Yezdi Production, Sales To Continue Despite Ban – Company To File Appeal

While Karnataka High Court has banned Classic Legends from using Yezdi name, the company is seeking legal advice and will file an appeal shortlyYezdi Motorcycle Ban Update. Image – JAY CHOUDHARYAt a time when Yezdi was just starting to gain traction, a court ruling has barred Classic Legends from using the ‘Yezdi’ trademark. In its order, the court said that the Yezdi trademark name remains the property of the official liquidator (OL) of Ideal Jawa. The case to ban the use of Yezdi trademark was filed by Ideal Jawa Employees Association. These developments are a setback for Classic Legends, which has been tasked to resurrect legendary motorcycle brands. After Jawa debuted in 2018, the company had launched Yezdi motorcycles in January 2022. It currently has three bikes – Yezdi Roadster, Scrambler and Adventure.End of Yezdi? While enthusiasts may be a bit disappointed with legal developments, Classic Legends has assured that production and sales will continue. It will be “subject to order of the Appellate Court”. The company will be challenging the court order and is hopeful of getting a favourable resolution. The case is a bit complicated, as it dates back to 1960 when Ideal Jawa (India) came into existence. Registration of Yezdi trademark was received in 1969. While Yezdi enjoyed its glorious days with a significant fan following, the company eventually started facing existential issues in the 1980s. As a result, the company decided to wind up operations in 1991. As part of the winding up process, an Official Liquidator was appointed in 2001.Yezdi Motorcycle Ban Update. Image – Jay ChoudharyAs the company did not pay the necessary fee to renew the Yezdi trademark, it lapsed and was removed by the Trademark Registry. In parallel, other developments were taking place such as launch of Yezdi website in 1998. Later in 2013 and 2014, the Yezdi trademark was registered in trademark offices in Mumbai, Delhi and Ahmedabad. All these registrations were done by Mr. Boman Irani, who is the claimant of Yezdi trademark in this case.Apparently, no one bothered to file a case at that time since Yezdi trademark had hardly any financial value associated with it in 2013. No one would have thought that Yezdi brand would be revived and gain popularity once again. Now that Yezdi brand has decent financial worth, its ownership is being claimed by two parties. What happens next?As per current court ruling, Ideal Jawa Employees Association stands to gain significantly. The court has ordered that Boman Irani and Classic Legends should pay the company for all the gains made via the use of Yezdi trademark. The Official Liquidator of Ideal Jawa has been directed to appoint a Chartered Accountant firm that can provide an estimate of the overall gains made by Mr. Irani and Classic Legends from use of Yezdi trademark. Both Mr. Irani and Classic Legends have also been directed to pay Rs 10 lakh each to the Official Liquidator. The funds will be utilized for the winding up operations of Ideal Jawa. Classic Legends will be challenging the court order, as per legal recourse suggested by their lawyers. Meanwhile, Yezdi sales and production will continue, dependant on orders of the Appellate Court. It is possible that the matter may be resolved via an out-of-court settlement, as no one will benefit in case of a prolonged legal battle. More

Chevy Corvette E-Ray Sure Looks Ready for Winter

We have seen quite a lot of the upcoming Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray this past month, including what looked like a completely undisguised prototype just last week. While we do not yet have a reveal date for the actual car, and with it any specific information about its hybrid components, we do know that the version we have seen in a recent configurator leak should bear the E-Ray name and a wide body familiar to anyone who has seen the C8 Z06. We do not know where exactly the electric power is being sent just yet, but the latest leaked video gives some hope that, as we heard all the way back in 2020, the power may be going to the front wheels. We’ve Been Talking about This for a WhileThe video, uploaded by Corvette Nut on YouTube with the conspicuous title “°•“°☆°•~♤°|♧°•`~°■•,” looks a lot like a leak of an official GM clip. It features a “professional driver, closed course” caption in fine print at the bottom and ends with a Corvette logo, but Corvette Blogger notes that this is actually the older C7-generation variant of the logo. Whether or not the clip is official, the important thing is what it shows: a wide-bodied, camouflaged Corvette drifting through light snow.Does this mean the E-Ray will be getting that rumored all-wheel drive? If you were hoping to show the winter prowess of an all-wheel-drive Corvette, there would be no better way to do it. We still have to wait to see the final car for any real answers, but the sheer number of new looks at the car this week seem to indicate that a finished product could be imminent. Hyundai SEVEN concept (production name – Ioniq 7) is underpinned by the same E-GMP platform like Kia EV9 conceptKia EV9 Electric SUV Teased For IndiaMost cars falling under Hyundai’s umbrella, have vertical integration across their sub-brands. We have seen this in India as well with Creta-Seltos and Venue-Sonet. In global markets, Hyundai takes this platform sharing a notch above by bringing its luxury brand Genesis to the mix as well. The same concept sticks with Kia and Hyundai’s concept vehicles. If there is a Hyundai concept, it will likely spawn a Kia as well. There will be major differences in styling, though. Same is true with Hyundai SEVEN concept and Kia EV 9 concept. Speaking of, Kia EV 9 concept is now teased for India and will be showcased at 2023 Auto Expo taking place in Greater Noida next month.Kia EV9 Electric SUV TeasedAt Kia Motors pavilion at 2023 Auto Expo, there will be a lot going on. Hyundai’s counterpart of this concept is Ioniq 7 which takes a swoopy approach to its concept. Kia EV9 concept looks like a buff version of Kia Soul EV on steroids.Test mules of production-spec version Kia EV9 have been spotted in South Korea before. Most of the boxiness and butch appeal is carried over to the production-spec model. We saw a glimpse of this large barge of an SUV at LA Auto Show 2021. Yezdi Trademark Under Liquidator’s Realm and not with Classic Legends – Karnataka HC

Karnataka high Court has restrained Classic Legends to stop usage of Yezdi trademark as Ideal Jawa owns itNew Yezdi Roadking Render – For Reference OnlyIdeal Jawa Pvt Ltd, one of Karnataka’s jewels and was an icon when Indian motorcycling history is considered. Yezdi is derived from the Czech word. Jezdi.Since inception, Yezdi trademark has been Ideal Jawa’s property and was resurrected by Mahindra’s subsidiary, Classic Legends after absence of over 2 decades. There are three models to choose from, Scrambler, Roadster and Adventure. In November 2022, the company registered growth in sales.Yezdi Trademark TussleThe court holds Boman Irani and Classic Legends liable to account and pay Ideal Jawa. This includes payment to Ideal Jawa for all gains accrued for using the Jawa trademark. They needs to provide all details of sales and earnings to the OL for all usage of ‘Yezdi’. The OL has been instructed to appoint a CA firm of repute to determine benefits accrued from use of Yezdi trademark. And once the trademarks are properly valued, OL is allowed to sell all trademarks, and associated rights and goodwill through auction at proper valuation. Additionally, Classic Legends and Boman Irani are fined Rs. 10 lakhs.Yezdi LineupWhen Ideal Jawa went defunct in 1996, all assets of the company including Yezdi trademark, fell into the domain of Liquidator’s office. In that state, Yezdi trademark couldn’t have been procured by anyone unless all dues of Ideal Jawa are fully cleared. Until then, Yezdi trademark is solely under the realm of Liquidator’s office.Ideal Jawa Employees Association took this to court. Karnataka High Court has now declared that all trademark registration certificates issued by registrar of trademarks of Delhi, Ahmedabad and Mumbai as null and void to Boman Irani as done in bad faith. It is now directed by court to revert the trademark back to to Ideal Jawa through Official Liquidator, as they had never abandoned the trademark to begin with.OutcomeIdeal Jawa Employee Association had filed an application to registrar of trademarks against the trademark registrations of Yezdi to Classic Legends. The Association urged to raise funds from Ideal Jawa assets (Yezdi trademark) to settle creditor dues that stood tall for decades, including employee payments. The order is in abeyance for a period of a month. This so aggrieved parties can challenge it before the appellate forum.Classic Legends response – “The order is held in abeyance and the company is seeking legal advice on the matter. The company will be filing an appeal against the order shortly and is optimistic of securing favourable relief. In the interim, manufacturing and sale of motorcycles will continue, subject to orders of the Appellate Court.” More

Kinetic Luna Electric Launch Soon – Chassis Production Starts

Primary target should be B2B companies for the 2023 Kinetic Luna in an electric guise with around 70 km of rangeImage – Slimline Customs, For Reference OnlyRemember the Luna moped? A 50cc moped that was extremely popular once? Rings a bell, doesn’t it? In fact, it was so popular that people started calling every other moped, a Luna. Like every scooter is a scooty in India or every ladder frame car is a Jeep or every Royal Enfield is a Bullet and every photocopying machine is Xerox.Such was the pull of Luna back in the day. It was manufactured by Kinetic Group in India with a 50cc engine. It was frugal, practical and aided a lot of small families and business owners alike. There was a time when Luna would sell around 2,000 units a day, making it the most popular Moped in India with prices starting at Rs. 2,000 back in the day.2023 Kinetic Luna ElectricIt was in production since 1972 and after 50 years of its inception, Kinetic Group has announced a revival of this iconic moped legend with a twist. The twist is that it will only be offered in an EV guise. It won’t be priced at just Rs. 2000, though. Let’s take a look.Fast forward to December 2022, there is a monopoly in moped market by TVS right now. With XL100 being the only ICE moped in the country, it sells around 30K to 40K units per month. Kinetic Group is not planning to revive Luna as is with its 50cc engine. Instead, Luna is set to be an electric vehicle.2023 Kinetic Luna Electric – E Luna chassis production startsThere are a lot of electric scooters springing up regularly that are solely targeted at the B2B sector. Even Honda is in the line to launch EVs for the B2B sector. A recent patent of an electric moped has surfaced and Benly-e test mules are getting prevalent as well. The time is now for Kinetic Group to revive its iconic Luna moped in India.2023 Luna Moped will be manufactured by Kinetic Green Energy & Power Solutions, a sister brand of Kinetic Group. Kinetic Engineering Limited has even commenced production of chassis and subassemblies as well. Kinetic is setting a separate assembly line for Luna electric at a production capacity of 5K units per month. As per the announcement, it will likely be called E-Luna upon launch.Kinetic E-Luna – What To Expect? For 2023 Luna electric, Kinetic seems to be betting big. The company has installed 30 new welding machines in its new assembly line, and is kept exclusive for upcoming Luna. Even the paint shop and fabrication shops have been upgraded at the company’s manufacturing plant in Ahmednagar.Technical specs are not yet known. That said, Kinetic is sure to play the affordability card and design the product accordingly. This should definitely appeal to the target audience. A relatively small and purposeful moped with a range of around 70 km should suffice for intended use. More details will be revealed further down the line. Kinetic E-Luna launch price expected to be under Rs 50,000. More
