Ampere Electric teases new scooter ahead of launch on June 15

EV brand Ampere Electric Vehicles, under Indian engineering company Greaves Cotton Limited, has teased a new e-scooter ahead of its launch on June 15. As India entered its fourth stage of COVID-19 lockdown protocols in early May, automotive facilities in green and orange zones were allowed to function in a safe environment.

At the moment, Ampere Electric has five e-scooters in its portfolio: Reo-Elite, Magnus, Reo, V48 and Zeal. The first two come with lead-acid battery packs while the following two can be bought with a lithium-ion unit as well. On the other hand, the Ampere Zeal comes only in a lithium-ion format and is classified as a High-Speed model.

The remaining four are generally categorised as Low-Speed models since they can’t cross 25km/h. This downgrade indirectly benefits by not requiring a rider’s licence or registration to operate. Anyone from any age group can ride them.

Coming to the new Ampere product, the teasers suggest that it could be a high-speed model; possibility sitting above the Zeal. It has a digital instrument console (possibly a non-coloured LCD unit), telescopic front forks and a form of CBS (Combi Braking System).

To give a comparison, the current range-topping Ampere Zeal is equipped with a 1.2kW BLDC motor coupled to a portable/swappable 1.8kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The powertrain promises a range of around 75km on a full charge. It takes about six hours to fully charge the battery from empty.

Prices of the entry-level Ampere Reo Elite start at roughly Rs 43,000 ex-showroom. It gets a 0.25kW motor and 0.96kWh lead-acid battery pack. It is on the heavier side at 86kg (18kg more than its lithium-ion variant) and has a top speed limited to 25km/h. The electric scooter takes 8-10 hours to completely charge its battery system from empty and promises a range figure between 50-65km.

Ampere’s new electric scooter gets CBS

In April 2020, Ampere Electric had introduced a new ‘book online now and pay later’ scheme for front-end individuals in the fight against COVID-19. Under the initiative, eligible customers were able to book an Ampere product online at a nominal fee while the remaining amount could be paid at the time of taking delivery, after easing the lockdown.
