- The GV80 is a new mid-size SUV from Hyundai’s luxury brand, Genesis.
- It’s being shown during a Super Bowl ad starring Chrissy Tiegen and John Legend.
- We used the GV80’s online configurator to spec our ideal version of this new model.
Genesis’s first SUV, the GV80, is a big deal. Hyundai initially launched this luxury spinoff brand with a range of sedans, but the mid-size GV80 luxury crossover has the potential to give it some real momentum in the luxury-car market. Genesis is showing how serious it is about this new model by featuring it in a Super Bowl ad starring John Legend and Chrissy Teigen, and the marketing campaign is all about the idea of “young luxury.”
We set out to see exactly how luxurious we could make the GV80 by using the car’s online build-your-own tool to configure our ideal combination. Genesis hasn’t released official pricing information yet but we do have details on the different models, features, colors, and option packages.
MODEL WE’D PICK
- GV80 3.5T AWD
A turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four engine is standard on the GV80, and it comes with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. But power is a luxury, so we’d choose the 375-horsepower twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 engine that comes standard with all-wheel drive. All GV80s come generously equipped with a raft of driver-assistance features, power front seats, a 14.5-inch display screen, and creature comforts such as heated front seats and a power liftgate.
OPTIONS WE’D CHOOSE
- Cardiff Green paint
- Maroon Brown/Smokey Green interior
- Prestige package
The standard features aren’t enough for us, though, so we’d choose the top Prestige package, which adds rich-looking 22-inch wheels, softer nappa leather upholstery inside, and hedonistic extras such as cooled second-row seats and soft-close doors. These options are on top of the goodies included in the lower Advanced package, too, which include an upgraded audio system and a head-up display.
As far as the GV80’s aesthetic, we’re intrigued by the distinct Cardiff Green exterior paint, which is available only on the upper trim levels. Subtle hues such as blue, burgundy, black, silver, and gray are available, too, but they’re not as distinctive as this deep forest green. We also opted for the brown and green interior color scheme to continue the theme inside.
We have it on good authority that even a fully loaded GV80 such as this will cost around $65,000, which makes it a strong value compared to more established luxury SUVs such as the Mercedes-Benz GLE-class or the BMW X5. Perhaps when Genesis says “young luxury” it’s referring to a more affordable and accessible realm of poshness.
