GMC Raising Prices for Hummer EV Pickup and SUV Models

Pricing for the Hummer EV is going up by $6650, for all orders placed starting tomorrow, June 18.Existing orders won’t see a change in MSRP.The Edition 1 pickup has already begun deliveries. The EV3X version of the pickup will arrive next, this fall, and the SUV will begin deliveries in spring 2023.If you are all set to order a GMC Hummer EV, the time is now. The prices for both the pickup and SUV models are rising by $6650, but orders placed before tomorrow, June 18, will not see an increase. That includes all existing orders; GMC says that 77,500 people have already placed reservations.

The new prices will apply to the upcoming EV3X, EV2X, and EV2 models. The EV3X, a three-motor version with 830 horsepower, will start at $106,645. The EV2X has a less powerful 625-hp two-motor setup and will start at $96,645. The $86,645 EV2 will be the last to arrive, and it also has 625 hp but a smaller battery pack estimated to provide 250 miles of range, versus the more expensive models’ range estimates of 300-plus miles. The initial run of 1000-hp Edition 1 models is already sold out and thus won’t see a price increase.GMC says it hasn’t shifted the timeline for production of these various Hummer EV models. Those who ordered the EV3X pickup will be able to configure their trucks at some point this summer before deliveries begin this fall. The EV2X pickup will then arrive in spring 2023, with the EV2 pickup to follow in spring 2024. The SUV’s timeline is a bit later, with the Edition 1 arriving in early 2023, the EV3X and EV2X in spring 2023, the EV2 in spring 2024.

2003 Honda S2000 Is Our Bring a Trailer Auction Pick of the Day

This 2003 Honda S2000, currently up for auction on Bring a Trailer, shows less than 15,000 miles on its odometer.A 2003 Honda S2000 took first place in a five-car comparison test we published in August 2003.Bidding for this S2000 closes on Sunday, June 19, and as of Friday was up to $34,000.If at first you don’t succeed, try again. This is seemingly the motto of Bring a Trailer user danjordanhockey, who’s putting this 2003 Honda S2000 back on the auction site—which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos—after the car failed to sell in October 2021. In its first go-around on BaT, this low-mileage S2000 mustered a top bid of $30,000.

Things are already looking up for danjordanhockey this time, though, as the S2000 this individual has owned since 2005 already has a bid of $34,000 as of this writing. And there are still many days left to go until bidding for this car closes on the afternoon of June 19.

    Bring a Trailer

As far as S2000s are concerned, the 2002–2003 models are arguably among the best of the lot. They combine the car’s original high-revving 2.0-liter four-cylinder with the likes of a glass rear window (earlier S2000s have plastic units), improvements to the six-speed manual transmission, and various interior upgrades. Later 2004–2009 S2000s, better known as the AP2 to the 2000–2003 models’ AP1, benefit from additional low-end torque by way of a bigger 2.2-liter engine, but these cars also forgo the 2.0-liter unit’s screaming near-9000-rpm redline for an 8000-rpm setup. With just 14,430 miles on its odometer, this nearly 20-year-old Honda has seen 62 miles added to it since it was last listed in October. It also wears the same 17-inch wheels from an AP2 S2000 that it sported in the earlier listing. Frankly, we think the standard 16-inch wheels make for a better look on these earlier S2000s. Fortunately, swapping out these wheels for the correct units ought to be a pretty inexpensive affair.

    Bring a Trailer

Regardless, these later AP1 S2000s are an absolute riot to drive. In fact, an ’03 S2000 took the top spot in a five-way comparison test we conducted in 2003. In that droptop comparo, the S2000 beat out the Nissan 350Z, the Porsche Boxster, the BMW Z4, and the Audi TT.We summed up the S2000 then as a “four-wheeler with crotch-rocket DNA.” Even today, this verdict holds true. The S2000 offers a visceral, rev-happy driving experience unlike just about anything currently sold. Perhaps that’s why prices for used S2000s continue to rise. Bidding on this one ends on Sunday, June 19.

Toyota bZ4X EV, Other Models Could Expand GR Performance Portfolio

The Toyota bZ4X could get the performance treatment from Gazoo Racing, its chief engineer told Move Electric.Toyota teased the bZ4X GR Sport concept at the Tokyo auto show, and more GR models are expected to come.Even the Toyota Camry could be in line for a GR variant, as reported earlier this month by Motor Trend.Toyota’s motorsport division, Gazoo Racing, is currently responsible for several exciting models, including the GR86 and GR Supra sports cars. With the hotly anticipated GR Corolla, a 300-hp, manual-only, all-wheel-drive version of the regular Corolla hatchback, Gazoo showed it can transform run-of-the-mill models into thrilling creations. Now, the word on the street is that the newly introduced Toyota bZ4X—an electric crossover—could get the GR treatment.

Daisuke Ido, the bZ4X’s chief engineer, recently told Move Electric that a performance version is indeed under consideration and that it would be tuned by the Gazoo Racing team. Ido’s comments come after Toyota teased the bZ4X GR Sport concept at the Tokyo auto show back in January. At the time, its blacked-out appearance and larger rims were the only hints that it wasn’t a standard-issue bZ4X, which in its most potent form features a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive configuration with 214 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque. Otherwise, there were no technical details on the bZ4X GR Sport.Since that concept was shown, however, the Lexus RZ was revealed. Because it rides on the same e-TNGA platform as the bZ4X, its more powerful 308-hp dual-motor powertrain could easily make its way into a potential GR bZ4X. Still, Ido said the decision to develop a GR bZ4X would require more than just mightier electric motors. Instead, he said it needs to handle and perform at a level that Gazoo Racing customers expect. If it’s able to meet those expectations, it would be the first electric vehicle and the first crossover to wear the GR badge.

    Toyota

The proliferation of new GR models across Toyota’s portfolio doesn’t appear to be limited to sports cars and hot hatches. Along with a potential performance version of the bZ4X, perhaps the Camry could be on deck for such a makeover. Speaking with Motor Trend earlier this month, Bob Carter, executive vice president of sales at Toyota, didn’t rule out a possible GR Camry when asked about Gazoo Racing doing a sedan. “Stay tuned,” he said. We shall.

Honda Civic Si FE1 Factory Racer Now Available to Order

Preorders for Honda’s new factory race car based on the 11th-gen Civic opened this week, with deliveries projected for fall 2022. The HPD Civic Si FE1 Race Car is being produced by the Honda Performance Development (HPD) racing division. Tested and developed in-house and built in Marysville, Ohio, it will start at $55,000 with all the bells and whistles to go racing. UPDATED 6/17/2022: The updated story reflects details for which racing series the HPD Civic Si FE1 race car is intended.Honda Performance Development’s racing Civic Si, labeled the HPD Civic Si FE1, that made its debut at SEMA 2021 is now open for preorder. Based on the 2022 Civic Si, it was revealed last fall at SEMA 2021 alongside a slew of other performance-oriented Hondas. Honda announced the FE1 was developed and tested in-house by its HPD engineers and each car will be built at Honda’s Performance Manufacturing Center in Marysville Ohio. The FE1 will start at $55,000 before tax, compared to the roadgoing Civic Si, which starts at $28,595, but it will come equipped for the track with features including an installed roll cage and “a full range of HPD-developed and homologated parts including the engine, suspension, exhaust, fuel cell, and Motec electronics packages.” HPD also removed the original Si’s sunroof, sound proofing, insulation, underbody coating, and seam sealer to slim down the FE1.Aimed for the SRO TCA series, the FE1 appears to be slated to compete against entries from a number of racing outfits. Potential competitors include Subaru BRZ’s built by TechSport Racing, Mini JCW’s from the Mini JCW team, or Hyundai Elantra N-Line racers from the Bryan Herta Autosport W/ Curb-Agajanian. Entry lists for those races can be found here, and include some of our favorite tracks, including Virginia International Raceway and Watkins Glen.

Honda hasn’t released performance numbers, but if the FE1 is anything like the 2022 Si it’s based on, we’re sure it will excite. What we do know is that the FE1 will come equipped with Honda’s L15CA turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-four paired with an “HPD-strengthened” six-speed manual transmission. That engine makes 200 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque in the road car.

    Honda HPD

While the $55,000 sticker price is pretty affordable for a ready-to-race package, the deposit required to secure an order is steep. HPD is asking customers to submit a $25,000 deposit with the remaining balance due when the car is completed.

2023 Chevy Silverado ZR2 Bison Teased Ahead of Summer Arrival

The 2023 Chevy Silverado ZR2 Bison was teased today in a short video Chevy posted on YouTube. The video reveals Bison-specific lights, underbody protection, and wheels from AEV, an off-road-oriented parts supplier. The Silverado ZR2 Bison arrives this summer, and while pricing is still unknown, we expect it to cost about $76,000.Fans of the mid-size Chevy Colorado ZR2 are already familiar with its optional Bison package, which features trail-ready upgrades from American Expedition Vehicles (AEV). Soon, the half-ton Chevy Silverado ZR2 will also get the Bison treatment, as revealed today by a short video clip that Chevy posted on YouTube.

The approximately 30-second video opens with a shrouded shot of the Bison-equipped Silverado’s front lights. Compared with the regular ZR2 version, it appears to have a different set of fog lights in the lower bumper. Since the Colorado ZR2 Bison has a unique steel bumper from AEV, it’s safe to assume the Silverado will get one, too. Also teased in the video are AEV-badged wheels mixed between tracking shots of skid plates underneath the truck, another hallmark of the Bison transformation. The video concludes with a closeup of the tailgate and what looks like a silver-colored appliqué.

    Chevy

While there’s a lot that isn’t shown in the video, we can make some educated guesses about the AEV upgrades that the Silverado ZR2 will get based on the Bison package that’s currently offered on the Colorado variant. Since it doesn’t include any performance modifications, the Silverado ZR2’s 420-hp 6.2-liter V-8, spool-valve dampers, knobby 33-inch all-terrain tires, and electronic locking front and rear diffs should go untouched. The Silverado Bison could also receive special overfenders and a steel rear bumper. A snorkel air intake and a front winch mounting plate are also possible add-ons. Inside, it’ll likely have AEV callouts on the floor mats, headrests, or elsewhere.

    Colorado ZR2 Bison
    Marc Urbano

At the end of the video, viewers are told the 2023 Chevy Silverado ZR2 Bison is coming this summer. The bow-tie brand hasn’t yet released any pricing details, but the 2022 Silverado ZR2 starts at $69,295. The Bison package costs $5750 on the 2022 Colorado ZR2. So, we’d bet the AEV makeover will cost about $6000 on the half-ton truck, putting the Silverado ZR2 Bison at about $76k. Chevy is expected to announce its actual price before it arrives this summer.

Tesla Prices Rise Once Again, Model X Hit Hardest

Tesla raised prices once again for multiple models, with the Model X now starting at $122,440. The higher prices can now be seen on Tesla’s online configurator website. Delivery estimates range from sometime this month into June 2023, depending on which model you select. Tesla raised prices on its entire lineup once again, updating its website overnight to display the changes. We last covered Tesla’s price increases in March, when each car in the lineup was affected. The larger of Tesla’s two SUV offerings, the Model X, was hit the hardest, with an increase of $6000 meaning it now starts at a whopping $122,440. Tesla’s cheapest offering, the rear-wheel-drive Model 3 Standard Range, isn’t any more expensive than it was in March, with a $48,440 starting price. Alternatively, the price of the Model 3 Long Range received a $2500 bump, moving it to $59,440. The Model Y is also more expensive than before, with the Long Range starting at $67,440 and the Performance starting at $71,440. Notably, the only no-cost color options on most models are white and grey, while blue is $1000, black is $1500, and red is $2000.

Prior to Tesla increasing prices in March, CEO Elon Musk tweeted about inflation affecting the cost of raw materials. According to Reuters, Musk says he needs to cut around 10 percent of salaried workers and sent a message to Tesla executives earlier this month directing them to “pause all hiring worldwide.” If you are in the market for a new Tesla and you can’t wait a full year, your options are limited. The Model S Plaid and the Model 3 Performance are the only cars with delivery dates in June 2022, while delivery estimates for the Model X Plaid and the Model Y Performance range from August to October of this year. If you are looking to get into a Model X but aren’t willing to pay for the Plaid, Tesla is estimating delivery won’t take place until between March and June of next year.

Cadillac Celestiq EV Will Be Hand-Built in Michigan

The Celestiq will be hand-built at GM’s Global Technical Center, the first production vehicle to be made there.GM plans to invest over $81 million to prepare the Center, where renovation efforts have already begun, to build the Celestiq. The Celestiq will benefit from the Center’s Additive Industrialization Center, which will provide it with likely the highest volume of 3D-printed parts of any GM production vehicle. GM’s Global Technical Center in Warren, Michigan, has been the company’s home base for engineering and design since its opening in 1956, but it has never built a vehicle for production. That is, until now. Wednesday evening, Cadillac announced that GM plans to manufacture the Celestiq, first teased in early 2021, at the Center. There, it will utilize, “advanced manufacturing technology and tools,” to hand-build Cadillac’s future flagship EV.

The Celestiq is one of 30 EVs GM plans to release by 2025, and we expect it to compete with other luxury EV sedans like the Tesla Model S and the Mercedes-Benz EQS. It follows Cadillac’s EV SUV, the Lyriq, which will likely hit the market as a 2023 model. Like the Lyriq, the Celestiq will use GM’s new line of scalable EV battery technology. This technology is expected to give the Celestiq more than 300 miles of driving range thanks to a battery pack with potential capacity of as much as 100.0 kWh.When the production Celestiq goes on sale, which we expect will be for the 2025 model year, it will likely feature a dual-motor powertrain with all-wheel drive. Four-wheel steering is also a possibility, as well as a full-dashboard LED display and a smart glass roof, of which the transparency can be adjusted in quadrants. All in all, the Celestiq could command a six-figure price when it goes on sale.First, though, the vehicles and all their next-generation components have to be built, and to do that, GM is investing more than $81 million to prep the Global Technical Center for the car’s production. These efforts at the campus have already begun, GM says, and the investment will fund the purchase and installation of manufacturing equipment.

    General Motors

The campus is also home to GM’s Additive Industrialization Center, which opened in 2020 to pioneer GM’s initiatives to 3D-print functional and aesthetic components for its vehicles. The Celestiq will feature more than 100 3D-printed polymer and metal components, which is expected to be the most on any GM production vehicle, and 3D-printed components will also be used in the Celestiq’s assembly process. Additional details on the Celestiq will be available when it’s fully revealed in late July.

Polestar Teases 4 SUV Coupe, Reveals More of 3 SUV, 5 Flagship GT

Polestar showed a photo featuring a trio of upcoming electric vehicles: the 3 SUV, 4 SUV coupe, and 5 flagship GT.This is the second image we’ve seen of the 3, which is due to be revealed in full this October. The 4 is still covered in a sheet in this image, but we can spy a dramatically sloped roofline and a different taillight design from the 3.The Polestar 2, the first fully electric vehicle from Volvo’s performance EV spinoff, is about to enter its third year on the market, with Polestar recently detailing minor changes to the hatchback for the 2023 model year. Soon, however, the 2 will be joined by a trio of new electric cars, and an image released by Polestar gives a taste of what is coming in the near future.

    Polestar

On the left side of the image, sat to the right of the 2 hatchback, is the Polestar 3. We got our first undisguised look at the 3 earlier this month when Polestar revealing a profile shot, and now we have a better view of the rear of the electric SUV. The photo shows taillights with a similar motif to the 2 but flipped upside down, as well as a sloping roofline and clean rear bumper. The Polestar 3 is due to be unveiled in full this October, and should offer around 300 miles of range from its dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain.

    Polestar

Next to the 3 and obscured by a sheet is the Polestar 4, which is being teased for the first time here. The 4 will arrive as a “SUV coupe” counterpart to the 3, and appears to have an even more dramatically tapered roofline and a slightly different taillight shape. Polestar says the 4 will launch in 2023, and we expect it to feature a similar powertrain setup to the 3.

    Polestar

The final car in the photo is the Polestar 5, which is due to arrive in 2024 as a production version of the gorgeous 2020 Precept concept. Polestar has already shown an image of the 5 and we recently uncovered patent images for the production car, but this is one of the cleanest looks that we’ve had at Polestar’s upcoming flagship GT car. The 5 looks incredibly similar to the concept, but with a simpler side sill and normal side view mirrors instead of the concept’s cameras. However, the 5 still appears to do without a rear windshield, likely relying on a camera for rearward visibility. While the 5 won’t arrive for another two years, a prototype will drive up the iconic Goodwood Festival of Speed hill later this month.
