Yamaha has expanded its R-Series portfolio with the global debut of the new YZF-R2 in India. This is Yamaha’s first motorcycle in the 200cc segment and has been developed on an all-new platform with a new 204cc engine.
Prices start at Rs 2,30,500 (ex-showroom Delhi), while the Quick Shifter variant costs Rs 2,39,500. Range-topping YZF-R2 M is priced at Rs 2,53,000. Deliveries through Yamaha Blue Square dealerships are scheduled to commence from mid-September 2026.
Yamaha YZF-R2 – Three Variants, Five Colours
Yamaha YZF-R2 is available in three variants. Base YZF-R2 gets Metallic Black and Dark Bluish Gray colour options. It features black alloy wheels and a matte-finished seat.
Moving up the range is YZF-R2 Quick Shifter, available in Matte White Pearl and Racing Blue. As its name suggests, this variant adds Yamaha’s third-generation bi-directional quickshifter, claimed to be a segment-first feature. It also gets body-coloured wheels, variant-specific graphics and upgraded finishes.
YZF-R2 M sits at the top of the range and is offered exclusively in Metallic Gray. Along with the quickshifter, the R2 M gets a 3D embossed emblem, faux suede-finished seat, silver-finished swingarm and a different muffler end cap. More importantly, it gets adjustable front forks, rear suspension, clutch lever and brake lever. Smart Key functionality is also available with the M variant.
New 204cc Engine – 26.5 PS, 19.1 Nm
Powering Yamaha YZF-R2 is an all-new 204cc, liquid-cooled, DOHC, 4-valve single-cylinder engine. It generates 26.5 PS of peak power and 19.1 Nm of torque.
The engine uses finger-follower rocker arms along with Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coating technology derived from Yamaha’s larger performance motorcycles. Yamaha says the setup helps reduce friction and reciprocating mass while improving efficiency and high-rev performance.

One of YZF-R2’s key strengths is its low weight. Kerb weight stands at just 149 kg, while the newly developed high-tensile steel tube diamond frame itself weighs 14 kg. Yamaha says chassis geometry takes inspiration from YZF-R6.
Suspension duties are handled by 37 mm USD front forks and a rear monoshock. The motorcycle rides on 17-inch wheels and gets dual-channel ABS, traction control and an assist and slipper clutch as standard.
R-Series Styling With R9, R1 Inspiration
Design follows Yamaha’s latest R-Series direction. At the front is a compact bi-functional LED headlamp accompanied by twin LED position lamps. The fairing and aerodynamic treatment draw inspiration from Yamaha R9, while the rear LED lighting and some other styling elements take cues from R1.
YZF-R2 also gets a 5-inch full-colour TFT instrument display with connectivity and navigation information. Yamaha Ride Control (YRC) offers three selectable riding modes – Street, Sport and Rain. The combination of riding modes, traction control, USD forks and dual-channel ABS makes the equipment list fairly comprehensive for a 200cc supersport motorcycle.
New Entry Point Into 200cc
YZF-R2 arrives at a time when India’s 200cc performance motorcycle space has become increasingly competitive. Yamaha already has a strong following with R15, while R3 caters to buyers looking for a twin-cylinder motorcycle. R2 now creates another option within the R-Series with substantially more performance than R15 while keeping displacement, weight and pricing below larger multi-cylinder motorcycles.
India is also the first market globally to receive YZF-R2, making its launch particularly significant for Yamaha’s Indian operations. According to the company, more than one million R-Series motorcycles are currently on Indian roads. With prices ranging from Rs 2.30 lakh to Rs 2.53 lakh, Yamaha YZF-R2 will reach Blue Square dealerships across India from mid-September 2026.
