BMW’s flagship sedan is going electric, as the company has confirmed that the next-generation 7-series will offer an EV version. The battery-powered 7er will be sold alongside gasoline, diesel, and plug-in-hybrid versions. BMW has yet to provide any technical specs on the electric 7-series’ but says it will use the company’s “fifth-generation electric drivetrain.”

This move isn’t too surprising considering that several of the 7-series’ competitors are also making the move to electric power. The next Jaguar XJ is expected to be electric, while Mercedes-Benz’s S-class sedan will soon spawn an electric version called EQS.
The current 7-series, codenamed G11, has been on sale in the U.S. since the 2016 model year. It received a refresh for 2020—which brought a polarizing increase in grille size (pictured above)—signifying that it still has a few model years left before the next-gen model arrives. We expect to see the new version in 2022, with the electric variant possibly launching in 2023.
