Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the third-generation GLA, marking a major shift for its entry-level luxury SUV. For the first time, GLA is available as a fully electric model, while a new mild-hybrid petrol version has also been confirmed for a later launch. Built on Mercedes-Benz’s new MMA (Mercedes Modular Architecture) platform, the new GLA is larger than before, offers significantly more technology and introduces faster charging capabilities.
First-Ever Electric Mercedes GLA
The all-electric GLA will go on sale first in international markets, with the mild-hybrid petrol version expected to follow in 2027. It will be offered in three variants – GLA 250, GLA 250+ and GLA 350 4MATIC. The entry-level GLA 250 uses a 58 kWh LFP battery pack and offers a claimed WLTP range of up to 447 km.
Higher-spec GLA 250+ and GLA 350 4MATIC get a larger 85 kWh NMC battery pack. Mercedes claims a maximum WLTP range of up to 657 km with the GLA 250+, while the dual-motor GLA 350 4MATIC combines 354 hp and 515 Nm with all-wheel drive. It can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in a claimed 5.4 seconds.
The new EV architecture also supports 800V electrical technology. Using a 320 kW DC fast charger, Mercedes says the GLA can add up to 270 km of driving range in just 10 minutes. AC charging speeds of up to 22 kW are also supported. Mercedes has also confirmed that a 71 kWh battery option will join the range in 2027.
Hybrid Version Confirmed
Mercedes has confirmed that a new mild-hybrid petrol version of GLA will arrive in 2027. It will be powered by the company’s newly developed 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system and an electrified eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. Buyers will have the choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, although power and torque figures are yet to be announced.
Larger And More Practical
Compared to its predecessor, the new GLA has grown in size. It now measures 4,565 mm in length, making it 153 mm longer than before, while the wheelbase has increased by 61 mm to 2,790 mm. Width has increased by 39 mm as well. The larger footprint translates into improved cabin space and practicality. Boot capacity now stands at 410 litres, while the electric version also gets a 107-litre front storage compartment (frunk), a first for GLA.
Fresh Design And Tech-Focused Cabin
The third-generation GLA adopts Mercedes-Benz’s latest SUV design language with a more upright stance. The electric version gets a closed illuminated grille with LED detailing, while the hybrid model features a more conventional star-pattern grille. New star-shaped LED daytime running lights, redesigned bumpers and connected LED tail lamps further distinguish the new model.
Inside, the dashboard receives a major overhaul. Buyers can opt for Mercedes-Benz’s new MBUX Superscreen setup that combines a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster with two 14-inch displays for infotainment and the front passenger. Standard versions instead feature an illuminated decorative panel in place of the passenger display.
Other highlights include physical steering wheel buttons, a panoramic sunroof, 64-colour ambient lighting, Burmester 3D surround sound system, 360-degree camera with transparent bonnet function and automated parking assistance.
India Launch
Mercedes-Benz currently sells the second-generation GLA in India with petrol and diesel engine options, priced from Rs 51.80 lakh (ex-showroom). While the company has not announced plans for the new-generation model in India, the all-electric GLA and the new mild-hybrid version are expected to be considered for the market at a later stage.
