BYD Denza N9 SUV Patented In India

After the brand’s re-launch in 2022, BYD Denza N9 is positioned as the flagship SUV above N7 and N8 with both PHEV and EV powertrains

Denza, a subsidiary brand of BYD, recently unveiled their new flagship SUV at Guangzhou Auto Show. Called Denza N9, this flagship SUV is a culmination of BYD’s efforts to re-establish Denza as a luxurious brand. This flagship SUV was recently patented in India, suggesting launch intentions from the brand to rival Kia EV9.

BYD Denza N9

Denza was jointly founded by Daimler and BYD (50:50) in 2011. BYD increased its stake in the company to 90% in 2022 and 100% in 2024. After rather uninspiring operations, BYD re-launched Denza brand in 2022 with D9 MPV as the first offering from this refreshed brand. Since then, Denza has launched N7 SUV and N8 SUV in 2023 and Z9 GT in September 2024.

Now, the company has unveiled N9 flagship SUV and even showcased it at Guangzhou Auto Show in November 2024. This is a large flagship SUV that is yet to launch in China. There is a Plug-In Hybrid version of this SUV and a fully-electric version too, making it a versatile option to launch in many global markets.

But considering BYD has bothered to patent the design of this SUV in India, we think there is a launch probability. Especially given the recent trends where we are seeing more and more premium and luxury car launches in India. We can see BYD Denza N9 as a viable SUV for India priced around Rs 1 crore, undercutting Kia EV9. Or it could just be a IP protection exercise.

Chinese MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) has revealed the dimensions of BYD Denza N9 PHEV at 5,258 mm long, 2,030 mm wide, 1,830 mm tall and has a wheelbase of 3,125 mm. This large flagship SUV comes equipped with everything one can think of and has a kerb weight between 3,130 kg and 3,245 kg.

The PHEV version comes equipped with a 2.0L IC engine that is capable of 205 PS, charging an electric battery pack with 47 kWh worth of capacity. This is BYD’s proprietary Li-Fe-Po Blade Battery promising an all-electric range of 165 km. This battery powers two electric motors for a total system output of 911 bhp and a top speed of 230 km/h.

Stately Design!

As seen in the design patent in India, BYD Denza N9 SUV gets a stately design, which is very imposing to look at with excellent road presence. Especially with the optional 22-inch wheels. On the inside, there’s a 2+2+2 seating layout along with a 50-inch HUD, 17.3-inch touchscreen infotainment screen, a 13.2-inch screen for driver instrumentation and a 13.2-inch touch screen for front passenger.

It comes with all the features and creature comforts that could rival a full-size Range Rover. BYD India has not confirmed the launch of Denza N9 in the Asian subcontinent.
