VW Beefs Up Atlas SUV's Looks with Basecamp Appearance Package

  • The 2021 VW Atlas is adding a new styling accessory package called Basecamp.
  • It includes extra body cladding and trim pieces and can be paired with special wheels and all-terrain tires.
  • The full Basecamp package costs over $4000, including the cost of wheels and tires, and certain elements are available as individual accessories.

The Volkswagen Atlas is getting a new styling package to make it look more rugged and off-road-ready. Sharing its name with a previous Atlas concept vehicle, the Basecamp package will now be offered as a set of accessories for the refreshed 2021 Atlas three-row SUV. It includes extra plastic cladding and other styling elements and can be paired with a special set of wheels and tires to complete the look.

The styling package costs $2500 and includes a bumper guard, larger fender flares, and silver trim for the rocker panels and rear valance. Each of these elements is also available as a stand-alone accessory, although you only get Basecamp fender badges if you opt for the whole set. The cool-looking 17-inch fifteen52 wheels are sold separately for $250 each, as are all-terrain tires, which can range up to over $800 for a set of four depending on brand (VW recommends a size of 245/70R-17). So all of the Basecamp extras as pictured here would likely total upward of $4000.

VW dealers will offer the Basecamp package for any 2021 Atlas except for R-Line models, and it’s only recommended for vehicles equipped with a trailer hitch. It won’t be offered for the slightly smaller, two-row Atlas Cross Sport, as VW says it intends to position that model as more on-road-focused.
