The 400cc class bikes segment in India are a rather tempting one. For starters, this class has ample performance to cruise the highways at triple-digit speeds and meets enthusiastic handling characteristics. This class of motorcycles also don’t put a hole in one’s wallet, offering reasonable fuel efficiency aspects, thus attracting a lot of buyers.

There has been a lot of activity in this segment and is expected to get a lot more activity. With the new calendar year fast approaching, which 400cc class bike should one start their motorcycling journey with? Which is the most pocket-friendly bike in this segment that one can buy at the beginning of 2025? Let’s take a look.

Upcoming India-spec KTM 390 Adventure S, 390 Enduro R

14. KTM 390 Adventure – Rs 3.42 Lakh – 3.64 Lakh (Ex-sh)

If you’re on the verge of buying a new KTM 390 Adventure, waiting for the new model to launch will be a logical move. Current model is priced at Rs 3.42 lakh (Ex-sh) and comes with the old 373cc engine. It is still a capable Adventure-Tourer and there’s a wire-spoke wheel variant priced at Rs 3.64 lakh (Ex-sh).

13. KTM RC 390 – Rs 3.21 Lakh (Ex-sh)

Where KTM’s Supersport RC 390 is concerned, an updated model donning the new 399cc engine still has a long time to launch. If a KTM 390 Supersport is what you crave, the 373cc engine-equipped model can be bought starting from Rs 3.21 lakh (Ex-sh).

12. KTM 390 Duke – Rs 3.13 Lakh (Ex-sh)

If you have to buy a KTM motorcycle with the new 399cc engine right away, 390 Duke is the only option. It starts from Rs 3.13 lakh (Ex-sh) and gets the new engine with 45.3 bhp and 39 Nm, mated to a 6-speed gearbox. Fully adjustable suspension, bi-directional quick-shifter and a host of electronic rider aids are notable elements.

11. Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 – Rs 2.92 Lakh (Ex-sh)

KTM doesn’t offer a Scrambler-style motorcycle based on the new 399cc platform. However, Husqvarna does, in the form of Svartpilen 401. It is almost the same motorcycle as the new 390 Duke and is priced a lot attractively at Rs 2.92 lakh (Ex-sh). Also, Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 doesn’t have a “certain tag” that Indian motorcycle fraternity has given KTM bikes (IYKWIM).

10. Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 – Rs 2.85 Lakh (Ex-sh) – Rs 2.98 Lakh (Ex-sh)

For the first time, Royal Enfield is offering a tech-loaded and modern powertrain with Sherpa 450 engine. Himalayan 450 was the first motorcycle to debut this platform and is quite popular in India, priced between Rs 2.85 lakh (Ex-sh) and Rs 2.98 lakh (Ex-sh). This 40 bhp and 40 Nm powertrain has good reception too.

9. KTM 390 Adventure X – Rs 2.84 Lakh (Ex-sh)

With the launch of 390 Adventure X, KTM stunned the automotive fraternity. That’s because Team Orange is not known to strike VFM quotients and 390 Adventure X was an exception. Priced at Rs 2.8 lakh (Ex-sh), 390 Adventure X is between Rs 58K and Rs 80K more affordable than Standard 390 Adventure.

8. Triumph Scrambler 400X – Rs 2.65 Lakh (Ex-sh)

Scrambler 400X is the most expensive Bajaj-Triumph motorcycle, priced at Rs 2.65 lakh (Ex-sh). The main strengths of this motorcycle include the high service interval, fit and finish, adorable neo-retro looks and affordable performance. The componentry is quite premium too and is quite popular in India.

7. Triumph Speed 400 – Rs 2.4 Lakh (Ex-sh)

The Roadster from Bajaj-Triumph’s camp is called Speed 400 and it was recently updated to MY25. The recently launched 2025 Speed 400 is priced at Rs 2.4 lakh (Ex-sh). It is achingly pretty and gets the same 398.15cc single-cylinder DOHC 4V/cyl liquid-cooled engine with 39.5 bhp and 37.5 Nm, mated to a 6-speed gearbox.

6. Harley-Davidson X440 – Rs 2.39 Lakh (Ex-sh) – Rs 2.79 Lakh (Ex-sh)

With the launch of Harley-Davidson X440, the company entered a completely new price segment. Speaking of, X440 is priced between Rs 2.39 lakh (Ex-sh) and Rs 2.79 lakh (Ex-sh). The 440cc oil-cooled engine is capable of generating 27 bhp of peak power and 38 Nm of peak torque. The instrumentation gets Bluetooth and turn-by-turn navigation as well.

5. Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 – Rs 2.39 Lakh (Ex-sh) – Rs 2.54 Lakh (Ex-sh)

Guerrilla 450 was launched earlier this year and was one of the most anticipated launches in India. It brought RE’s new Sherpa 450 platform to a new price point starting from Rs 2.39 lakh (Ex-sh) and goes till Rs 2.54 lakh (Ex-sh). Lower weight and an affordable price tag are the main highlights of Guerrilla 450, when compared to Himalayan 450.

4. Bajaj Dominar 400 – Rs 2.26 Lakh (Ex-sh)

Dominar 400 is probably the oldest offering on this list. It has grown longer in the tooth, but Bajaj has ensured the appeal is still relevant. That’s because Bajaj Dominar 400 is offered in one fully-loaded variant that gets a lot of touring accessories as standard. The 373cc KTM-derived engine is still capable with 40 bhp and 35 Nm of performance.

3. Triumph Speed T4 – Rs 1.99 Lakh (Ex-sh)

With the launch of Speed T4, Triumph achieved a new price point in the 400cc segment in India. Priced at Rs 1.99 lakh (Ex-sh), Speed T4 gets a manual throttle, RSU telescopic front forks, skinnier tyres and more, to achieve a lower price point. Also, the performance is dulled-down at 30.6 bhp and 36 Nm. Speed T4 gets a new and Bassier exhaust setup too.

2. Hero Mavrick 440 – Rs 1.99 Lakh (Ex-sh) – Rs 2.24 Lakh (Ex-sh)

The Hero MotoCorp counterpart of Harley-Davidson X440 is called Mavrick 440 and is launched at a much more affordable price point starting from Rs 1.99 lakh (Ex-sh). The top-spec ‘Top’ variant is also quite affordable at Rs 2.24 lakh (Ex-sh). Rushlane recently reviewed Hero Mavrick 440 and it impressed us and is a performant and underrated package.

1. Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z – 1.85 Lakh (Ex-sh)

Nothing beats the value quotient offered by Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z in this segment. Nothing. Priced at Rs 1.85 lakh (Ex-sh), Pulsar NS400Z comes equipped with a similar 373cc engine that is also seen with the most expensive product on this list, the KTM 390 Adventure. It makes 39.5 bhp and 35 Nm in Pulsar NS400Z, mated to a 6-speed gearbox.
