Aprilia SXR 160 launch planned for Q3 2020 after being unveiled at Auto Expo 2020.

Aprilia India, under Piaggio Group, has unveiled the all-new SXR 160 performance maxi-scooter in the Indian market. Sporting a ‘Crossmax Design’, the Aprilia SXR 160 launch is scheduled for the third quarter of this year and will be produced at Piaggio’s Baramati manufacturing facility. Meanwhile, Aprilia SXR 160 bookings will start in August 2020.

The new SXR 160 follows the Italian brand’s “Designed for Racers; Built for Riders” product philosophy. The scooter was designed in Italy and that certainly reflects in the maxi-scooter’s aesthetics. Once launched, the Aprilia SXR 160 will be available in both 160cc as well as a lesser 125cc formats; both boasting of the brand’s 3V Tech FI Engine Technology.

The list of features and technical equipment on the Aprilia SXR 160 range from full-LED lights, raised handlebar, illuminated storage (with USB charging), fully digital instrument console, front disc brake and ABS, 5-spoke 12-inch alloy wheels and dark chrome accents. The scooter will be available in six choices of colours: Red, Blue, White and Black.

The exact specifications of the BS6-compliant engine are yet to be shared. However, we expect it to be a ballpark figure of 12bhp for the 160cc motor and one or two bhp less for the lesser variant; as seen in the trend of the Aprilia SR 150 and SR 125 (which could be cheaper by around Rs 10,000-15,000). One can be sure that the maxi-scooter will be able to touch 100km/h even though it won’t be that effortless.

At present, only the Suzuki Burgman is the only maxi-scooter available on the Indian market. It is essentially an Access 125 with a different body style. The Aprilia SXR 160 would be a premium choice for those who are into maxi-scooters. Expected prices of the Aprilia SXR 160 is in the range of Rs 1-1.15 lakh ex-showroom.

Piaggio India is one of the very few two-wheeler brands/groups that have come to the 15th instalment of the country’s biggest automotive show. This time around, the biennial event is mostly concentrated on the growing EV market and only a few names have interested those who are into conventional ICE vehicles, regardless of the segment.
