  • Tesla’s Battery Day event will take place on September 22, and there will be a live stream.
  • The company is expected to share details about its current and future battery technologies and give a tour of cell production.
  • We’re expecting news about cheaper batteries and batteries able to to go a million miles over their lifetime.

Tesla has long held the range crown in the automotive world. Even Lucid’s 517-mile range is for a vehicle, the Air sedan, that’s not in production yet. Meanwhile, you can buy a Tesla right now with over 400 miles of range. But competition breeds good things for consumers, and even without a new range champion on the horizon, Tesla isn’t one to sit on its laurels when it comes to battery technology.

With that in mind, the company has announced that its delayed meeting of stockholders and Battery Day event will be happening on September 22 at the Tesla Fremont factory. For those of us that are not Tesla stockholders or who have stock but won’t be able to attend becuse they weren’t randomly selected to do so, there will be a live stream of the event starting at 4:30 p.m. ET.

CEO Elon Musk announced back in June that a tour of cell production will be part of the Battery Day event. Other details about what will transpire are under wraps, based on the news of the past few months, we expect that CEO Elon Musk and other executives will share information about a battery that has a million-mile lifetime, news about range, how Tesla is working on reducing cobalt in its battery packs, and (we hope) how how battery prices have fallen enough that Tesla can offer less expensive vehicles with solid range.

The day will have two parts: first the important but less compelling investor event, immediately followed by the battery event. We’ll bring you details on the 22nd.
