Volvo S90 and V90 Will Get Slightly More Beautiful for 2021

  • Volvo is refreshing the S90 sedan and V90 wagon with a tweaked look and a few new features.
  • In Europe, both models get 48-volt hybrid powertrains as standard, but we don’t think these will come to the U.S.
  • Look for more U.S.-specific information on the 2021 Volvo 90-series lineup to come this summer.

We think Volvo’s S90 and V90 are among the more attractive luxury cars on the market, and they’re getting a bit sleeker for 2021. The sedan, wagon, and Cross Country wagon models all get a slightly more modern look, along with a few additional features and trim choices. U.S. details on the 2021 S90 and V90 aren’t available yet, but Volvo says the updated models will be coming to our shores in summer 2020.

The visual changes are admittedly slight, and include different fog lights, a reshaped front bumper, and a new taillight design for the V90 wagon models. There are also new wheel designs and newly available colors inside and out. A wool interior upholstery option is newly available, although we won’t count on it being available in America.

In Europe, all S90s and V90s will now come standard with a 48-volt hybrid system, but given that Volvo declined to bring this powertrain to the U.S. for the refreshed XC90 SUV, we don’t think it will make it here for these sedans and wagons, either. That means they’ll likely continue on with the T5, T6, and T8 powertrain options that use a 2.0-liter four-cylinder in combination with various turbochargers, superchargers, and electric motors in increasing levels of power.

There’s also an upgraded Bowers & Wilkins sound system on hand, and an air filter with a particle sensor that claims to improve cabin air quality. USB-C charging ports replace 12-volt outlets for the rear seat, and wireless smartphone charging is now available.

At this point, Volvo has only confirmed to C/D that the updated S90 and V90 will be coming to the U.S., but more details for our market are coming over the summer.
