- Aston Martin has confirmed its new hybrid turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 powertrain and released new photos and video.
- The new powertrain will first be used in the upcoming Valhalla mid-engine sports car that was co-developed with Red Bull Racing.
- The mid-mounted six-cylinder, which will be built in the U.K., weighs less than 440 pounds.
Aston Martin uses an AMG-sourced twin-turbocharged V-8 in the Vantage, the entry-level DB11, and the soon-to-launch DBX, but AMG is soon replacing that eight-cylinder with a hybrid four. So, Aston has developed its own engine to replace the AMG V-8—a hybrid turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6—that will first be used in the mid-engine 2022 Valhalla.
Aston says it will only build 500 examples of the Valhalla, which is the third mid-engine car developed alongside Red Bull Racing; the others are the Valkyrie and the track-only Valkyrie AMR Pro. The specs of the new 3.0-liter, including horsepower and torque, have yet to be announced, but Aston says that they “will be determined by the desired characteristics of each product it serves and confirmed at the time of launch,” meaning this powertrain could be used in additional future products.
The new engine, which will be built in the U.K., is equipped with a dry sump system, which allows the engine to be mounted as low as possible in the car, giving it a lower center of gravity.
Aston CEO Andy Palmer told C/D that the transmission won’t need to mix the powertrain’s electrical assistance with the internal-combustion engine and will be able to work with the brand’s existing gearboxes.
There’s also good news for purists: Aston remains committed to producing its V-12 engine, and the manual gearbox currently found in the Vantage could make its way into other Aston Martin products.
