2020 GT500 launched to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds on its way to a 11.4-second quarter-mile at 132 mph, making it one of the quickest muscle cars we’ve ever tested.

The GT500SE sits a bit lower than the standard car, with new front and rear springs and anti-roll bars. Stronger axle shafts are equipped to handle the additional power. Adding to the GT500’s already menacing look is a new vented carbon-fiber hood that’s 30 pounds lighter than the original. A Shelby widebody kit and carbon-fiber package are both available. The car sits on 20-inch forged aluminum wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires, though sticky Cup 2 tires are optional.

Inside, the seats have been recovered with Carroll Shelby’s signature stitched into the seatbacks. Remember, only 100 of these 800-plus-hp Mustangs will be built for each model year, and to make sure you know which one you have, Shelby includes both engine and dashboard plaques with the car’s serial number.
