Tina Turner Was a Rock Icon Who Loved Cars – Watch Her 1990s Ads

Rock and Roll icon Tina Turner died yesterday at her home in Switzerland at age 83, but the legacy she leaves behind is bigger than her epic music career. She was an auto enthusiast too, owning and loving cars throughout her life. Turner famously owned a Jaguar XJ6 and an XK-E, the latter gifted to her by her ex-husband and musical collaborator Ike Turner. The XK-E, pictured below, wore a “1 Tina” license plate and became a point of contention during the couple’s divorce in 1978. This content is imported from twitter. Oh, and two Jaguars—cars that had been given to me personally.”Following the divorce, Turner reinvented herself and her career out of necessity. In 1984, her album Private Dancer was released and became a huge commercial success, selling 10 million copies globally. Turner became a regular name on the pop music charts with songs like “What’s Love Got to Do With It,” “Better Be Good to Me,” and “Private Dancer.”With her star on the rise and three new Grammy awards in her trophy case, Turner starred alongside Mel Gibson in the third installment of the post-apocalyptic Mad Max film series, Mad Max beyond Thunderdome. She recorded two new songs for the film, one of which netted her a fourth solo Grammy award. She would ultimately win eight over the course of her career, with one early in her career shared with Ike for their hit song “Proud Mary.”As her musical and film success pushed her star ever higher, Plymouth tapped Turner for a series of television commercials for its lineup of cars, including the Acclaim sedan and the Laser sports coupe, a car that won a 10Best award from Car and Driver in 1989. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site. While not exactly Jaguars, Turner’s love for the cars and her on-camera joie de vivre made for some compelling marketing for Plymouth. Her automotive enthusiasm is something we’re glad she shared too, even though she’ll be remembered mostly for her contributions to the entertainment industry.”It may sound silly, but one of my favorite escapes, and a secret pleasure, was driving my Jaguar,” she wrote in her autobiography. It doesn’t sound silly to us at all. New Harley Davidson X440 Debuts – Made in India by Hero MotoCorp

New Harley Davidson X440Looking at some of the images, it seems that Harley-Davidson X 440 has stupendous lean angles, which could translate to a sporty characterHero and Harley-Davidson partnership has unveiled their first new motorcycle – the X440. It will take on the Royal Enfield motorcycles upon launch. In typical American fashion, this affordable Harley-Davidson Roadster comes with a larger engine than Royal Enfield. Going by past Harley offerings, the 440 in X440 will be its displacement. It is a single-cylinder unit with oil-cooling setup and fins for air-cooling. Even though Hero MotoCorp manufactures it in India, Harley-Davidson likely designed the X440. Launch is still distant, but a starting price of Rs. 2.5 lakh (ex-sh) for a barebones model and Rs. 3 lakh for all the bells and whistles is possible.New Harley Davidson X440 DebutsWe see a lot of inspiration from Harley’s Nightster in its muscular fuel tank, round headlight, round speedo on top of its headlight, wide handlebars and minimal body panels. Headlight gets ring-like LED projectors with a horizontal pill-shaped element above them, reading Harley-Davidson.Circular turn indicators have a Harley-Davidson logo in them, a nice attention to detail. At the rear, there is a pill-shaped LED tail light. The circular instrument cluster seems to be a negative LCD unit. But we hope it is a TFT unit with Bluetooth connectivity enabling navigation, calls and notifications.New Harley Davidson X440From a lot of angles, this affordable Harley-Davidson looks like a smaller Iron 883. This might literally be true where the engine is concerned. Hero MotoCorp might use this new powertrain on their upcoming Xpulse as well.Powertrain & ComponentryMade by Hero MotoCorp in India, Harley Davidson X440 is powered by an air/oil-cooled single-cylinder unit with a single exhaust. We expect it to have a 4V head and make around 30 bhp and much higher torque (around 40 Nm), spread primarily in the mid-range. A 6-speed gearbox is very likely. Rear sprocket gets a chain drive, over a belt drive. Refinement could slightly take a hit.Componentry include USD front forks, single disc setup at both ends with dual-channel ABS and equipment by Bybre, twin shock absorbers at the rear, neutral footpegs, alloy wheels, 17″ rear and 18″ front alloy wheels. All this is mounted on a tubular trellis frame. A single stepped seat, blackened engine bay, blackened exhaust are notable elements.New Harley Davidson X440Foot peg positioning looks pretty neutral and slightly higher set. This should enable impressive (from Harley’s standards) lean angles. Street Rod 750 with 210 mm ground clearance is revered as the sportiest Harley. Maybe X 440 can match it.Launch & PricingGiven the larger displacement and Harley-Davidson badge, we expect it to be priced at around Rs. 50K to 80K more premium than Royal Enfield’s 350cc portfolio. That is not a bad proposition, considering Royal Enfield doesn’t pose the same novelty factor as it used to before with large volumes already on road.New Harley Davidson X440A base variant costing around Rs. 2.5 lakh and a top-spec variant costing around Rs. 3 lakh is a good proposition for Harley-Davidson X 440. Hero MotoCorp will be its official distributor in India. Harley-Davidson X440 is different than X350 and X500 motorcycles launched in China recently. Those are based on QJ motorcycles and are China-specific. More

2023 Royal Enfield Meteor 350 Spied Testing – Gets LED Headlight

2023 Royal Enfield Meteor 350Meteor 350 could become the first 350cc motorcycle from Royal Enfield to feature an LED headlight setupRoyal Enfield rules the 350cc motorcycle segment. In April 2023, their sales in the 350cc segment were over 62k units. Despite having a market share of over 90% in the segment, Royal Enfield continues to be focused on updating their 350cc motorcycles. In comes MY2023 RE Meteor 350, spied testing for the first time. This particular test mule is based on top-spec Supernova trim, but features wire-spoke rims, a silver-finished engine bay and for the first time in Royal Enfield’s 350cc portfolio, an LED headlight. Let’s take a look at everything new.MY2023 RE Meteor 350 Spotted TestingWith this MY2023 update, Royal Enfield is aiming at adding a few more features to the Meteor 350. These new updates with Meteor 350 are likely to bring more retro-ness and classic-ness.We say this because Meteor 350 has always embraced a neo-retro cruiser look, instead of a classic cruiser look. Elements lending Meteor 350 a neo-retro appeal are alloy wheels and a blackened engine bay. Royal Enfield is bringing more chrome into the equation that will uplift its classic appeal considerably.2023 Royal Enfield Meteor 350More chrome is in the form of wire-spoke rims, engine bay finish (think Classic 350 Chrome Red) and headlight housing garnish. Adding more retro charm is an all-new front fender too. Rather, an all-new mud guard for the front fender brings an old-world charm of the yesteryears. Hat tip to automotive enthusiast Aditya Raja for sharing these exclusive spy shots.Mechanically similar to current modelThis new test mule is based on top-spec Supernova trim. Except for the new LED headlights, design changes and chrome additions are less likely to feature on Fireball and Stellar variants. Fuel tank is similar to the current model too. So, no 20L fuel tank like RE offered on the Thunderbird 350 and 500.Mechanically, the same 349cc J-series engine will power the MY2023 RE Meteor 350. Performance figures stand at 20.2 bhp of power at 6100 RPM and 27 Nm of torque at 4000 RPM, mated to the same 5-speed gearbox. The wire-spoke rim variant of Supernova trim along with new chrome additions will probably sell alongside existing variant with black engine bay and alloy wheel.2023 Royal Enfield Meteor 350While LED headlights will be part of the entire variant range. A small price hike could be associated with this update. Currently, Meteor 350 range costs Rs. 2.04 lakh for Fireball, Rs. 2.10 lakh for Stellar and Rs. 2.25 lakh for Supernova trims (all prices ex-sh). More

Indian Army’s Maruti Gypsy Modified Electric Version Spotted On Road

Maruti Gypsy ElectricMaruti Gypsy electric vehicle has been developed via a collaboration between Indian Army Cell, IIT-Delhi and Tadpole ProjectsOwing to its compact size, agile performance and off-roading capabilities, Maruti Gypsy has remained a preferred choice for the Indian Army. Even when Gypsy was discontinued and no longer available to the general public, Maruti continued to make the 4X4 Gypsy for Indian Armed forces. Other vehicles used by the army include Mahindra Scorpio Classic. Maruti Jimny is also expected to join the armed forces soon. With climate change now impacting one and all, there are efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of Indian Armed forces as well. One relevant example is that of conversion of Army-owned Maruti Gypsy into fully electric vehicle. A total of 10 units have been converted, as part of a pilot project. If things work out as desired, more orders can be placed for conversion.Maruti Gypsy electric spottedDetails about electric Gypsy were already available, but this is the first time it has been spotted on the roads. While electric Gypsy may not be suitable for active operations, it can be certainly used across civilian and cantonment areas. This latest sighting is from Delhi, although the exact location is not known.Electric Gypsy does not seem to have any major changes to its body panelling. Differentiating factors come in the form of a green paint job on the sides of the SUV. The term ‘Pure EV’ is also painted in green. Another change is the green number plate.[embedded content]Why convert petrol Gypsy to electric? One of the key benefits of converting petrol Gypsy into electric is the significant reduction in operational cost. Electric Gypsy has certified range of 120 km. A full charge costs Rs 120, which means operating cost is Rs 1 per kilometre. In comparison, running the same distance on petrol will cost Rs 1,200. As of now, only 10 Gypsy units have been converted into electric. If the same approach is used for hundreds of units of petrol-powered Gypsy, savings worth lakhs are possible every year.Conversion to electric also means an extension of the vehicle’s lifespan. This will help in reducing capital expenditure, allocated for procuring new vehicles. Environmental impact also has to be considered, as electric Gypsy has zero emissions. In comparison, petrol powered Gypsy has carbon emission of 3.3 grams per kilometre.Conversion of petrol-Gypsy to electric involves complete removal of the engine, fuel tank and linked componentry. The vehicle is then fitted with lithium-iron phosphate batteries and a PMS electric motor. This is likely a one-way process, as reconverting the vehicle back to petrol will be a cumbersome, time-consuming and costly affair.Maruti Gypsy electric has a 21.7 kW, 72 Volt battery pack. Torque output is more than that of the petrol unit. A full charge takes around 9 hours when connected to a 15 Amp charger. Maruti Gypsy electric has a top speed of 70 kmph. The cost of conversion works out at Rs 5,78,200 per unit. More

2024 Aston Martin DB12 Revealed as a 671-HP ‘Super’ Tourer

Expected to start at $245K, the 2024 Aston Martin DB12 debuts as the successor to the outgoing DB11.The DB12 features a 671-hp twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8, and Aston claims it’ll hit 60 mph in 3.5 seconds on the way to its 202-mph top speed.Along with countless chassis enhancements, the DB12 has an electronic rear differential and Michelin Pilot Sport S 5 performance tires.Out with the old, in with the new. That’s the gist of Aston Martin’s move to replace the DB11 with a new model, one the company prefers to call a super tourer rather than a grand tourer. Marketing grandeur aside, the 2024 Aston Martin DB12 that has now been revealed to the world is indeed grander than the model it’s replacing. There’s no mistaking the new DB12 for anything but an Aston Martin, and the low and wide two-door’s recognizable design is, well, by design. The grille gets bigger, the swept-back headlights have a new lighting signature, and the frameless side mirrors are smaller. The car’s front and rear tracks are also wider (about 0.2 inch in front and 0.9 inch in back). On the nose of the car is Aston’s recently revised winged logo, with the DB12 being the first production car it has appeared on.Under That Long HoodWelcoming the latest DB model also means saying goodbye to the twin-turbocharged 5.2-liter V-12 that was previously available. Now, the sole engine choice—at least until Aston reveals a potential AMR performance variant—is a twin-turbo V-8 with the same 4.0-liters of displacement as before. Also like before, the engine is still a hand-built unit sourced from Mercedes-AMG. However, Aston has unlocked a lot more power mainly by adding larger turbos, revising the compression ratios, and completely overhauling the cooling system. The new-and-improved V-8’s peak output is 671 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 590 pound-feet of torque between 2750 and 6000 rpm. Not only are those figures significantly higher than the prior V-8’s 528 horses and 513 pound-feet, but they’re more than the old V-12 too, which produced 630 ponies and 516 pound-feet. The enhanced 4.o-liter still feeds the rear axle via an eight-speed automatic gearbox that now has a shorter final-drive ratio. Aston says the DB12 will hit 60 mph in 3.5 seconds, and its top speed is a claimed 202 mph.Power to the PavementThe DB12 rides on a newly developed suspension that has firmer anti-roll bars and Aston’s latest adaptive dampers. They support a set of 21-inch wheels inside specially developed Michelin Pilot Sport S 5 summer tires, size 275/35R-21 in front and 315/30R-21 out back. The rear rubber is also better controlled by the introduction of an electronic rear differential the company says can almost instantly go from fully open to fully locked. The DB12’s front wheels are directed by an updated electronic steering system that brings a non-isolated steering column that Aston says improves feel. Bringing the car to a stop are a set of standard 15.7-inch front and 14.2-inch rear cast-iron rotors. A new brake booster is said to improve pedal feel, and those who want the ultimate braking experience can opt for the carbon-ceramic set, which is said to save about 60 pounds of unsprung weight. Along with the DB12’s revised chassis, its bonded aluminum structure is said to be 7 percent, a byproduct of improvements made to the car’s underbody braces.Inside the DB12Since the DB12 is intended to be more than a grand tourer—it’s billed as a super tourer, mind you—it must have an interior to match that mission. While we can’t comment on its legroom or headroom, nor can we say how comfortable or uncomfortably the driving position is until we get to climb inside one, but the pictures suggest the cabin will be more livable than before. The expensive materials and endless customization available through Aston’s Q program are a given, but the DB12’s interior also appears to have improved ergonomics. The dashboard design is cleaner, and it looks like there could be more cubby space based on the opening below the center stack. A host of physical switchgear, including rollers for volume and HVAC controls as well as a stubby electronic shifter, is located on the incline between the cupholders and the infotainment system. The latter also looks much improved over the old Mercedes-sourced setup.Aston’s new in-house infotainment system features a 10.3-inch touchscreen and comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The onboard navigation features 3-D mapping and an online connection, but we think the smartphone mirroring will be the default for getting directions for most users. Along with the ability to accept over-the-air software updates, the DB12’s system marks the debut of Aston’s new smartphone app, which provides access to vehicle-specific content as well as subscription services, three of which are free for the first three years. The 2024 Aston Martin DB12 will go on sale in America sometime in the third quarter of this year. While the company hasn’t released official pricing, it did say the coupe body style is expected to start at $245,000. For those familiar with the DB11, that corresponds to a roughly $37K increase over the V-8 coupe. We expect the convertible DB12 Volante to be revealed at some point, and it’ll likely start around $260K.Driving the Old DB11This content is imported from poll. Lotus and Alpine Cancel Their Joint Electric Sports Car Project

Lotus and Alpine have halted work on their joint electric sports car project, Automotive News Europe has reported. The companies had signed a memorandum of understanding in 2021 to build a new, lightweight electric sports car together. The new vehicle would feature technology from both firms, and serve as the replacement to the internal-combustion (and fantastic) Alpine A110. “Today’s announcement is the first step in what is set to be a hugely rewarding collaboration between our iconic brands,” former Lotus CEO Phil Popham said in a statement at the time. “We are proud to be working with Groupe Renault in this collaboration—sharing Lotus’ technical expertise and abilities, and leveraging our long track record of successful collaborations. Our companies have much in common—from a pioneering pedigree in light-weighting, to championship-winning sports cars which perform as impressively on the road as they do in the motorsports arena. It is a natural fit in many ways and the co-development of an EV sports car is hugely exciting for our companies, our fans and customers around the world.”Lotus and Alpine Past, Present, FutureBut the project is no more. Lotus confirmed to Automotive News Europe that the two companies had decided not to progress in the project, a decision the British company claimed was mutual. It doesn’t mean, however, that the collaboration between the two brands is totally dead.”We have decided not to progress with the joint development of a sports car for Alpine,” Lotus told Road & Track in an email. “This is a mutual decision reached amicably and we will continue to discuss other future opportunities.”A spokesman for Lotus added that “Lotus’s commitment to an EV sports car remains as strong as ever.”Reviews EditorArguably the most fickle member of the Road & Track staff, Reviews Editor Mack Hogan is likely the only person to ever cross shop an ND Miata with an Isuzu Vehicross. 2024 Volkswagen Atlas Sees Its Base Price Rise $2630 to Just over $39K

The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport cost a couple thousand dollars more than before, but they also look fresher and boast a host of new content. The base-level SE trim for the regular Atlas and its sloped-roof counterpart, the Cross Sport, now start at $39,075 and $38,065, respectively. Compared with the previous model year, the former price rises $2630 and the latter is up $2310.Upgrades Lead to Upped PricesAs part of a comprehensive facelift, VW made myriad improvements to the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport lineups. Along with sharper exterior styling and a more upscale interior, all models now exclusively come with a 269-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. The new powertrain replaces the 235-hp turbo four and 276-hp 3.6-liter V-6 that were previously offered. The updates are a big reason both VW SUVs receive relatively modest price hikes.Circling back to the Atlas SE, opting for all-wheel drive adds $1900 and the Technology package costs $3940. The price of those add-ons apply to the Cross Sport version too. The next-level Atlas SEL and Atlas Cross Sport SEL with front-wheel drive both cost $3260 more, with prices now starting at $49,795 and $48,785, respectively. The Cross Sport alone offers an SEL R-Line, which comes standard with all-wheel drive and costs $50,235 (up $2760).Pricing for the Peak Edition Folks interested in the new rugged-looking Peak Edition can only find it on the regular Atlas. Along with all-wheel drive, it includes all-terrain tires mounted on 18-inch wheels, silver accents on the lower body bits to look tough, and black exterior trim as well as “Peak Edition” callouts inside. The 2024 Atlas Peak Edition SE comes with the Technology package and costs $47,905; the Peak Edition SEL costs $51,785.The SEL Premium R-Line is the fanciest version of both VW SUVs. Among the top trim level’s many desirable standard features are all-wheel drive, 21-inch wheels, a surround-view camera system, a Harmon/Kardon stereo, and park-assist tech. The Atlas SEL Premium R-Line starts at $53,805, and the Cross Sport version starts at $52,795—both of which are almost the same price as the previous model year.More on the Atlas SUVsThis content is imported from poll.
