2021 Toyota Prius Marks 20 Years in the U.S. with Special Edition

  • The 2021 model year marks 20 years since the Toyota Prius first hit the scene in the U.S. for 2001.
  • Toyota is adding a special-edition version of the Prius to celebrate the anniversary called the Prius 2020 Edition.
  • 2020 units of this special edition will be produced, and pricing should be similar to the current XLE FWD model which starts at $29,330.

Many hybrids have come and gone since the Toyota Prius first arrived in the U.S. for the 2001 model year, but Toyota’s original hybrid remains—and it’s celebrating a birthday this year. Toyota is marking 20 years of selling the Prius on our shores with a special-edition version for the 2021 model year, confusingly dubbed the 2020 Edition.

This model is essentially an appearance package for the 2021 Prius’s XLE FWD trim level (the AWD Prius isn’t available in this special-edition model) and comes in either the Supersonic Red paint pictured here or a white hue called Wind Chill Pearl. It features black trim for the wheels, badges, mirrors, B-pillars, and several interior components, as well as darkened headlight trim and a body-color rear spoiler. The key fob and floor mats get “2020 Edition” insignias.

All 2021 Prius models also add a few new features, including an upgraded suite of driver-assistance systems that now includes capabilities such as pedestrian and bicyclist detection and automatic high beams. Android Auto is now standard across the board, except for in the top Limited trim which has a larger vertically oriented 11.6-inch touchscreen display that’s apparently not yet capable with the Android smartphone-mirroring software.

Toyota has yet to release pricing for the 2021 Prius, but it should represent just a small uptick from the 2020 Prius, which starts at $25,280. 2020 units of the 2020 Edition model will be produced in total and it should go on sale later this year.
