  • The redesigned Jaguar XJ will be an EV-only affair, replacing the gas-powered XJ that was retired this past summer.
  • The vehicle will be built on Jaguar Land Rover’s electrified MLA platform built for EVs and hybrids.
  • The XJ is expected to go on sale sometime this year.

Say goodbye to the gas-powered Jaguar XJ and hello to the electric XJ. The British automaker took great pains to hide as much of the design of the upcoming EV, but this spy photo makes it clear that the vehicle continues the automaker’s history of making sleek sedans.

The redesigned electric XJ will have all-wheel drive and electric motors in front and back. It’s built on Jaguar Land Rover’s Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA)platform, the underpinnings for EVs, plug-in hybrids, and mild hybrids that will be part of every Jag by 2025.

Jaguar executives have said the XJ won’t be a conventional large luxury sedan that’s been electrified. From the outside, it looks like traditional, but inside is where the luxury happens, and we’ll have to wait to see how the British automaker has applied what it has learned from the electric I-Pace to a high-end sedan.

Under the seats, we expect the XJ to carry a 90.0-kWh battery pack. The XJ should also show the fruit of a collaboration with BMW. The automakers penned a deal to collaborate on Electric Drive Units (EDUs) this past summer.

Announced in 2019, the XJ is the second electric vehicle from Jaguar after the I-Pace SUV, which came out of the gate with slow sales. Then as those sales ramped up, battery supply issues slowed production. But that vehicle was very much the result of direction from the top that the automaker have an electrified vehicle on the market sooner rather than later.

We expect to see the electric XJ unveiled and go on sale sometime later this year.
