Toyota Recalls 2.9 Million Vehicles in U.S. over Airbag Inflator

  • Toyota has issued a recall for nearly 2.9 million vehicles in the U.S., including the 2011–2019 Corolla, 2011–2013 Matrix hatchbacks, 2012–2018 Avalon, and 2013–2018 Avalon hybrid sedans.
  • The recall is due to the failure of the airbag control unit to interpret a crash in certain situations and thus not deploying the airbags and tightening the seatbelt.
  • The recall is a part of a larger probe which the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) began in April of last year.

Toyota has issued a recall for nearly 2.9 million of its vehicles in the U.S.—and an additional 500,000 abroad—due to an airbag control unit that could fail to deploy the airbags and tighten seatbelts in a crash. The deployment failure results if the unit doesn’t receive or incorrectly interprets signals from the crash sensors.

Toyota says that it believes the factors that create this situation in a crash are rare but that it can be generated in severe crashes, including an underride frontal crash (in which the vehicle’s front end goes under the vehicle it hits). The affected models include the 2011–2019 Corolla, 2011–2013 Matrix hatchbacks, 2012–2018 Avalon, and 2013–2018 Avalon hybrid sedans. Toyota has listed a total number of vehicles “potentially involved” but says it is unable to estimate the exact number of affected vehicles. The largest number—2,576,108 of a total 2,891,976—are Toyota Corollas.

The airbag control units impacted by the recall were manufactured by TRW Automotive Holdings, which is now owned by ZF Friedrichshafen. This recall is a part of a much larger probe that started in April as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) looked into potentially 12.3 million defective airbag control units. Other manufacturers with these control units include Fiat Chrysler, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, and Mitsubishi; Kia, Hyundai, Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep have already issued recalls for the control unit.
