- We spied the upcoming Audi e-tron GT electric sports sedan, which has a claimed 249-mile range, testing in the Arctic Circle.
- The e-tron GT is powered by two electric motors that produce 590 horsepower, and will send the electric Audi sedan to 60 mph in a claimed 3.5 seconds.
- It’s expected to arrive later this year with a starting price around $100,000.
At the end of 2018, we got the chance to drive a concept version of Audi’s upcoming e-tron GT electric sports sedan. It was low, sleek, and minimalistic, and the little acceleration we got to experience—we were limited to 45 mph—reminded us of everything from the Chevy Bolt EV to the Tesla Model S. But back then, the electric Audi was still a long way from reality. It’s getting closer, though, because we have spied it testing in the Arctic Circle.
The e-tron GT was co-developed alongside the Porsche Taycan, which, in its top Turbo S form, launched to 60 mph in just 2.4 seconds, making it the third-quickest car we’ve ever tested. The electric Audi, however, is much slower and is claimed to reach that same speed in 3.5 seconds. The e-tron could beat the top-dog Taycan in the battle for range, though. During our test, the Taycan Turbo S traveled 209 miles on a single charge, while the e-tron GT is claimed to have 249 miles of range.
The e-tron GT will be powered by two electric motors that together make 590 horsepower in conjunction with Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system. A complex cooling system will allow the battery pack to hit repeated runs without compromising acceleration. The e-tron GT has an 800-volt charging system that will support wireless charging and can recharge around 80 percent of the battery in about 20 minutes.
Passersby drooled over the e-tron GT concept when C/D drove it through downtown Los Angeles, and these camouflaged test cars have almost the same low and sleek profile as the concept. Whether or not the production car will have the same jagged lines as the concept is unknown, but if it’s anything like the e-tron SUV, it will.
The e-tron GT is expected to arrive later this year, and we expect to see them at dealerships in early 2021. It’ll join the existing e-tron and e-tron Sportback SUVs as well as the upcoming Q4 e-tron crossover in Audi’s electric lineup. Pricing is also unknown, but will likely start around $100,000.
