Mahindra KUV100 Electric debuts at Auto Expo 2020 as ‘the most affordable electric compact-SUV’.

As promised earlier, Mahindra & Mahindra has introduced the new KUV100 Electric, aka the eKUV100, at the ongoing Auto Expo 2020. Prices for the EV avatar of the KUV100 start at Rs 8.25 lakh; making it the most affordable electric compact-SUV available in the country at the moment. Prior to the event, the Tata Nexon EV was only the only all-electric sub-four-metre compact-SUV in the Indian market. The KUV100 Electric is part of the Mahindra’s #DrivenByPurpose theme aimed at the future of mobility in the Indian automotive scenario.

Coming to the specifications, the Mahindra eKUV100’s electric motor produces a peak power output of 40kW (roughly 54bhp) and 120Nm of torque. The company claims a range of 147km and practically, the figure could be lesser by around 20km.

On the contrary, the regular Mahindra KUV100 gets a 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol motor that makes 82bhp and 115Nm of torque. In the 1.2-litre diesel avatar, the compact-SUV makes 77bhp and 190Nm.

Mahindra has shared that KUV100 Electric is focused on emission-free daily commutes (especially to work) at a lower cost of ownership. In this regard, the Mahindra eKUV100 has ample output and if one wishes to have more performance, the Mahindra eXUV300 (XUV300 Electric) is available at a higher premium.

The KUV100 Electric supports DC fast-charging. With this equipped, the EV can attain 80% juice from empty in an hour’s time. Normal AC wall-charging could bring up the duration to quite a few hours, but an efficient overnight-charging plan will make up for it.

The Mahindra KUV100 may not have been the most desirable choice in its class, but the new electric model could make a difference. As of now, it has no direct rivals, but quite a few good alternatives including the Tata Nexon EV as well as the higher XUV300 Electric. The Indian automotive industry is still at an infant stage when it comes to the electric-vehicle market, but many important names in the country are coming with some good products as a change.
