    Lloyd Reuss, Former GM President and Early Proponent of EVs, Dies at Age 86

    Starting in 1957, engineer-turned-executive Lloyd Reuss was tied to General Motors for decades and served as its president from 1990 to 1992. His son, Mark, is the current president of GM. During his time at GM, Reuss helped develop GM’s passenger-car models and supported the company’s early electric vehicle project that eventually released the EV1.After leaving GM in 1993, Reuss spent a second career as a champion for various charities, including Focus: Hope in Detroit, which helps local students earn associate and bachelor of engineering degrees. We once called him a visionary. He was “the man who saved the Riviera from oblivion.” He planned to turn Buick from a company that made cushy “doctors’ cars” into a more youthful and exciting brand in the early 1980s. He used money from the then-nascent C5 Corvette development program on a full-size sedan platform that birthed the Pontiac Bonneville, Buick LeSabre, and Oldsmobile 88 in the 1990s. Lloyd Reuss died this weekend at 86. He was the president of General Motors from 1990–1992. He supported the GM Impact, the famously poorly named all-electric concept car that debuted at the 1990 Los Angeles Auto Show and later became the GM EV1.Reuss started work at GM in 1957 and became chief engineer at both Buick and Chevrolet before moving up to the role of Buick general manager in 1980. He kept moving up the ranks: becoming head of GM’s passenger-car groups in North America, then the leader of GM’s North American operations and worldwide automotive components. After his short stint as GM president, Reuss retired from GM in 1993.After leaving the auto industry, Reuss focused on charity work, including Focus: Hope in Detroit, which works to overcome racism, poverty, and injustice. He was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame, which notes that Reuss helped establish the Center for Advanced Technologies (CAT) at Focus: Hope in 1993 and volunteered there for over 20 years. Then and now, CAT’s mission is to teach local students so they can get a college degree in manufacturing engineering tuition-free. In part because of Reuss’s work there, Focus: Hope said GM had given the group over $14 million since 1986. The GM Foundation and the SAE gave the CAT a $500,000 grant.     Top 10 500cc+ Motorcycles March 2023 – Super Meteor Beats 650 Twins

    Big bike sales witnessed a paradigm shift in March 2023. In February 2023, the segment saw a 47.47% YoY decline. RE 650 twins at 52.61% YoY decline. Despite that RE had an 81.14% market share. There is a new champion for 500cc+ motorcycle sales and it is none other than the recently launched RE Super Meteor 650.
    It alone sold 2,293 units with a 55.97% market share. RE 650 Twins (Interceptor and Continental GT 650 combined) sold 1,488 units with 21.37% YoY growth, gaining 262 units in volume. The RE 650 Twins fared better than the previous month with 1,170 units and boast a 36.32% market share. Combined, Royal Enfield enjoys a 92.29% market share. First time for RE.
    500cc+ motorcycle sales March 2023
    In third place, we have the Kawasaki Z900, the least expensive 4-cylinder motorcycle in India. It sold 63 units and registered a hefty 530% YoY growth as opposed to 10 units sold a year ago. Triumph Tiger 900 takes 4th spot with 41 units sold. It gained 156.25% YoY. Kawasaki Ninja 650 and ZX-10R sold 32 and 31 units and both of them saw a 3.03% and 34.04% YoY decline respectively.
    Ninja 1000 saw a similar pattern too with 20 units sold last month and shrunk by 64.91% YoY in sales. ZX-10R lost 16 units YoY and Ninja 1000 SX lost 37 units YoY. Kawasaki Z650 and Versys 1000 fared much better. They saw 13 and 12 units sold in their names and registered 116.6% and 20% YoY growth respectively. Triumph Rocket III has the largest capacity motorcycle engine in the world and enjoys quite a fan following. Despite that, it managed to sell 12 units and witnessed a 7.69% decline YoY.

    Kawasaki Vulcan S, Triumph Trident, Speed Twin and Tiger 1200 sold 9 units each. Only the Kawasaki Vulcan S saw positive growth of 125% YoY. Triumph Tiger Sport 660 is the only motorcycle on this list to sell 7 units. It saw a decline of 69.57% as opposed to 23 units sold a year ago. Suzuki Hayabusa and Harley-Davidson Sportster S sold 5 units each.
    Harley saw 400% YoY growth and Hayabusa sales declined YoY by 28.57%. Hayabusa was the third-highest seller on this list just last month. Suzuki Katana, Triumph Bonneville T120, Speed Twin and Harley-Davidson Fat Boy 114 sold 4 units each, with no growth to report. The Supercharged Kawasaki Z H2 and Harley-Davidson Heritage Classic sold 3 units each. Kawasaki Z650 RS, Triumph Street Scrambler, Bonneville Speedmaster, Speed Triple, Harley-Davidson Fat Bob and Road Glide sold 2 units each. Kawasaki Versys 650, Triumph Street Triple and Bonneville Bobber sold 1 unit each.
    Honda needs more appealing Big-Bikes, pronto!
    Triumph Street Twin, Bonneville T100, Harley-Davidson Pan America, Standard, Street Glide, 883 Iron, Street Bob, Aprilia RSV4 Factory, Tuono and Suzuki V-Strom 650 sold 0 units. Surprisingly, Honda contributed 0 units to this segment. Africa Twin, CBR650R, CBR 1000RR-R, Goldwing and others sold 0 units.
    In total, the 500cc+ motorcycle sales chart for the month March 2023 saw 4,097 units sold with 153.06% YoY growth as opposed to 1,619 units sold in March 2022. Volume gain stood at 2,478 units. Yamaha will soon join the brigade with YZF-R7, MT-07 and MT-09. More

    The South Korean brand launched Ioniq 5 in India some time ago and deliveries for the same have now commenced. First ever Ioniq 5 was delivered to its owner in Bangalore, by Blue Hyundai dealership. Ioniq 5 introductory price for first 500 customers is Rs. 44.95 lakh (ex-sh).
    Pricing makes all the difference in a market like India. Hyundai Ioniq 5 is a unique offering at Rs. 44.95 lakh (ex-sh, introductory). At this price, it undercuts Kia EV6 and Volvo XC40 Recharge with comparable ethos and battery sizes. Hyundai has achieved this by offering only a single motor RWD variant and a smaller 72.6 kWh battery as opposed to a 77.4 kWh battery with up to dual motor setups on Kia EV6.

    The South Korean brand has launched Ioniq 5 in one fully-loaded variant. It shares most of its EV powertrain with Kia EV6. In terms of pricing, Ioniq 5 undercuts its Kia counterpart by quite some margin. It is one of the most well-received and critically acclaimed EVs in the world. It features a neo-retro design language, unlike anything else on the market. These were some of the thoughts in the mind of the first owner, Mr. Harshith M B.
    At the time of taking delivery, Mr. Harshith M B said that he had been wanting to own this car since the day it was launched in South Korea and he is now very happy that he is the first owner of Ioniq 5 in India.     Numbers for Hyundai Ioniq 5 are 217 bhp of power and 350 Nm of torque, while Kia EV6 can go till 325 bhp of power and 605 Nm of torque with dual motor AWD config. Ioniq 5 can travel 631 km (claimed) on a single charge. The 800V e-GMP architecture enables 350 kW of fast charging with claimed 10 – 80% charge in 18 minutes.
    In India, 50 kW DC chargers are plenty and those will take 10 – 80% in 57 minutes. Another key strategy for Hyundai’s competitive pricing is the way Ioniq 5 is brought into the country. Hyundai imports Ioniq 5 via CKD route (Completely Knocked Down) with lesser 15% duties. In comparison, Kia EV6 attracts up to 60% duties as it takes a CBU route (Completely Built Unit). For reference, Kia EV6 currently costs between Rs. 64.5 – 69.7 lakh (ex-sh).
    The Neo Retro Charm
    Hyundai Ioniq 5 is a stunning machine. It gets squarish LED signatures with a sleek headlight design. The sides are fairly handsome as well and at the rear, pixelated LED tail lights grab attention. Reminds me of a Delorean. On the inside, two 12.3” horizontal displays take center stage.

    Interiors are minimalistic and with fewer buttons. A two-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel with perfect 9 and 3 positions looks neat. Hyundai logo on the inside is replaced with four dots, adhering to recent trends in the company’s portfolio. Hyundai Ioniq 5 is a fairly large vehicle with immaculate proportions.
    It is a 4635 mm long, 1890 mm wide, 1625 mm tall vehicle and has a 3000 mm long wheelbase. It has a 531L boot space but lacks a front luggage area.     During our visit to the manufacturing facility in Ranipet, Tamil Nadu, we had the opportunity to take the Ampere Primus electric scooter for a spin. Primus is the flagship model recently launched by Ampere by Greaves Cotton Ltd. at a launch price of Rs 1.10 lakhs ex-showroom. After our ride experience, we have mixed feelings about the scooter. Moreso in terms of trying to understand which demographic this model is targeting. In this review, we share our experience of spending half a day with the Primus and welcome your thoughts on it.
    In my opinion, the Ampere Primus is a well-built, and well-sized scooter. The older you are, the more well-groomed an option it seems. That being said, it may not appeal to the younger generation, the way some of the trendy scooters like Ather or Ola S1 do. Comparing the Primus to such models would be like comparing apples with oranges, as the Primus has its own set of features that cater to a different demographic.

But even such users would expect a disc brake at the front. Especially after test riding the Primus, and experiencing the delay in halting even after clutching both the spongy levers to the fullest.
    Its practical performance is definitely admirable. The e-scooter won’t leave you disappointed or stranded in the middle of an overtake. Performance, whether solo or with a pillion, is more than enough to ride without worrying about maxing out at any time in power mode, whether in dense traffic or on an open road. Eco and City modes are functional and convenient to use.

    What Makes the Ampere Primus Stand Out in the Electric Scooter Market?
    Primus claims to do 0-40 kmph in a matter of 4.2 seconds and has a rated top speed of 77 kmph. However, during our test ride on a clean stretch of highway, the speedometer showed well past 85 kmph. And it reached that speed quite effortlessly.
    The 4kW mid-mounted motor is the prime mover of the Primus. This is connected to the rear wheel via belt drive. Surprisingly, it’s also remarkably quiet. It took a while to realize that the vehicle is quietly efficient at both low and higher speeds. Ampere emits a relatively subtle sound, unlike some other e-scooters such as the Ather that have a distinctive sci-fi-like hum.

    Ampere Primus: Battery Performance
    Powering the Primus motor is a 3 kWh LFP non-removable battery, which is a Lithium Iron Phosphate / Lithium Ferro Phosphate variant of the well-known Lithium-ion battery. This type of battery is known for its safety and longer lifespan, as it has a much lower tendency to overheat or cause thermal mishaps. In fact, it has a longer life cycle compared to standard Li-ion batteries. This means that riders may not have to change the battery even after years of regular usage. However, it is worth noting that the company hasn’t provided a long warranty period for the battery, which is something to consider.
    Primus takes approximately 5 hours to charge from 0-100 percent with the included 15A charger. If you prefer faster charging, you can purchase a 25A charger from Ampere separately. This can charge the scooter in just 2.5 hours from 0-100 percent. The battery is capable of providing an ARAI-certified range of 107 km in ECO mode at full charge. In real world riding, you can expect a range of around 70-80 km while switching between City and Power modes. Additionally, the scooter has a dedicated Reverse button, which can be used by pushing it after coming to a complete halt. This, while simultaneously giving throttle as usual to make the scooter move backward, albeit at a slower pace.

    Ampere Primus: A Practical and Efficient Mode of Transportation
    Another accolade that the Ampere Primus deserves is for its impressive ride quality. Despite the suspension being on the stiffer side, the ride is well balanced between comfort on rough roads, and handling on smoother ones. The e-scooter has an expansive footboard, a sizeable seat, well-positioned and large mirrors, slightly forward-set handlebars, and provides a smooth ride, making it an excellent choice for families.
    Underseat storage is quite decent at a capacity of 22-litres. But it is mostly occupied by the jumbo-sized 15A charger. Even without the charger, the space cannot accommodate a full-face helmet. This may not be preferred by those using a full face helmet. It appears that a half-faced helmet can fit comfortably.

    Ampere Primus: Should You Choose It Over Other Electric Scooters?
    Overall, the Ampere team deserves appreciation for their efforts in developing their first indigenous scooter. Taking it from paper sketch to sales brochure within 12 months. Having ridden Ampere’s earlier models, we can say that they have made significant improvements in terms of build quality, fit and finish, and overall product design. However, Primus is not yet competitive in pricing compared to established players who have better technology and more attractive designs. With the e-scooter market attracting faster and higher volumes of competition than ICE scooters ever had, we hope to see Ampere improve their engineering game or pricing strategy to sustain their market position in the coming years.
    To conclude, if you’re buying an electric scooter, test ride the Ampere Primus before considering any other options. Its impressive acceleration and top speed, longer battery life-cycle, and comfortable ride quality make it a compelling option. While it may not be as competitively priced as some of its rivals, its build quality and overall product offering are still impressive, and it may be worth the investment in the long run. More

    With exceptional power : weight ratio and price : performance ratio, KTM 390 Duke is in a league of its own. This is the bike’s main draw. For 90% of the world’s motorcycle enthusiasts, this is capable of being the only motorcycle in their garage.     This is not the first time a new 390 Duke is spotted. We have seen camouflaged test mules regularly. But this is the first time that an undisguised photo of the new gen Duke 390 has been shared. This sheds new light on the motorcycle allowing us to get a better understanding of the design and equipment on offer.
    Even though the design has seen some changes, it still looks unmistakably like a KTM product. 2024 Duke 390 is sporting orange-coloured wheels with blue colour shade on the tank. KTM might offer white wheel colour, depending on a multitude of colourways. The next obvious design change is the subframe. It looks like it was heavily inspired by its bigger siblings like 790 or 890 Duke.

    Alloy wheels and front disc rotors are new. Rotors are now mounted directly to the alloy wheels. Calipers are radially mounted too. WP USD front forks are likely to be retained. Engine casing is new too, which is a clear indication of a new engine architecture.
    Earlier spy shots revealed that the swingarm is new, rear suspension duties are now tasked to an off-set mono-shock unit and there is a new tail light design. Other notable features include an underbelly exhaust, sharper headlight design, and large angular tank shrouds that extend to the front suspension giving it a lot of muscle to flex on its competition.

    The new KTM 390 Duke is expected to displace close to 373 cc as before. It will be a single-cylinder oil-cooled unit making around 45 bhp and 40 Nm of torque as opposed to the outgoing model’s 42.9 bhp and 37 Nm. Weight can go up slightly as opposed to the 172 kg of the outgoing model.
    The 390 Duke is a very popular motorcycle around the world. New 390 Duke is expected to pack in an even more impressive power : weight ratio than before. We also expect improved electronics and driver aids along with a quick shifter, a larger fuel tank, improved traction, larger brakes, new infotainment display with more features, etc. When launched, it will compete with BMW G310R and Honda CB300R. Launch is likely to happen in the coming months. 2024 KTM Duke 390 prices are likely to remain same as current 390 Duke, in the Rs 3.2 lakh ex-sh range.

    In keeping with its four motorcycles per year strategy, Royal Enfield has a lot on its hands right now. Starting from the lower end, the Chennai-based bikemaker is testing a new Bullet 350, Himalayan 450, Scrambler 450, Himalayan 650, Scram 650, Royal Enfield Shotgun 650, etc
    After launching Super Meteor 650, updated Interceptor 650 and 650 GT earlier this year, Royal Enfield seems to be strengthening its 650cc portfolio with another offering. That is Shotgun 650. There have been multiple test mules of that in 2022, but got less frequent after that. Recently, a near-production version of Shotgun 650 was spotted testing on road. Is this a hint for an imminent launch? Let’s take a look.

    Shotgun 650 was first showcased as a stunning concept at EICMA 2021 and ever since, has been a highly anticipated bike from the marque. It has been attracting a lot of eyeballs from general consensus and celebrities alike, including Fast & Furious fame Sung Kang. It is so, because of how attractive the concept looked.
    The near-production test mule spotted recently, retains much of the concept’s look. Which is a good thing. This RE motorcycle looks muscular all along. One can say that it resembles very closely to the recently launched Super Meteor as well. Sure, Royal Enfield will keep componentry like front USD forks, rear twin shocks, headlights, instrument cluster and most things. Video is credited to Kshitij.

    Owing to different characters, there will be differences as well. Even though headlights are similar, Shotgun 650 gets a different headlight housing, made of machined aluminium like on Scram 411. Fuel tank is different, and so is the rear section. Tail light housings might be similar, but on Shotgun 650 test mules, turn indicators are closer to tail light than in Super Meteor.

    Riding position looks more relaxed, lending Shotgun 650 a different rider triangle. Test mule features alloy wheels, Royal Enfield Shotgun 650 won’t be getting 19” front and 16” rear as we saw with Super Meteor. When launched, Royal Enfield is likely to offer a single-seat option as well.

    Hyundai Targets Being in ‘Top 3’ of EV Makers with 3.6 Million Sales by 2030

    Hyundai sold just under 4 million vehicles in 2022, but big changes are looming as the parent company aims high in the EV world.Hyundai wants to be a “top three EV manufacturer” in 2030, but exactly how the company is defining that list is vague.What we can say is that if the Hyundai Motor Group wants to sell 3.6 million EVs in 2030, it’s going to have to put in the work. The competition will not be resting.The Hyundai Motor Group wants to move on up in the world. The Korean company is objectively winning the “How ’bout these cool electric vehicles?” challenge all the automakers are playing these days, but it wants more. Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) announced earlier this month that it wants to be a “Top 3 EV manufacturer” by 2030. Exactly what that means is a bit difficult to define, and even Hyundai isn’t willing to say publicly which companies it is targeting. Tesla is obviously the world’s number-one EV company, but they’re not alone. Will Hyundai include China-only domestic brands, especially companies like the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC Motors) that sell their fair share of city EVs? Or does Hyundai want to be considered in the top three, no matter which companies you look at? Who Even Are the Top Three?We asked whom Hyundai considers its competition here, but HMG spokesperson Seoyong Choi told Car and Driver, “We do not comment on other automakers.” Choi did say that the company will measure the “global top three” EV sales company goal as including both passenger cars and commercial vehicles from HMG’s three brands: Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis. HMG will offer more than 30 EV models in 2030.So, instead, let’s look at the overall EV sales numbers. To put them in perspective and appreciate the magnitude of Hyundai’s plans, let’s take stock of where things are today. Globally, sales of plug-in vehicles dramatically increased in 2021, with total sales of EVs and PHEVs roughly doubling from their 2020 numbers. Despite the start of the pandemic, annual EV sales in 2020 were relatively stable compared with the preceding years, according to International Energy Agency data. Roughly 2.7 million EVs were sold in China in 2021, almost half a million in the U.S., and 1.2 million in Europe. Choi said that HMG plans to produce and sell 3.6 million EVs around the world in 2030. The Hyundai brand sold 3.9 million vehicles, of all powertrain types, in 2022 and expects to sell 4.3 million vehicles in 2023.2023 Tesla Model 3.TeslaTesla Is Still on TopWhat about Hyundai’s competition? The global EV leader, Tesla, sold 1.3 million vehicles in 2022, and despite the continued news surrounding CEO Elon Musk’s actions over at Twitter, Tesla sales remain strong. Given Musk’s behaviors, we won’t predict where things will stand in 2030, but no one should expect Tesla to fade away. Ford, GM, and Volkswagen have all made big strides in their EV game in recent years, with VW saying it wants half of its sales to be electric by 2030. VW sold 4.5 million vehicles in 2022. We’re also still waiting to see where Chinese companies with international ambitions like BYD might land between now and the end of the decade. 2023 Kia Niro EV.Marc Urbano|Car and DriverMade in Korea—and in U.S.Selling more EVs will require building new EV plants or expanding those operating today, but Choi wouldn’t say how many new plants could still be announced and constructed in time for the 2030 deadline. HMG did say it will spend $18 billion to expand the EV sector in Korea, including money for new plants, and that it expects 1.5 million of the 3.6 million EVs HMG will build and sell in 2030 will be made in Korea. In 2022, HMG announced a new plant dedicated to building purpose-built EVs like the Niro Plus, an electric model that will be used as both a general model and a zero-emission taxi in Korea.Gearing UpIn the U.S., Hyundai broke ground on a new EV plant in Georgia last October and said it would be able to produce up to 500,000 EVs a year. It seems like HMG will need to expand capacity somewhere to hit the “Top 3” target, but all Choi would say is, “We are reviewing various scenarios to respond flexibly to the market situation.” Hyundai will also be a bit more flexible when it comes to vehicle design thanks to a next-generation, dedicated passenger EV platform called eM, which will be introduced in 2025, that fits inside Hyundai’s Integrated Modular Architecture (IMA) system.
