  • We’ve spied the upcoming 2021 Volkswagen Golf R hot hatch before its July unveiling.
  • Compared to the standard 2020 Golf, the R has a different grille and sportier wheels as well as a quad-tip exhaust.
  • Expect to see the new Golf R in late 2020 or early 2021, since the Golf GTI is slated to arrive first.

Volkswagen will show the new Golf GTI hot hatch at the Geneva auto show in March, and it’ll show the even higher-performance Golf R, which has more power and all-wheel drive, in July at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the U.K.

The Golf R doesn’t look that much different from the standard 2020 Golf. It has a different and more angular lower front grille; slightly larger, sportier wheels; and, of course, there’s the quad-tip exhaust.

As for the engine, it’ll be powered by a higher-output version of the turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four. We expect that it’ll produce as much as 330 horsepower in the Golf R since the GTI variant might put out at least 250 horsepower.

The new Golf GTI will come first, with the R following by a few months, and we expect that the Golf R will make its way to our shores in late 2020 or early 2021 as a 2021 model. There are rumors that the GTI will become the base Golf for the U.S., and its cost could come down a bit from the 2019 model’s $28,490 base price, meaning it’s possible the Golf R could also go down from its $41,290 base price.
