    2021 Suzuki GSX250R Debuts With New Colour – Price USD 5.5k (Rs 4 L)

    2021 Suzuki GSX250R
2021 GSX250R is unlikely to make it to India since we already have the more affordable Gixxer SF 250

Suzuki has revealed its entire lineup for 2021 and this includes its quarter-litre faired sports bike GSX250R. The only major upgrade is the addition of a new colour scheme, the GSX250R will now be available in a white and black paint scheme. The full black colour scheme has been carried forward as well.
Other than this, there are no updates in the latest iteration of the quarter-litre motorcycle. The motorcycle has been priced at USD 5,499 (equivalent to INR 4.06 lakh) in the US market. Unlike the previous edition, the current model will only be available in one variant, i.e., ABS variant.
    Design & Features
It gets identical specs and features from the outgoing model. It continues to sport muscular styling thanks to its fully-faired design. The front of the motorcycle features unique dual LED headlights, angular fairing-mounted mirrors, and an effective sport windshield that incorporates slots to reduce continuous wind lashing. At rear, it gets a sharper tail with an LED taillight which reminds us of the larger GSX-R1000R.
It gets signature sporty elements which include split-style seats and clip-on handlebars although they are fairly high. Footpegs are lower than usual, therefore, the seating position is relatively roomy and relaxed.
    2021 Suzuki GSX250R
Additionally, the front and rear turn indicators have been equipped with clear lenses that add to their stylish appearance. Overall, even though the bike tries to be aggressive it is a fairly neat and easy to go design.
In terms of features, the GSX250R is offered with a reverse-lit LCD instrumentation which displays a wide array of information such as a bar-graph tachometer, speedometer, odometer gear position indicator and more. Suspension setup consists of conventional telescopic forks at front and a mono-shock at rear from KYB. It receives disc brakes on both ends assisted by dual-channel ABS.

    Powertrain
Coming to its performance, it is powered by a 248cc parallel-twin liquid-cooled motor which is also used in Suzuki’s tourer Inazuma. This unit is paired with a six-speed gearbox. Output figures of 24 PS of power and 21.6 Nm of peak torque aren’t the greatest in this segment. For reference, it gets trumped by a smaller Duke 200 which receives an output of 25.83 PS and 19.5 Nm. This is probably because Suzuki has designed this bike keeping in mind beginners and younger riders.
At around Rs 4.0 lakh, it makes very less sense for a quarter-litre motorcycle in India. In a budget centric market like India, Suzuki is better off selling more value for money bike in the form of single cylinder Gixxer 250 and Gixxer SF 250. More

Bajaj To Setup New Plant To Manufacture Chetak And Upcoming KTM, Triumph, Husqvarna Motorcycles

    Bajaj Triumph Motorcycle Render
The new manufacturing unit is set to come up at an investment of Rs.650 crores

Bajaj Auto Limited has announced its intention to set up a new plant in Chakan industrial area of Pune in Maharashtra. The company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Maharashtra and production is set to commence by 2023.
    KTM, Husqvarna and Triumph bikes
As per rules and regulations of the Government, Bajaj Auto will go ahead with obtaining necessary permissions and registrations, approvals and clearances from the respective departments in the state. The facility is expected to commence production by 2023 and will focus particularly on production of high end KTM, Husqvarna and Triumph bikes.
The company also plans to shift production of the Chetak electric scooter to this new plant while plans are afoot to introduce other electric vehicles into the country. A few weeks ago, Mr Bajaj had stated that he was looking to setup a new plant outside Maharashtra as the conditions in the state were not favourable.
Bajaj Auto holds a 48 percent share in KTM and in Feb 2020 also introduced Husqvarna, also a part of the KTM Group, into the country. Bajaj Auto has also entered into a partnership with Triumph earlier this year for the production of its 200 to 750 cc range of motorcycles for both Indian and global markets.
Bajaj Chetak – Old vs New
    Production Boost A Must
From total sales of 2.80 lakh units clocked in 2019, KTM expects to double this count of two wheeler sales in 2022. This would mean doubling production at the Bajaj Auto Chakan plant to around 4 lakh units from a current 1.08 lakh units as on date. This would include joint products of the KTM and Husqvarna brands and KTM products distributed by Bajaj on license fee.
The two companies have started work on electric two wheelers, the first of which will have power range of 3-10 kW and which will roll off the Chakan production lines. KTM is also developing a 4 kW electric scooter under the Husqvarna brand and this will be followed by the launch of the Husqvarna E-Pilen fully electric motorcycle with modular battery system with launch date set for 2022.
    Target for Increased Market Share
Rajiv Bajaj is targeting increased market share of 20-25 percent over the next 12 months and hints that the electric scooter or motorcycle segments would be an attractive space to be in.
Bajaj Auto is celebrating its 75th year of operations in Maharashtra this year. The company has noted outstanding demand for the new Chetak electric scooter and now plans to enter the three wheeler electric space by mid 2021. This will be followed by an electric quadricycle and a performance electric motorcycle which the company is developing along with its Austrian partner KTM. More

Ather Electric Scooter Production Set To Increase – Thanks To New Hosur Plant

Ather Electric Scooter Production Ends At Bangalore Plant
In order to expand its presence across the country, Ather needs to scale up its production considerably to meet required demands

At a time when most electric vehicles (EV) related technologies were foreign and barely within access, Ather Energy, an Indian startup, provided the necessary momentum to the EV segment in India by developing technologies and manufacturing vehicles on its own. Backed by big corporate houses such as Hero MotoCorp and Flipkart, the brand has come a long way in the Indian automotive scene.
The company started its production at a facility based out of Bangalore and will now shift to Hosur in Tamil Nadu. Spread across 4,00,000 square feet, Ather hopes that this new plant in Hosur will produce 1,00,000 units of electric two-wheelers annually in the coming years.
    Enhanced Production Capacity
Sharing a picture on his Twitter handle, Tarun Mehta, Co-founder and CEO of Ather Energy, said the new facility will drastically increase rate of production. With this new manufacturing facility, Ather can transit from a startup to an established two-wheeler brand in the EV segment in India. The company currently has 450X and 450 Plus in its product portfolio.
Recently, the last batch of Ather 450 rolled out of its facility in Whitefield outside Bangalore before being discontinued altogether. The low sales volume of 450 was a result of a combination of lack of availability, high pricing and sparse charging network.
    Tweet from Ather CEO
Ather launched the 450 initially in just two cities- Bangalore and Chennai. Ather 450X and 450 Plus will be made available across 27 cities in the country by late 2021. This should help the manufacturer reach its target sales volume.
Setting up a new facility will help Ather ramp up production to 3,000 units per month initially and then increase it to 8,000 units per month by the first half of next year. Initially, Ather averaged just 300 units from its Bangalore facility.
Besides manufacturing electric scooters, Ather will also focus on developing batteries, with imported Lithium-Ion cells at the site. The same facility will also be used to develop Ather’s first electric motorcycle although it is still some time away.
Benefits Enjoyed By EVs in Tamil Nadu
Further, relocating the facility to Tamil Nadu will make the company eligible for all the benefits as per the state’s EV policy. This will enable Ather to enjoy benefit such as 100% exemptions on electricity tax to all EV related industries in the state, till 31st December 2025. Alongside, companies are also entitled to stamp duty exemption for the purchase of land to set up factories.
Ather recently started deliveries of 450X last month. The scooter was launched earlier in January this year and has been priced at Rs 1.59 lakh (ex-showroom). The 450X is powered by a 2.6 kWh lithium-ion battery pack which is paired with an electric motor generating 6kW/28 Nm and can return a single-charge range of 116 km. More

Electric 2W Sales In India Expected To Decline In FY2021 – ICRA

    File photo
Under FAME-II scheme’s three-year tenure, FY2020-FY2022, e-2W sales realised are at a dismal 2 percent of the targeted 10 lakh units

While dialogues around electric vehicles continue to pepper through, sales and demand for EVs isn’t that great yet. This, despite government’s thrust on adoption of electric vehicles (EV). No doubt Covid-19 pandemic had a bearing on industry performance in 2020.
But outlook for e-2W remains largely unchanged in FY21 owing to a low base. A survey across 16 e-2W dealerships in November 2020 reveals that stringent eligibility criteria for subsidy claim under FAME-II has been a deterrent. This is attributed to minimum localisation requirement, and exclusion of lead-acid based e-2W.
Consumer awareness (regarding Government subsidy) is lacking. FAME-II designed to propel faster electric vehicle (EV) adoption is in a mid phase of its 3-year tenure (FY2020-FY2022). As of September 30, 2020, it has achieved a paltry 2 percent of its target (out of covering 10 lakh e-2Ws) sales for said period.
Shamsher Dewan, Vice-President, ICRA, says, “While the e-2W sales reported a 21% Y-o-Y growth to 1.5 lakh units in FY2020 (first year of scheme) the number of e-2Ws which availed FAME-II subsidy plummeted.”
    File photo
    ICRA research findings
About 50 percent dealers say e-2W sales declined post FAME-II. Models eligible for subsidy under FAME II are fewer. e-2W with advanced (i.e. Lithium-ion battery based) are eligible. As such, lead-acid battery- based e-2W sales (about 70 percent of models available) are excluded from incentive claims.
Manufacturers are required to meet a minimum 50 percent localised content criterion in a phased manner. This is difficult as a Li-ion battery accounts for 40-50 percent of overall EV cost. Inadequate domestic supply means most OEMs are importing the same. Thus excluding them from subsidy claim eligibility.
A third of walk-in customers are unaware of financial incentives offered by the Government. The rest have limited understanding. Potential customers have concerns regarding upfront cost of a e-2W, durability and after sales services. Majority of dealers indicated that customers on the lookout for such a bike are mostly in search for a second 2W. With schools and college terms suspended at present, such purchases are deferred.
Electric two wheeler sales for FY21
Buyers prefer low cost-low range lead-acid battery powered e-2Ws even though FAME-II incentives aren’t available for them. Such scooters are exempt from RTO reg, driving licence and helmet. About 60 percent customers opt for lead-acid based vehicles as their upfront costs are lower than Li-ion powered e-2Ws.
High-speed e-2W sales declined 25 percent Y-o-Y through H1 FY2021, primarily owing to pandemic-led lockdowns. September 2020 saw sales growth of 72 percent Y-o-Y. EV policies announced by states and Union Territories, and Central Government’s decision to allow sale of EVs without battery could augment growth.
ICRA expects 15-17 percent Y-o-Y contraction in domestic 2W volumes in FY2021. In H1 FY2021, 2W wholesale sales volumes was 38 percent lower on a Y-o-Y basis. e-2W sales account for less than 1 percent of total two-wheelers (2W) sold in FY2020 in India. More

Aprilia SXR 160 Rendered As Electric Scooter – Could This Be eSR1?

Aprilia SXR 160 Based Electric Scooter Render
Aprilia eSR1 electric scooter could draw major design inspirations from petrol-powered SXR 160

The Indian market has been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Aprilia SXR 160, mainly because it will be the first proper maxi-style scooter in India. Definitely, Suzuki Burgman also follows a similar styling pattern, but SXR 160 clearly ticks more criteria for a power Maxi scooter.
Recently, a few days ago the Italian two-wheeler brand started accepting bookings for the upcoming power scooter at a token amount of Rs 5000. The company said that deliveries of the e-scooter will commence soon.
Dealerships already have the scooter in showroom, while customers have started taking test rides. Though not yet launched officially, dealer sources state that price is Rs 1.3 lakh ex-sh for the Aprilia SXR 160. While we wait for its official launch, design renders of SXR 160 as an electric scooter has surfaced online.
We already know that a new electric scooter from Piaggio is certainly on cards in future as the company recently filed a trademark named ‘eSR1’. It is, therefore, no harm in imagining SXR 160 with an electric powertrain given that it is the latest offering from Piaggio group and might serve as a design inspiration for the upcoming eSR1.
    Aprilia SXR 160 in showroom
    Rendered Design
Design-wise, as shown in the images, the electric SXR 160 is identical to its petrol-powered counterpart. It receives the same set of a big LED headlamps with integrated LED DRLs which give a modern and refreshing look to its front face. The designer has also carried over the large and comfortable seat from the regular SXR 160. Even hardware setup such as the front telescopic fork and alloy wheels along with disc brakes on both ends have been carried over.
The distinguishing highlight though is the bright colour scheme and body graphics. A white paint job along with subtle blue graphics in front fairing, headlamps and rear cowl makes for a tasteful look. Alloy wheel rims also feature thick blue pinstripes while the rear cowl flaunts black graphics enhance its sporty appeal. Aprilia branding in black background is seen beneath the floorboard.
This design renders also showcases a slightly different rear wheel hub from the regular SXR 160, similar to the one in Vespa Elettrica prototype showcased at the AutoExpo 2020. The image also shows a wall-mounted charger which could be used to juice up the battery of the scooter.
Aprilia eSR1 based on Vespa Elettrica
It was recently reported that Piaggio has trademarked the name ‘eSR1’ in India which could be the company’s next e-scooter offering through its Aprilia brand of two-wheelers. This scooter might well use the technology and powertrain of Vespa Elettrica since it is a common practice among brands under Piaggio. This would also save them time and extra capital required to invest in new technology.
If indeed that is the case, then eSR1 could use a 4kW electric motor paired with a lithium-ion battery pack to power itself. This powertrain will provide a peak torque of 200 Nm at wheels and a single-charge range of 70 km in power mode and 100 km in Eco mode.
