Honda Dio is India’s highest exported scooter in 2019.
Honda takes pride in its title of ‘No. 1 scooter exporter from India’. Honda 2Wheelers India reports cumulative exports of 25 lakh units.
The company has surpassed the significant number in its 19th year of operations. Honda 2Wheelers India started exports from India in 2001. The initiative saw the company’s top model, Activa take centre stage. The top selling scooter has done exceptionally well in the domestic market, and is popular overseas as well.
In 2015, in its 15th year of operations, the company reported 10 lakh units exported. As the company’s portfolio widened, Honda 2Wheelers India got additional exports allocation by Honda Motor Co. (Japan). As a result, Honda has been able to export a further 15 lakh vehicles in the subsequent 5 short years. This is at double the growth from the previous comparable period.
In 2020, Honda 2Wheelers India looks to further consolidate its numero uno position in the global motorcycle business. Opportunities arise as the company will now be exporting its portfolio of BSVI bikes. Honda exports to 26 countries from India, and holds a portfolio of 18 two-wheeler export models. Countries where Honda exports most are in Asia, Middle East and Latin America.
Activa was the first scooter exported by Honda.
Honda Activa is the best selling scooter in India. Additionally Honda also holds the title of top scooter exporter overall, while for 2019, it is Dio scooter which was exported the most. Dio is most preferred moto-scooter in Sri Lanka, Mexico, Colombia, Nepal, and other regions. It continues to enjoy its top position of most exported scooter from India. Honda Navi, which has no takers in India enjoys great standing in Guatemala where it’s the No. 1 selling two-wheeler model.
In December 2019, 10,554 units of Honda Dio were exported. The company also exported 1,960 Navi units. Thanks to Dio scooter, Honda commands over 50 percent market share in scooter exports. Honda also exports a wide range of its motorcycles. Export potential from India stands strong with a number of manufacturers highlighting the country’s importance as an ‘export hub’.
Currently, it is Bajaj which is the largest exporter of two wheelers in India. In the motorcycle export business, just last month, 93,168 units of Bajaj Boxer were exported. While Dio exports pale in comparison, they do command top position for scooter exports. Other Honda products in the list of top 30 exported two-wheelers include Honda X Blade, Hornet 160R, CB Shine, Livo and Dream.
