You just saw the new Porsche Taycan electric sports sedan creepin’ its way through the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, Germany, during Porsche’s Super Bowl commercial. But let us be the first to tell you: the 2020 Porsche Taycan electric sports sedan really isn’t that quiet.
During our testing, the Porsche Taycan Turbo S, the model featured in Porsche’s Super Bowl commercial, measured an interior sound level of 35 decibels at idle. Don’t know how to quantify decibel levels in your head? That’s okay. For comparison, we measured 33 decibels in the Tesla Model S. And with the pedal mashed to the floor, the Taycan was still louder—three decibels louder, that is. The only time it’s quieter than the Tesla is during a 70-mph cruise—and even at that, only by one decibel.

The Taycan makes a significant amount of noise while accelerating, so the Porsche Museum security guards must be wearing ear protection. Because electric motors make very little sound, Porsche and many other EV manufacturers pump fake sounds out of the car. The best thing to compare the Taycan’s acceleration sound to? An intergalactic spaceship, and it’s a lot more profound than it seems in the commercial.
With four-wheel drive, two electric motors, and a 93.4-kWh battery pack, the Taycan Turbo S launched to 60 mph in 2.4 seconds during our testing, making it the third-quickest car we have ever tested. It also impressed with a 10.5-second quarter-mile at 130 mph.
