See the 2022 Honda Civic Type R Rip on the Track

Honda shared a video of the 2022 Civic Type R testing at the Suzuka Circuit in Japan. It’s expected to use a more powerful turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, and now you can hear its improved soundtrack. The new Civic Type R will arrive by the end of the year and make its debut soon. Honda’s new Civic Type R hot hatch is almost here, and now you can see the 11th-generation car in action in this teaser video of a prototype testing at the Suzuka Circuit in Japan. Not only will the new car have a simpler and more mature look compared to the old car, it’ll also have a better soundtrack, something many drivers complained about during our 40,000-mile test of a 2019 example.

    Honda

Honda still hasn’t shared many details on the new car’s powertrain, though we’ll get more information soon. We expect the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with tweaks that will help it produce slightly more than the current 306 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The best news is that Honda confirmed that a six-speed manual will remain standard (#SavetheManuals). A dual-clutch automatic transmission, a first for the Type R, could also be offered.

    Honda

At the 57-second mark, an uncamouflaged metallic green car flashes by (pictured), and we’re curious if this color will be offered on the production car. It could be a flashy launch color or just the uniquely camouflaged prototype Honda plans to show at the Tokyo Auto Salon. Other than that, the quick look of the car is the closest we’ve gotten to an uncovered look at the hot hatch.

While the current-gen car comes equipped with Continental SportContact 6 tires, the new car will wear Michelin Pilot Sport 4S rubber on new black 10-spoke wheels. Brembo brakes are also visible, and the large rear wing is subtler. Three exhaust tips continue to stick out the middle of the rear diffuser. The 2022 Honda Civic Type R is set to go on sale by the end of the year, so its full debut should be right around the corner. Check back here for all the details and specs soon.

The W-16–Powered Bugatti Chiron and Bolide Are Sold Out

Bugatti revealed that all 500 units of the Chiron and all 40 units of the Bolide have sold. The final units of the Chiron and Bolide could be the last Bugattis powered by the massive 8.0-liter W-16 motor. Future Bugattis will use electric powertrains developed with Croatian automaker Rimac, which merged with Bugatti last summer. With Batmobile-esque styling and an 1825-hp quad-turbo 8.0-liter W-16, Bugatti’s Bolide concept merely seemed like a flight of fancy, but Bugatti shocked the world last summer by announcing that it would go into production as a track-only hypercar with a still-bonkers 1578 horses. Now Bugatti has revealed that all 40 Bolides have been sold out, with each customer spending around $4.8 million for the privilege of owning one of Bugatti’s most radical models.

    Bugatti

Bugatti also reported that the remainder of the Chiron’s production run is sold out, with 110 wealthy customers putting in orders for the street-legal hypercar. The Chiron was first unveiled in 2016 as the successor to the Veyron and has since spawned several special editions, including the Super Sport 300+, which topped 300 mph on the Ehra-Lessien test track in 2019. Only 500 Chirons will be built in total, and as of last fall 300 units had already been produced.

Bugatti says that of the 150 customers who ordered a Bugatti in 2021, 60 percent were new to the brand. With the Chiron and Bolide now sold out, Bugatti will turn its attention to an electrified future. Last year, Bugatti merged with Croatian electric supercar maker Rimac and announced that future Bugattis will employ Rimac’s high-performance electric drivetrains. It shouldn’t be too long before we see the first product of this budding new partnership, but we wouldn’t be surprised it this marks the end of the line for Bugatti’s epic W-16 engine.

2023 Honda HR-V Previewed in Wintry Sketches

Honda has given a first glimpse at the 2023 HR-V for the U.S. market. The sketches show the subcompact crossover’s basic design but don’t reveal much.Honda says the new model will go on sale later this year.Honda’s snowy teaser images for the redesigned 2023 HR-V could easily be mistaken for illustrations on a holiday card, but they’re actually our first glimpse at the redesigned small SUV that’s set to go on sale in the U.S. later this year.

    Honda

The new 2023 HR-V will replace the aging current-generation model that has been around since 2014. It appears that it doesn’t share a body with the Europe-market HR-V hybrid that was revealed last year, suggesting that the U.S. model will be larger. It could be based on the Civic’s platform, which would be a departure from the current model’s Fit-based underpinnings.

We’re guessing that the HR-V’s powertrain will also mirror the latest Civic’s, with both the 158-hp naturally aspirated 2.0-liter and 180-hp turbo 1.5-liter inline-four engine options likely. A hybrid could join the lineup, too. Either front- or all-wheel drive will be available, along with a CVT automatic. Any of these combinations will be a welcome upgrade over the outgoing HR-V’s underpowered 1.8-liter inline-four with just 141 horsepower.Look for more details—and some real photos—to come within the next few months as Honda starts to launch the 2023 HR-V in earnest.

Listen to the Cadillac Escalade V's Burly Supercharged V-8

This video shows the Cadillac Escalade V accelerating hard, and the sound is telling. It’s expected to use GM’s supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 V-8 engine that’s also found in the CT5-V Blackwing and C7 Corvette Z06.The high-performance three-row SUV is expected to make its debut sometime this year. Our spy photographers have caught the forthcoming Cadillac Escalade V testing once again, further indicating that the high-performance model is on the way. And this time you can hear its powerful V-8 at full throttle. Even though Cadillac said the 10Best-winning CT4-V and CT5-V Blackwings would be the last gas-powered V cars, it appears this powerful three-row SUV will soon arrive as an American alternative to other super-SUVs such as the Mercedes-AMG GLS63.

It’s not yet clear if the Escalade V will also use the Blackwing name, but it is expected to use the same engine as the CT5-V Blackwing. The supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 V-8 makes 668 horsepower and 659 pound-feet of torque in that sedan, and the quad-tip exhaust seen on these Escalade prototypes looks similar to the Blackwing’s. We expect the LT4’s output to be lower in the Escalade V, however. Currently, the Escalade is offered with two engine choices: a 420-hp 6.2-liter V-8 or a turbo-diesel 3.0-liter inline-six. Both standard- and long-wheelbase configurations will be available, as the V prototype seen in this clip is the stretched Escalade ESV. Other than the quad exhaust tips, the V should feature black trim and other styling elements to set it apart from the standard Escalades. It’ll also come equipped with Cadillac’s adjustable magnetorheological dampers, upgraded brakes, and other chassis enhancements. Check back for more information on the Cadillac Escalade V in the coming months as the high-performance model is expected to arrive by the end of the year.

Lexus LX600 with Off-Road Modifications Revealed for Tokyo Auto Salon

Lexus has revealed a modified LX600, in collaboration with aftermarket parts supplier JAOS, for the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon. The show car adds front and rear skid plates, more aggressive wheel arches, 20-inch wheels, and all-terrain tires. The customized LX is based on the Japan-only Offroad model, which has locking front, center, and rear differentials.Toyota’s revered off-road Land Cruiser SUV may not be returning to the United States, but Americans will still be able to purchase its luxurious sibling, the Lexus LX600. Now, ahead of the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon, Lexus has revealed a customized LX Offroad model in collaboration with aftermarket equipment supplier JAOS.
The JAOS-modified show car is based on the LX600 Offroad, a special version of the LX created for the Japanese market. It gains lightweight front and rear skid plates fashioned from CFRP, or carbon-fiber-reinforced polymers, as well as chunkier CFRP wheel arches. The show car rides on 20-inch Enkei wheels wrapped in Toyo Open Country A/T III 285/55R20 tires. There are also mud flaps at all four corners.

The LX600’s twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 is untouched, still churning out 409 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. The engine routes its power through a 10-speed automatic transmission, and four-wheel-drive comes standard. The Offroad model adds locking differentials in the front, center and rear for increased off-road agility. While the modifications seen on the Tokyo Auto Salon show car likely won’t be available from the factory, they show what owners of the new LX600 can do to make their luxury Land Cruiser even better at tackling unpaved terrain.

First Chevy C8 Corvette Z06 to Be Sold at Barrett-Jackson Auction

The 2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is likely to be the most extreme sports car ever to be assembled in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Thanks to the folks at Barrett-Jackson, one lucky collector will have a chance to take home the first retail production example at the firm’s 2022 Scottsdale auction. Unveiled in October 2021, the new Z06 packs a 5.5-liter LT6 V-8 with dual overhead cams and a flat-plane crankshaft. It’s the most potent atmospheric V-8 to enter production. The motor provides an unmatched 670 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque while revving to 8600 rpm. Combined with revised bodywork and other C8.R-derived tweaks, the car promises to shake up the current supercar landscape. The first Z06 will be sold no reserve as Lot 3009 at the Scottsdale auction and should cross the block at approximately 10:30 p.m. ET on January 29. The full selling price of the car will go to the Operation Homefront charity, which helps U.S. military families in need.Chevrolet is no stranger to selling off some of its more special Corvette models at Barrett-Jackson, specifically in the name of charity. In fact, some of the most important Corvettes in recent history followed the same path as this upcoming 2023 Z06. In 2019, the final front-engine Corvette ever built was sold at the Barrett-Jackson Northeast auction. The car in question was a Z06 model finished in black and was purchased by Dan Snyder of Snyder Motorsports for $2.9 million. At Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale 2020 event, the first production C8 Corvette was sold to Rick Hendrick for $3 million. That sale set a record for the largest amount of money ever spent on a Barrett-Jackson charity car. The proceeds from each sale benefited the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation and the Detroit Children’s Fund, respectively. While both of those machines were historically significant, neither had the same sort of performance on offer as this latest Corvette creation. As with the first C8 auction back in 2020, we don’t know exactly how this car will be optioned at this time. The buyer of this Z06 will instead have the ability to spec the car as they see fit. With the new generation being the most customizable variant yet, that involves the choice between 12 different exterior colors, as well as seven different interior and wheel packages. Barrett-Jackson hasn’t listed an official VIN from General Motors at this time, but the words “first retail production example” might suggest it won’t carry the #001 tag.

    Andi Hedrick

This particularly special Z06 isn’t going to come cheap. In fact, we wouldn’t be surprised to see this thing become the most expensive of the aforementioned bunch.

GM to Launch CarBravo, Its Own Used Car Sales Website

GM announced today that it will start a used-vehicle selling website that it’s calling CarBravo, which will leverage its dealer network and the approximately half-million used vehicles they have in stock.Customers will be able to shop online or at a GM dealership, and either way they can shop for vehicles in stock at dealers across the United States.GM will use Black Book to arrive at dollar figures and will give “guaranteed online offers” to buy customers’ vehicles even if they don’t buy another one using the website. It was probably inevitable: General Motors is responding to the huge uptick in used-vehicle prices and the growing popularity of websites that buy and sell used cars, and it’s starting its own site. GM’s CarBravo website is set to begin doing business this spring, and dealers are being enrolled now, the automaker announced today.

The strength of a GM sales website is in the company’s enormous network of some 4200 dealers. As Automotive News pointed out today, those dealers have 400,000 used vehicles in inventory each year, and GM Financial has another half a million. Carvana, which saw 74 percent growth year over year as of late 2021, said in a report that it sold 111,949 used vehicles to customers in the third quarter.

    GM

GM said it will offer CarBravo buyers “standard warranty coverage” and trial subscriptions to OnStar and SiriusXM for some vehicles, without giving details. Of course, the company points out that the buyers are welcome to use GM’s Financial unit and its network of service and maintenance facilities through its dealerships. It’s interesting to consider that in July 2021, citing the global chip shortage and the desire to support its dealers, GM made it the rule that lease holders could no longer sell their vehicles outside the GM dealership network at the end of the term, which should help to bolster the available inventory on CarBravo. We have reached out to GM to determine whether that policy will continue in the future. Some dealers will offer at-home test drives and home delivery. Customers will be able to buy completely online, completely through a dealership, or a combination of the two. GM also says it will buy customers’ vehicles, relying on Black Book numbers, with “guaranteed” offers, even if they don’t purchase another vehicle from CarBravo. In that, it sounds similar to Carvana and other websites that buy and sell used cars.

Mitsubishi Teases Ralliart Revival with Outlander Concept

The Mitsubishi Vision Ralliart concept, based on the Outlander, is headed to the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon. The concept follows the announcement last year that Mitsubishi is reviving is performance subbrand. The Vision Ralliart gains wider wheel arches, bigger brakes, and a menacing blacked-out look.Last year Mitsubishi announced the return of the Ralliart performance subbrand. The sporty moniker, which adorned the Galant and Lancer in the 2000s, has laid dormant in the U.S. since 2014. The first glimpse of the Ralliart revival came late last year when Mitsubishi unveiled Ralliart versions of the Triton pickup and Pajero Sport SUV for the Thai market. While these were simply appearance packages that added garish red and black stickers, ahead of the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon Mitsubishi has revealed the Vision Ralliart concept, which hints at a more serious Ralliart resurrection.

The Vision Ralliart concept is based on the Outlander SUV which, unlike the Triton and Pajero Sport, is sold in the U.S. The concept features aggressive styling, with beefy wheel arches, a large rear diffuser, and 22-inch wheels. Mitsubishi didn’t reveal what is under the hood, but the fact that the upper grille appears to be blocked off hints that it could be the plug-in-hybrid powertrain coming for 2023. Mitsubishi does mention “the powerful torque of the motors,” implying a hybrid setup. Mitsubishi did specify that the concept has larger brake discs and upgraded calipers.

Mitsubishi is also bringing six other vehicles to the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon, although none is destined for the American market. There is a puny electric kei-car concept called the K-EV concept X Style as well as the Minicab-MiEV B-Leisure Style, a tiny electric van outfitted for camping. Mitsubishi also debuted Ralliart Style appearance packages for the Outlander and Eclipse Cross. There are also off-road versions of the Outlander and Delica, called the Wild Adventure Style and D:5 Tough x Tough. While these six creations will remain forbidden fruit, the Vision Ralliart concept could preview a U.S.-bound sporty SUV. Hopefully the production version will feature true performance upgrades instead of just flashy visuals.
