- Mercedes-Benz has shared an image of its electric EQS luxury sedan wrapped in camouflage.
- Mercedes will build the EQS and its batteries at the same carbon-neutral plant as the upcoming S-class in Sindelfingen, Germany, which opens in September.
- While the S-class goes into production late in 2020, a start of production hasn’t been announced yet for the EQS.
During an “executive update” live stream, Mercedes-Benz dropped not only news and an image of the upcoming S-class but also a picture of the camouflage-covered EQS luxury sedan. It’s clearly not as wild at the Vision EQS concept vehicle. But even under a barrage of black-and-white squiggles, the vehicle clearly has a more dynamic design aesthetic than the S-class, including protruding taillights and vortex-generating bumps across the trunk to improve aerodynamics.
In addition to teasing how the EQS might look, Mercedes also announced that the vehicle will be equipped with partially carbon-neutral battery cells. This is part of the automaker’s Ambition2039 goal to make its factories and supply chain completely carbon neutral. Mercedes is currently on track to make its own world-wide factories carbon-neutral as early as 2022.
The EQS and S-class will both be built in the company’s latest facility, Factory 56 in Sindelfingen, Germany, which has been built from the ground up as carbon neutral. That factory will open in September and will begin producing S-class sedans by the end of 2020.
There’s no word when the EQS will start production, but Mercedes said in a statement: “The EQS, which will be the fully electric member of the next S-class family, will eventually be produced there.”
