- Lamborghini has recalled 26 Aventador SVJ supercars to fix interior door handles that could become inoperable over time.
- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall notice blames a poorly trained factory worker and says the defect could result in owners getting trapped in their cars.
- Only 900 Aventador SVJs will be built, and they are powered by a 759-hp 6.5-liter V-12.
The Lamborghini Aventador SVJ—the Aventador’s hard-core, track-focused variant—currently holds the lap record for fastest production car at the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife, the benchmark for the pinnacle of automotive performance. Some SVJs could have some issues, though, as Lamborghini has issued a recall for 26 of these $500,000-plus V-12–powered supercars.
Lamborghini says that the SVJ’s door handles, which are actually vinyl straps for weight savings, could fail over time, making the door not be able to be unlocked from the inside, trapping the occupants inside the cabin. The Italian automaker blamed a “non properly trained” employee who did not properly engage the cable pin inside the door handles.
The Lamborghini Aventador SVJ is not a car you’d want to be trapped inside. Because it’s a track-focused car, it’s equipped with carbon-fiber bucket seats that are meant to hold you in place when tearing up apexes. What we’re saying is: These aren’t seats you’d want to spend hours in.
Only 900 Aventador SVJs will be built, meaning that the new guy’s misadventure has affected 3 percent of the best V-12 Lambos you can buy today. Lamborghini will reach out to customers whose cars were built between December 2019 and January 2020, and dealers will replace the internal door handle.
