The latest Mercedes-AMG missile aimed at the heart of the super-fast SUV “coupe” segment is this 2021 AMG GLE63 S. Based on the newest GLE-class, this is the version with the sloped roofline and the most powerful engine available: a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 making 603 horsepower and 627 lb-ft.
We’ve already seen and driven the GLE coupe in AMG-tuned GLE53 form, but that model has a less powerful six-cylinder engine and thus doesn’t look nearly as aggressive as this top dog V-8 AMG variant. To back up its huge power, the GLE63 coupe has a mean-looking visual treatment that includes flared fenders, standard 22-inch wheels, a rear diffuser, and of course the requisite AMG GLE63 S badging. This S signifies the extra-high-performance version of the GLE63, and it’ll be the only configuration offered in the U.S. market, like it is with the squareback GLE63 SUV model.
The coupe shares its mechanicals with the SUV, which means a nine-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. Huge brakes—measuring 15.7 inches in front and 14.6 inches in the rear—are on hand, as is an air suspension with a high degree of adjustability. The V-8 engine is complemented by an electric motor-generator that can add a 21-horsepower boost in short spurts. Mercedes claims a zero to 60 mph time of 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 174 mph.
Expect the GLE63 S coupe to carry a price premium over the GLE63 S SUV, which should put its starting price well into the six-figure range.
