2020 Audi e-tron Sportback Offers Improved Range, Costs Extra

  • The 2020 Audi e-tron Sportback has an EPA-rated driving range of 218 miles, up from 204 miles for the standard 2019 e-tron.
  • Audi says the battery now uses 91 percent of its capacity, up from 88 percent.
  • The e-tron Sportback starts at $78,395, a few thousand dollars more than the non-Sportback.

The Audi e-tron gets a boost in range for 2020, as the new Sportback model is EPA-rated at 218 miles, up from 204 miles for the 2019 e-tron. This is due to an increase in the amount of usable battery capacity and other efficiency improvements. We also now know that the e-tron Sportback model with its swoopier roofline starts a few thousand dollars higher than the standard e-tron.

While Audi previously said the e-tron used 88 percent of the 95.3-kWh battery pack, it has now increased that number to 91 percent. The increased efficiency also comes from limiting the front motor’s use as well as software tweaks made to the power electronics, thermal management, and regenerative braking. Audi hasn’t yet released information about the non-Sportback 2020 e-tron but says we can expect to see similar improvements for that model.

The e-tron Sportback is mechanically identical to the e-tron and is differentiated only by its more steeply sloped rear hatch. The two-inch lower roofline means it has a bit less rear-seat headroom and cargo space compared with the squareback e-tron, but you’ll pay more for the supposed style quotient. It starts at $78,395 for the Premium Plus model and $84,295 for the better-equipped Prestige; those numbers are $2600 and $4200 higher than the equivalent 2019 non-Sportback e-tron (Audi has not yet released 2020 pricing for the standard model).

The 2020 e-tron Sportback will also be available in a special Edition One model (pictured) that starts at $89,490. It comes painted in a Plasma Blue metallic hue, has five-spoke 21-inch wheels, and offers a unique blue and silver interior color scheme.
