You Can Now Get Scissor Doors on the C8 Chevy Corvette, but Why?

The first production car to have doors that opened upward in winglike fashion was the Lamborghini Countach, and ever since, these swing-up doors have been a flashy way to open doors on exotic sports cars. And while the new 2020 Corvette now has a mid-engine layout, putting it awfully close, or even in, exotic-sports-car territory, it doesn’t come from the factory with obnoxious scissor doors. Can we please keep it that way, people?

However, Eikōn Motorsports in Scottsdale, Arizona, a shop that installs “Lambo” door kits on all kinds of cars ranging from Acuras to Dodge Challengers, is now offering a swing-up door kit for the C8 Corvette. We just hope these don’t become more common than Teslas with vanity plates.

The kit costs $2999 and includes two gas shocks, two vertical doors with “Lambo” door hinges, all the mounting hardware, installation, and a lifetime warranty. Pre-orders are now available on the shop’s website, where the company claims that the regular retail price for the kit plus install will increase to $4300 after this initial offer.

Unlike our previous experience with aftermarket scissor doors, Eikōn claims it doesn’t have to cut or extend the wiring to get the slack it needs when the doors go up. That’s one bit of good news, but the door systems likely aren’t crash tested, and they aren’t true scissor doors, either. Unlike doors that have been designed to open upward, these still employ the factory latches so they must first open outward, as before, before going skyward. We anticipate the front fenders will also need to be modified, so swapping back could be an extremely expensive proposition.

In its first year, the C8 Corvette earned a spot on C/D’s 10Best Cars list. It’s powered by a mid-mounted 6.2-liter V-8 that produces 490 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. During our testing, it launched to 60 mph in 2.8 seconds and raced to the quarter-mile in 11.2 seconds at 122 mph. It’s just the beginning for the C8, too. We already have some details on the higher-performance Z06, Grand Sport, ZR-1, and hybrid Zora variants.
