1960s-Era Fiat 500 Lives Again in Lego Creator Expert Kit

  • Lego adds to its growing lineup of realistic automotive Creator Expert kits with a new icon: the Fiat 500.
  • Modeled after the 500F, which was produced from 1965 to 1973, the kit consists of 960 individual Lego brick pieces and is nine inches long when completed.
  • The model features a working convertible top, a luggage rack with suitcase, and a detailed interior and engine bay.

Danish toymaker Lego is launching the next automotive icon in its Creator Expert series of kits, drawing inspiration from the Fiat 500F of the late 1960s and early 1970s. The Italian minicar’s vintage appeal is bolstered by the model’s detailed interior, working convertible top, and decorative luggage rack complete with a suitcase covered in travel stickers.

The little yellow Fiat consists of 960 individual pieces, and its doors, hood, and tailgate all open to reveal even more details. Under the rear tailgate you’ll find a tiny replica of the 500’s two-cylinder engine, and up front under the hood are a gas tank and a spare tire.

The Italian look and feel is helped by the kit’s instructions, which Lego says are inspired by the real car’s original promotional materials. Lego has also re-created some of the Fiat 500’s original advertisements, only they show the blocky Lego model instead of the original car. The kit also includes a painting of the car in front of Rome’s famous Colosseum.

The Creator Expert series includes sets modeled after the Taj Mahal and the Apollo 11 Lunar Lander, but we’re far more interested in the automotive icons that have been highlighted in past sets, including James Bond’s Aston Martin DB5, the Ford Mustang, the Volkswagen Beetle, and the Volkswagen camper van.

The Fiat 500 Creator Expert kit goes on sale at Lego stores and online on Lego’s retail website on March 1, priced at $89.99.
