Shoved in with all the graphs and spreadsheets of fourth-quarter 2019 results, Tesla inserted a photo of the production version of the Model Y. With the market hungry for crossovers and SUVs, an impressive range of 304 miles, and production already underway, the Model Y has the potential to be the automaker’s top-selling vehicle.

While the introduction of the Model Y wasn’t as groundbreaking as the hoopla around Models 3, S, and X, it’s clear it is going to be big. SUV and crossover sales continue to dwarf sedan sales in the United States, and the Model X is probably a bit too radical and expensive for most potential EV buyers, so the Model Y appears to hit the sweet spot buyres are looking for: an EV with plenty of cargo space and a high sitting position.
It also helps that the long-range version of the Model Y will ship with an EPA range of 315 miles. Earlier estimates had set the range at 280 miles. A 35-mile range bump is impressive. During the quarterly call, Musk announced that the car has an efficiency of 4.1 miles per kilowatt-hour, which explains how its range is greater than had been previously announced.
Production has already started, and Tesla says it expects to start making deliveries by the end of the first quarter.
