Yamaha has launched the new YZF-R2 in India, expanding its supersport portfolio with three variants. Prices start at Rs 2,30,500 for the standard R2, while the Quick Shifter variant costs Rs 2,39,500. Flagship Yamaha R2M has been priced at Rs 2,53,000. All prices are ex-showroom.
Positioned above R15 V4, the new R2 gets an all-new engine, a lightweight chassis and electronics usually associated with larger motorcycles from Yamaha’s R family.
New 204cc Engine – 26.5 PS
Yamaha R2 is powered by a new 204cc, liquid-cooled, four-valve, DOHC single-cylinder engine. It generates 26.5 PS at 10,000 rpm and 19.1 Nm at 8,000 rpm. Yamaha Riding Control offers Street, Sport and Rain presets. Riders can also create a Custom mode by adjusting throttle response, traction control and quickshifter settings.
The engine uses an electronically controlled throttle, finger rocker-arm valve system, 11.5:1 compression ratio and mirror-finished DiASil cylinder. Other highlights include semi-dry-sump lubrication and an assist and slipper clutch. Yamaha has tuned the airbox and exhaust to deliver a sportier intake and exhaust note.
Lightweight Chassis, TFT And Hardware
R2 uses a newly developed high-tensile steel diamond frame and a pivot-mounted aluminium die-cast swingarm. Yamaha claims the chassis is 2.8 kg lighter than the R15’s while maintaining the rigidity required for a supersport motorcycle.
Wet weight is 149 kg, resulting in a claimed power-to-weight ratio of 5.62 kg/PS. The motorcycle has an 810 mm seat height, 1,340 mm wheelbase, 24.5-degree caster angle, 103 mm trail and 20 mm front-fork offset.
Braking duties are handled by a radially mounted four-piston front calliper with a 282 mm floating disc. Equipment includes USD forks, LED lighting and a five-inch colour TFT with turn-by-turn navigation and Yamaha Y-Connect.
R2, R2 QS And R2M Features, Colours
Standard R2 uses black wheels, a mechanical key and conventional suspension settings. It is available in Dark Bluish Gray and Metallic Black. R2 QS adds an up-and-down quickshifter and model-specific colours. Buyers can choose Racing Blue or Matte White Pearl.
Top-spec R2M is offered exclusively in Metallic Gray. It gets blue wheels, a raised 3D emblem, faux-suede seat, silver swingarm, shot-blasted exhaust end cap and engraved fork caps. It also features a smart key, adjustable front preload, adjustable rear preload and five-position adjustable clutch and brake levers.
