Ending several long-standing speculations regarding its quarter-litre motorcycle, Bajaj has officially confirmed launch of Dominar 250
The company has sent invites for the unveil on March 20 and launch could be scheduled soon after that. It may be recalled that Bajaj has been testing this bike for quite some time. However, in most such instances, the bike was either mistaken for BS6 Dominar 400 or a new 200 cc variant of Dominar.
While it was expected that Bajaj would enter the quarter-litre segment, there was no certainly about the product. Earlier, there were talks that Pulsar range could get a bigger sibling in the form of a 250 cc variant. But it’s now confirmed that Bajaj will be expanding the Dominar family. The move may seem counter-intuitive, but the company may have its reasons for its decisions.
Bajaj Dominar 250 BS6
The Pulsar range getting a 250 cc variant would seem like a better option, as it’s one of the bestselling products in Bajaj’s portfolio. In comparison, Dominar is still struggling to meet sales targets, even though the company had started out with great expectations for its flagship motorcycle. In January 2020, only 130 units of Dominar were sold in the domestic market. Exports stood at 1,408 units. In view of these facts, betting on Dominar seems risky at this point of time. It would be interesting to see how the new 250 cc variant fares in the market.
BS6 Bajaj Dominar 250 will borrow most of its design characteristics from Dominar 400. For its engine and other cycle parts, Dominar 250 will rely on KTM 250 Duke. The bike will be using the 249 cc single-cylinder, fuel-injected engine that churns out 30 bhp of max power and 24 Nm of max torque on KTM 250 Duke. This engine also does duty on Husqvarna twins. However, on Dominar 250, the engine is expected to be offered in a detuned state, capable of delivering 28 bhp and 24 Nm.
As compared to Dominar 400, the new 250 cc bike is expected to lose some of the premium hardware. For example, the cast swingarm is likely to be replaced with a box-section swingarm. Dominar 250 could also be using smaller disc brakes to keep costs in check. Spy shots of the Dominar 250 confirmed that it will get similar USD forks in the front, as that of the Dominar 400.
BS6 Dominar 250 is expected to be priced at around Rs 1.50 lakh. This is close to Dominar 400’s original launch price of Rs 1.36 lakh in 2016. Dominar 400 has undergone multiple price revisions and it now retails at Rs 1.90 lakh. As Dominar 400 has lost its price advantage, there may be hopes that the new bike Dominar 250 can fill in that gap. Whether or not the strategy succeeds will become clear in the coming months.
